I don't mind the look of the current messages and would be pretty indifferent if they changed it to the way the messages look in iOS 7

I use messages on both my computers and my phone and while it doesn't work perfect.......messages out of order, disappearing, if computer was in sleep they load funny if at all.......I still find it very convenient for myself and love it.

The only issue I wish they could fix is sometimes people get 2 chat conversations with me, 1 from my phone and 1 from my email. Its not for everyone though, just certain people it does that to. I've tried to fiddle with my settings and make sure the other person has my email and phone # in 1 contact, etc, etc but it still does this from time to time. I wish they'd fix that and I could easily live with the rest.

This! I have group messaging off on my devices, yet twice in the past year or two a message was sent by me and received twice. Additionally, some were sent as group, one of my friends is Victor Garber, and he didn't appreciate others knowing his phone number. It was incredibly embarrassing :(

When compared to iMessage in iOS 7.

I understand that the whole flat concept might not work well on a Mac, but after using the new Messages interface in iOS 7, I can't stand the textured look of Messages on Mac anymore.

Anyone else feel the same way?

You can make Mavericks' Messages app (as well as Mountain Lion and possibly Lion) to look more like iOS 7.

On Messages's menu, select View | Messages | Boxes.

But that doesn't make it look like the iOS 7 Messages app. It makes it flat, but not flat bubbles unfortunately. The boxes look really boring, unlike the beautiful Messages app.

But, it's the most we can do for now. :D

Just follow these instructions:

http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/23/ichat-matte-mod-for-os-x-lion-removes-glossy-text-bubble-ichat/

But don't use the images they provide on the page. Leave the black bubble image alone, and take the white one, and just erase everything and save it as a transparent png.

After you replace the file, use terminal, and restart the app, it you'll see all the gloss is gone.

You can then tweak the bubble colors and font colors of the incoming and outgoing messages to look exactly like iOS 7. It looks perfect!

I really want to do this... but I can't figure out what files I'm supposed to replace... the /Applications/Messages.app/Contents/Resources/imessage-bubble.tiff?
