iMessage is a mess in general.

For instance, I delete all photos / videos directly from the conversation threads but when I look in iPhone / Settings > Storage, it still shows a list of photos / videos, which are nowhere to be seen in the messaging app itself. So I go on to delete the long list of photos from the settings app as well (for some reason there is STILL no delete / select all button) and once the whole list is cleared, storage still claims photos (messages) is taking up XY MB like wtf

Also, on my other device, some of my photo attachments simply refuse to delete from a conversation thread. I „delete“ the attachment, return to the same page and the photo it just „deleted“ is still there

I am still having this issue…

All text messages and iMessages appear on my iPhone, iPad and iMac…

However, now I have updated everything to latest OS… this is the current state of messages…

iMessages

Sync perfectly between all devices

Text Messages

The texts come through to all my devices, however, when I delete them from my iPhone they still appear on my iPad and iMac, however, if I delete them from my iMac or iPad they delete from all devices…

I had the issue just after the update and then I just deleted all the non matching conversations from both sides and since then I have no issues.
Do you have sync issues with new conversations started on the iPhone or iPad ?

No all the messages show on all devices it’s just the text messages that don’t delete on iPad and iMac when I delete them on iPhone

I noticed that today it is wild, iMessage via iCloud seems not to work at all anymore, none of my devices are synced : iPhone / iPad / Mac / Apple Watch, all are on the latest releases, stable, not beta.

How about you ?

Yeah same here really bugging me constantly having to delete messages from all devices, this release cycle has completely screwed message syncing, sometimes things sync up sometimes not, sometimes all iMessages are syncing sometimes not, deleted messages delete from all devices but not from the deleted messages list, it’s a bit of a shambles which I hope gets fixed in a later release.

I am going to try factory resetting my iPad and Mac this week and see if a fresh install will fix things, fingers crossed.

I do not think you need to go through the pain of resetting everything as it seems to be a bug and not due to your configuration specifically.

However if you do so I am interested to know if it solved the issue !

Seems to work better now, at least for my iPhone/Mac/iPad.

The only problem I have now is that when I suppress a conversation with the message app on my Apple Watch it does not affect the other devices.

Quick update, I factory reset my iPad and iMac and all is syncing perfectly now… wasn’t too much of a painful process but just a bit time consuming… the only issue is if you receive a message and don’t open the messages app on other devices before you delete it, it still shows the Red 1 on the messages app on those devices… this is likely just a notification bug though which will hopefully get fixed soon, the message is still deleted and synced up though.

OK thanks for the update !

On my side seems to work again fully ok, without having done anything special... Maybe it is on the Apple side, with iCloud servers a bit laggy or suffering from the latest updates ...

Quite possibly, or possible the latest update has fixed the issue possibly…

This is not new to iOS 16 but when deleting messages, they delete from the phone, Mac, & iPad but not from the watch. I can't find a setting anywhere in the watch for messages in the cloud

That is expected behavior for the watch, and the watch does not do 'Messages in iCloud'. New messages will sync to the watch, but not deletions. Also, the watch only keeps the last 30 days of messages. Because of that, I've stopped bothering deleting messages off my watch since it'll eventually do it automatically.

Thanks, I did not know either of those things. I guess it makes sense as the watch has very limited space.

Thanks for the tip ! I will dot he same !
For the message sync actually the watch sync pretty well the iMessages, wether it is new or deleted conversations.
But "not iMessages" are just synced, not deleted.

Reviving an old thread as someone still on iOS 15.7 and about to upgrade iDevices to iOS 16... work computers have to remain on Catalina, and I'm concerned about messages/file/notes/mail syncing. ...I got burned by the Mojave/iOS 14 compatibility issues. So now I'm always reluctant to upgrade.

Syncing deleted messages across all devices is not a huge concern... I'm more concerned with making sure receiving/sending stays in sync. Also concerned about iCloud Drive, contacts, and Notes. But I think I'm seeing that these won't be much of an issue. ...hopefully...

Back again with an update… noticed today that yet again iMessages are syncing perfectly fine, however, text messages are not in regards to the deletion of the message threads… if I delete from my iPhone they still appear on iPad/Mac but if I delete from iPad/Mac it deletes from all devices…

All devices running latest OS.

My messaging sync across devices is almost completely broken on 16.2.
