I'd like to have a 160GB drive in my next laptop (replacing my 12" powerbook), Apple don't offer this yet and if they do it's likely to cost me an arm and a leg.

Yes, but again this is only a SINGLE change. Why would apple totally redesign the chassis for an item that may get changed maybe 20% of the time. Besides, you need to keep in mind the heat output of a large HD unless the RPMs are only 4800. Even then a 160GB HD may put out too much heat even at 4800. I dont know this for sure, but it is something to keep in mind.

They go 4200, 5400, 7200. Even the 7200 rpm drives are surprisingly heat efficient.

Yeah I agree on the case change. I'm expecting a complete case redesign (come on Apple/Ive show us why you're known for your industrial designs!) for when Santa Rosa comes out.

Thanks :)

Well.. the one thing the jury's out on with respect to Santa Rosa is Robson. That could make a huge difference. Of course, if it does, it can likely be "emulated" with USB flashmem -- it'll just stick out and look bad... ;)

The nand cache (Robson) should make a major difference both to performance and battery life. Vista will be supporting it and I'd be surprised if Apple don't, especially as they must get nand memory at a good price due to the volume they use in the iPod.

Vista already supports caching to flash memory -- they call it ReadyBoost. Stick in a thumb-stick, it checks that it's fast enough, and if so it uses it. AES encrypted to prevent snooping.

I'm not sure if Robson support will differ greatly or how it's implemented -- it could be it's transparent to the OS and thus of use during boot even, or it could just work like ReadyBoost as a device requiring drivers, etc.

Having said that, I rarely reboot anymore...

Regarding price, if it's part of the platform then I think OEMs will get it from Intel along with everything else -- part of the platform. The price will be good, since Intel now supply the parts for a huge percentage of the world's laptops. Right now, realistically, there's Intel, there's AMD, and that's about it, and mobile is Intel's strongest market in terms of share...

If I were a videographer or a person in a security environment I would appreciate a replaceable HD to safeguard or transfer the working environment of large files.

It begs the question if multiple copies of the OS and programs can follow multiple HD's.

I do not forsee Apple offering a SPARE (2nd internal portable) replcaeable drive until truly solid state drive arrives or if they are really Blu-Ray.

This seems like a feature with minimal "mission critical" demand.

I just want portable (popularized) broadband now. It exists (narrow market).

When this hybrid drives come out, will current mobos support them, will they be just regular sata drives, or will we need new notebooks to use them???

The hybrids I've read about sounded like they wouldn't need an additional support -- they just have the flash-based cache sit between the interface and the HD itself, and flush the flash area to disc occasionally.

EDIT: Or perhaps not...

ReadyDrive is a Windows Vista technology that takes advantage of 128MB of more of high speed flash memory embedded directly on the hard drive itself.
ReadyDrive is a Windows Vista only technology. Drives with the ReadyDrive flash cache can work in non-Vista systems, but with few of the advantages of ReadyDrive. ReadyDrive also requires updated ATA command sets in the driver, which won't be back-ported to Windows XP.

That would certainly suggest some level of OS support is required for efficient usage.

As someone else pointed out, merom runs hotter than yonah, despite intel's claims. Heat is the big issue here.

Hence the redesign rumors: mbps run hot as it is, they want to get it right this time around. Plus one other surprise addressing a point of grumbling by would-be PC converts for years...

Are there any merom laptops that are only 1" think made by other vendors? The only one I can think of is the Sony SZ, but that is 1.29"...

actually, it was rather deliberate. i'm hoping that my order will be updated to a merom mbp but i will still get my free ipod because i ordered before the 16th. if it looks like they aren't updated in time, i will either cancel my order or send it back and reorder the merom mbp. just trying to play the system so i can get a free ipod.

Guess you lost, thank god.

No offense, but I am tired of people who try to have their cake and eat it too.

I'm aware of Apple's return policy. I was asking about refusing delivery - i.e. I don't want to wait until it gets shipped to my house, then request an RMA, then pay to have it shipped back. Rather, I want to call the carrier, tell them I refuse delivery, the item gets sent back immediately, and I don't have to pay the return shipping. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Will I encounter any problems getting Apple to refund my money? BTW - there is no restocking fee if an item is unopened.

