If Facebook are doing things the open way then I assume I'll soon be able to follow links to publicly shared content on their platforms and view them without being logged in?

I have zero meta apps on my Apple devices, only thing I have is an instagram account that I access via safari. I still think it’s time to resurrect Ping, probably with a different name as I would be very interested in a social network by Apple whose sole purpose would be to not sell your data but sell you hardware and icloud stuff.

I think it's rich for Mark Zuckerberg to say his metaverse will be open, as nothing Facebook / Meta does is open. They skim a much data as possible to sell to as many brokers as possible. The Meta Metaverse is simply going to be a way for them to gather more data to sell than Facebook.

I have no interest in this VR/AR stuff either, but I'd want to believe Apple's approach will be more humane and instead acts as a compliment/optional experience to life rather than Meta's goal of wanting to keep users plugged in forever and working within the digital world to earn digital money to buy stupid digital cr*p.

I give Facebook/Meta about 10 to 15 years left in existence. The clock is ticking. Facebook is not a thing with young people at all and now Instagram is losing to TikTok.

It’s not overstaying it to say that social
media, and FB especially, have irreversibly changed the world for the worse.

I DISAGREE! Social media has made us all better human beings!!!

On the Thanksgiving dinner table, I text my Sister-in-law: "Hey! Pass the buttah!"

Sister-in-law texts me right back: "LOL gtfo. get it urself loser."

A real product Meta can’t seem to get off the ground vs. A rumored Apple product that has never even been announced. I’ll bet on Apple. Even if Apple does release a AR/VR headset and it flops, they will take the hit and move on with very little impact to their bottom line. If Meta fails to make this pivot it will only accelerate their downward spiral. I also don’t see a compelling product / service that allows Meta to leverage their existing business model in a way that won‘t be a hellscape for users.

At the end of the day having an Apple headset on the market may allow another company to build a better ’metaverse’ than Meta without having to invest in developing any hardware.

I just can't see Zuckerberg's idea of Metaverse as anything more than a 3d/VR version of Second Life designed to maximize revenue from users.

His hype sounds a lot like the hype around 3D TV a few years ago. It was the next big thing, it was inevitable. It flopped.

Who gives Meta the right to own the platform of the virtual world, and basically run as the global government? Did they apply for a license to operate?

That is exactly what it is. He wants it to be a platform he controls so he can take 30% off the top of every transaction just like Apple does on the App Stores. The problem is, no one has any good/productive ideas for what a Metaverse platform could be put to good use for. VR/AR and gaming already have multiple successful platforms and are not enough to sustain a totally new and separate platform.

You came out flailing with dumb stereotypes about the "Apple cult." What did you expect as a response?

I'm typing this on a Windows computer right now, and I'm about two feet from my Oculus Rift headset -- which I haven't used in years. But you go ahead and project whatever you need to project.
Nothing needed to be protected. The "Apple cult" has been a reference around for a very long time in the Apple community and refers to those people who praise Apple for everything and buy everything no matter what. Again the easy and prime example is the Apple micro fibre cloth, or even the watch bands that sell for more then watches themselves. Then the blanket all Windows laptops are trash comment and the refusal to think anyone but Apple can do anything good. Your Rift headset is a long way off from what is being done with current VR headsets and the Quest 2 itself. I have the original Rift and the Quest 2 and the Quest 2 is what I wanted the Rift to be when it came out.

The deepest philosophical situation around Mr. Zuckerberg, is that he belongs more and more in a kind of James Bond plot. One 'guru' that wants to rule and conduct the world with one social and very influential product, it's nothing less than frightening. What's next, he's aiming for presidency?

The thing is, I don’t see a point to being in Meta’s metaverse. I’m far from convinced it will be a boon to productivity or entertainment. Game designers have been working for a long time on the motivation to spend time in a virtual environment, and unless there is a way to make the metaverse function as a meta-game, a hub for other games, there isn’t going to be much of a draw to the metaverse.

