Agreed, I prefer leather but don't want a heavy leather bag, that would defeat the purpose/benefit of the Air.

I do like Roots messenger bags but I wish they had a little grab handle sewn in so when it's not on your shoulder you have a way to carry it. I wish the Muzetto bags had a handle too.

Timbuk2 messenger bags come with a handle, or it's a $10 option to add it. Only problem I find with Timbuk2 bags is they're true messenger bags and their shoulder straps are a little shorter.

Price isn't a concern, but getting a (smaller) really functional bag is.

I just picked up this leather Tumi bag at the Tumi store in Rockefeller Center, NYC. I was using just a sleeve and needed a bag. So far I really like it, it fits the Air (I have 11.6" but should be fine with 13 also), notebook, iPad, chargers, earbuds, etc and even fits into the center compartment of my RedOxx Air Boss for one bag travel.

Good luck with your search.

I got this one... Good deal for a super nice bag. They have more just check their store.

The small school messenger bag I noted above has just such a handle and is, I think, the smallest of the bags I pointed out.

MBA bags

I bought this one:

...which was fine for a low-cost minimalist bag that is still useful (handle and shoulder strap, room for a few things in addition to the laptop), but when I need to carry a bit more, I have become totally sold on the Lapdog laptop case -- an unusual design, but it's small, fits my MBA well, has pockets for everything I need, and does a nice job as a portable desk any place I can find a chair to sit in when I'm on the road:

http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/hardware/laptop/lapdog/index.htm

(old review, but has good pics, etc) I got an incredible deal on Yugster.com a while back, so I would imagine you could find a good deal somewhere.

It's not a typical bag, and after trying a lot of bags, this is the one I ended up with and keep using.

[EDIT: not 100% sure this is the same model, but if it is, this is a TOTAL steal: http://www.amazon.com/Shaun-Jackson-Design-Lapdog-Laptop/dp/B002XJ8NZU ]

I went from my Israeli paratrooper's bag to the Patagonia Half Mass bag in a funky orange- very cool

The buckles on the Raiders Satchel are pretty cool... They look like normal buckles but they actually have strong magnets under the buckle which attach to the bag. So the buckles are actually just for show; the magnets keep the straps locked down on the body of the bag.
Rats! They almost had a sale, but I really hate fake stuff. Buckles should be for function, not show. Anything else is just wrong.

I really like the STM messenger bags. I used to have the large 15" one for my 15" MacBook Pro for work and it worked great. It even has foam padding around the sleeve for the laptop so you don't even need to buy a sleeve.

They also make a 13" Alley Small bag which I bought in brown/orange for my 2007 13" MacBook and I'm now using it for my MacBook Air. It's small and compact, but fits the Air perfectly along with the charger, a mouse, etc.

Walmart has it for ~39.99 and it can be found at other places online for about the same.

I've ordered the Manhattan Portage Europa in medium size... The 13.5x9.5x3-7 expandable size should provide for versatile use, and it is only 16oz... No padded compartment, but it has a separate compartment that would be ideal for the MBA with a sleeve... will review once I get it (couple days)...

The ideal bag for me is horizontal rather than vertical - easier to get in and out of and to find items.

Room for the MBA and iPad plus peripherals is ideal.

A lot of bags are too small/sleeve like in size or too big, very hard to find something in between, lightweight with just enough room for carrying daily essentials.

Anyone have any good backpack style recommendations?

My ideal bag would have the following features:
Fits 13 inch Macbook Air and iPad (preferably in separate, padded sections as generally don't use an iPad case). I develop for the iPad using the MBA so fitting both is a requirement.
Is reasonably comfortable, light, yet still has some padding as I would like to be wearing this backpack while biking to work.
A third storage compartment to contain a lunch.
If the bag could actually fulfill all these requirements well I'd be willing to spend a decent chunk of change (it'd still be cheaper than gas :p).

I cannot believe how many god damn bags I have already looked at for my iPad and MBA. But, I decided to get muzetto bag. This is one of the best bag available in the market.

It's little pricey, but So is my MBA.

Getting red color!

Sounds like you already have one.
Let me ask few questions please...

1. Do you have Sleeves on your laptops as well? In other words, do I have to invest Macbook air Sleeve and Muzetto bag? Will it protect it fine without sleeves?

2. What color do you have? I am really open to any colors except white and that one looks awful to me with brown color.