Even better do a chargeback on it after refusing delivery, and then claim it is an unauthorised charge. Say.. erm.. your kid did the order and it wasn't authorised.

If you refuse delivery, there will be a long delay in your refund. I cancelled an order once about 12 hours after ordering it. They said it was already "in process" but isssued me an RMA at that time, with free return. Once it arrived, I had 14 days to use the RMA.

I assume you mean the stupid-ass ONE BUTTON MOUSE. If they finally figure out how to cut it into 2 pieces, that would be nice. It's truly the biggest problem switchers have, IMHO, and something that annoys the hell out of me.

Anyone know their reasoning for the UNIMOUSE?

MighyMouse is a 2 button, actually 3 button mouse =)

even it has 1 piece cover on top, under the hood, has 2 sections, hence you can have left or right click. :D It has 3rd button on the sides, functions when you squeeze. And the scroll thingy is the most innovative thing on the mouse. scrolls pretty much ANY direction; E, W, N, S, NE, NW, SE, SW...

SOOO

there is no reason left you a switcher =)

Mention of new MBP in 10.4.8?

If anyone has access to 10.4.8, it would be nice if you could check various resource files for a mention of new MBPs... you should be able to find something in the installer package.

Inquirer Correction

They've posted a correction. Which is good, because my credit card is ready to go when they release the C2D MBP's!

CORRECTION 11 Sept 2006. We have learned from a bunch of sources that this is not the case, expect Merom based Macs this year. CD.

No no no I meant the integrated mouse on the portables... I should have specified.

and for some reason I just thought of the goofy circular mouse on the old "colorful" mac desktops a few years back. Those were special!

And yep, I'm a switcher... just waiting for apple to SUAQBALB (for the uninformed, that means to Suck it Up And Quit Being A Little Bitch), and release those soon. Although, the wait will be worth it if the issues are being addressed, so my extreme eagerness to switch is probably just being dragged out by improvements... which is how I'll deal with it, by telling myself it will be much better. The 64 bit architecture is what I'm looking for, so I will wait...

Stuff this - i'm getting a Macbook Pro today!!!

Sick of waiting. Have been for the last 2 months. After reading all the specs of core 2 duo's there is really no difference when it comes to stuff that I will be using it for.

This PowerBook will be officially retired and passed on to my parents as of lunchtime today.

aussie_geek - soon to be using a MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.16 GHz. :p

I think my next purchase will be the first Santa-Rosa mac laptop to come out AFTER Leopard is released.

This Dell Latitude D600 I'm using now could be beaten up a little more :p .

I'm also hoping the software support for 64-bit/intel/multi-cores CPUs as well as virtualization solutions will have well matured by then. Wi-Max is also important for me.

Finally, I'm dreaming of a multi-input touch screen (both on the screen and keyboard panels), but I'll probably be tired of waiting before that comes up...!

You can drop a 2nd finger onto the trackpad to get mouse button 2 or multi-direction scroll. I find it much nicer than having to tuck my button thumb underneath my trackpad finger like a game of twister. 2 finger ops have no left/right handedness bias either, & scrolling around docs with the trackpad is great - after all, trackpads are already the standard way for moving entities around screen, be it the cursor, windows, or panning of images.

A little input on the hard drive discussion from the top of the page.

Today I installed a Seagate 160 GB SATA 5400rpm drive in my new MacBook 2.0. I tranfered over 90GB to it from an External, and about 5GB from high speed internet. Not one did it get more than moderatly hot. Only when I was running iphoto, itunes, firefox, word, and powerpoint did the fans kick to high speed during the transfer. Later i reloaded my ipod with 55GB and again no heat whatso ever, my ipod got hotter.

So I think apple could easily slip in the 160 GB considering its the exact same product line from Seagate as the 60GB I purschased with.

Try running Boinc, does it still stay cool?

It's simpler and more elegent.

If you need a right click just use the 'ctrl' key.

How is that more elegant than clicking the right mouse button of a normal mouse?