I reckon Zuckerberg is right in saying there is a ‘deep philosophical conversation’ going on between Apple and Meta. Meta wants to follow Google’s path for an open metaverse, with commoditised hardware and interoperable software. Apple’s vision is… I guess we will have to see, but from what we’ve heard it’s not deep VR. Ultimately I really think Microsoft is the elephant in the room, they are in a much better position to do a compelling metaverse that functions as a real virtual world than Meta, and have much better gaming resources.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

If by free speech you mean hate speech that often promotes violence towards people of all types, then take that W and tattoo it on your forehead, dude. Tell us who you really are.

We have never had limitless free speech in this country. Especially in privately owned areas. There is a reason why you can remove protestors from your building. There is a reason why you can't scream fire in a crowded movie theater. As a society we have decided that it's a high priority to keep everyone safe and secure. We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and people like you are trampling all over people's pursuit of happiness. Got it? Not allowed, not now, not ever. Not as long as we have liberty and justice for all. And we won't let you tear that down. Not again.
It appears you are directing your reply to me. I am not sure what I said in my message or seemingly implied to set your tangent off… maybe you can elaborate and then it can be addressed?

I hate Facebook/Meta and how they keep on babbling about this vr game riddled with microtransactions and NFTs they call the "metaverse"
Facebook is getting too much into political correctness and community standards than being an open community, they are all about censorship and if a post is too much against what the current government administration is doing it is removed for violation of community standards. Guess they didn’t learn from a class action lawsuit the first time…..

Do you think if Apple had a similar platform they would not be into political correctness as well? Pretty sure it would intolerant towards those they deem as not tolerable by holding differing view points.

That being said, I have heard all sorts of horrid things in public areas in various games/social apps. They are certainly not monitoring or censoring that at all

And this is why Apple has a cult like following. Apple does plenty of stupid things, they just have people who worship them in such mass numbers it makes failing difficult, and it is not because of how good they are, hence the Apple cult.

Facebook has actual products on the market, production models of future releases, and a team that have been growing the VR business. They have been outselling Xbox and Playstation the last couple of years and offer a great VR experience for a really affordable price. They have even listened to the consumer by removing the Facebook requirement to ouse the product. I am not Facebook fan, I don't use the service or any other social media service. I do have a Quest 2 and am an actual user of the product so I have first hand knowledge of the device and generally what is going on as I follow casually the VR arc as it grows.

In order for Apple to "run away" in this market they will need to do something so far beyond what anyone else is doing, not just Facebook. Apple VR/AR will be expensive, if you think they will have a sub $500 VR option I think it is safe to say that will not happen, especially considering the cost of their micro fibre clothes that they would need to include to keep the lenses clean. Better quality lenses and resolution simply will not cut it and I don't believe a closed off app store from Apple would be enough to bring about something that would sway the almost 15 million Quest 2 users, or get a whole segment of people who have never invested in VR to go and buy an Apple device. I could be wrong of course, but I can't see it.
Apple will most likely do what they always do. Release a great product with potential, everyone clamours to develop for it, and then in a few years that product becomes awesome.
Right now we have no idea how to create any content for this upcoming headset as Apple have provided no information. So yep, at launch I am predicting it will be average, with most people asking what its for, then give it a year or 2 with development to be the thing Apple always knew it would be.

I also think everyone is losing sight of what is happening. It is about Web3. Zuckerberg keeps going on about meta verse, whatever that is, but really it is simply extending the current 2dimensional web into the 3 dimensions [blockchain is another element that is separate again]. So, as now, we can all ignore Facebook and still enjoy the benefits of web3. Zuckerberg doesnt own the internet, and neither does Apple.

Before Zuckerberg came along I was a perfectly content man, enjoying my life and not experiencing any kind of FOMO. Nothing has been the same since 2007 for me.
I finally deleted facebook in February and I've barely missed it. Sometimes I'm like "why did I take these photos when I have nowhere to post them?" but that's it. I've thought about getting Instagram but I feel like that's just the same thing.
