Movies. Watching movies has emerged as probably every journalist's favorite use case for the AVP so far. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on how well it handles any other use case.

Which led me to do a lot of research on the Meta Quest 3 during this preorder frenzy. A solid $500 standalone headset with good display quality, but there seems to be no easy way to buy or rent movies, all you get are some streaming apps that are a mixed bag in terms of video quality. And speaking of 3d, which is a big use case for a VR headset, the only way to get a 3D movie onto the Quest appears to be illegal downloading or ripping 3D blu-rays via a PC and using various workarounds to get them onto the device. Seriously???

If the Meta Quest 3 had solid content options, the AVP launch would have been one giant advertisement for it, I would have bought one this weekend just for movies and TV especially on long flights.

I'm not sure if 3D movies are really that big of a deal TBH. It's essentially the same experience you get watching a 3D movie at a theater, and the general public barely cares about 3D movies in the theater. If they did, all movies would be shot in 3D, but they're not. It just doesn't really add that much to the experience...

True, but I should clarify what I had in mind. I meant all sorts of movies and TV shows in 2D and 3D, whether via streaming apps or platforms that allow you to rent and purchase content. I'm aware that AVP has gotten the snub from some major streaming providers forcing users to stream in Safari, but they are also coming out of the gates really strong with the iTunes movie and TV show library.

Meanwhile on the quest, we have a pretty broken and incomplete content ecosystem for movies and TV.

Nobody who views a movie (3D or otherwise) on the AVP will ever want to go back to watching movies on the Quest 3 again.

Expect to hear a lot more on this once people get the AVP's in their hands. Or rather, on their heads.

I'm sympathetic to this view, I own an LG OLED TV and care about displays a lot, but if the AVP turns out to be best suited for content consumption, I'd be sorely tempted to get a device that's 1/7th the price just for watching stuff on long-haul flights or when I'm not near my TV.

The Quest 3 is pretty broken in terms of OS software anyway. Even the app launcher is a joke. No way to hide or preferably delete demos, it always defaults to a default view on boot, no folders etc. It’s a mess. I really enjoy my Quest 3 but jeez.

As a quest 2 owner…. movies are “OK” on it. I haven’t used AVP yet, but as i understand it the resolution is MUCH better (Not quest3 better or quest 2 better - but several steps up).

movies are OK on the quest 2 but FOV and resolution really isn’t amazing. it’s like watching through a scuba mask.

And yes, Meta’s software for the quest is a dumpster fire. It’s terrible. The store is slow, the device always needs an hour of updates or more every time i get it out of the closet, etc.

I've seen a couple people say watching 3D content on the Vision Pro is unlike any 3D experience they've had before, whether it's on 3D TVs, at the theater, etc. Sometimes the technology has to catch up to the idea; that might happen with Vision Pro and 3D movies. We'll need to see a lot more people with these headsets first (not just from Apple, but with a similar level of polish), but I think we'll end up seeing more native 3D content even if it's 10+ years from now.

Also 3D movies as they exist today might not be the thing that pushes 3D content forward (a lot of existing 3D titles are shot in 2D and converted in post). Instead I think Apple's Immersive Video format (180 degree 3D captures that fill your peripheral vision) will become the new standard for 3D content. So yeah, maybe traditional movies with 3D don't take off but instead a new media format (artistically as well as technologically) does instead.

Can't wait for the early YT reviewers to let us know what they think !

Anyone know when does the embargo lift for the AVP ?

Very much agreed. I’m a 3D lover, so I’m very excited to see the future. Isn’t the Godzilla show specifically made for 3D on the Vision Pro? I imagine it will be a showcase.

Here we go with 3D for the third go. You never know maybe it'll stick this time

Just an fyi but even 2D movies (streaming generally) is a hassle/scarce on Quest.

You either have to use the Netflix app which is capped at 1080 (?) and hasn't been updated in eons, or a third party app like Bigscreen. Bigscreen has Prime, Disney+, and Twitch plus some limited amount of 3D movies.

Alternatively, you hop on to VRchat for a world that has streaming (illegally obviously). You could also use the browser, but some sites like Netflix don't work on the Quest browser. So now you have to download a third party browser to get it to work if at all or resort to illegal streaming sites.

The above is pretty much streaming on Quest in nutshell ^

By comparison, the Vision Pro will get a handful of native apps at launch (including buying and renting from the iTunes/Apple TV Store), with browser support for Netflix right off the bat.

So in terms of entertainment options for movies and shows, the Vision Pro is light years ahead of a platform that existed for a decade (at least when Facebook acquired them).

I'm genuinely and utterly confused at Meta's strategy.

Concur with all of that.

its neat in theory, when it works, and the 3d effect is excellent.

But I wouldn't want to watch a feature length movie on the quest hardware (I have a quest 2 with the elite strap upgrade).

You just know apple are filming a heap of immersive content with their media arm right now.

Also why they're snapping up sports licensing deals, etc.

I’ve watched Netlix on the quest 2 and it’s just plain bad. Resolution seemed to be capped to 1080p for some reason and the Quest 2 doesn’t have the highest resolution display also. I had trouble reading subtitles which was kind of annoying.

The Godzilla show is supposed to come out in full VR 180 degrees, so even better than 3D.
That type of experience is going to be jaw dropping. I know Apple loves to hype their products, and they’re incredible at it, but I don’t think any amount of hype can prepare people for some of the experiences they’re going to have on the Vision Pro.

I hope so.

And I'd be disappointed if they don't release 3D films or shows soon after release.

It'd even be a pleasant surprise if some of the shows already filmed support 3D already (the sci fi shows would be cool). But I would assume they haven't done that to avoid leaks?

Yeah it definitely depends on the individual. I could never watch a full length movie on a Quest 2.

But I recently got a Quest 3 and it's noticeably more comfortable. And the improved image quality and lens makes for a really nice viewing experience.

The apps and software experience is a total let down though.

Same here!

I plan on using the VP for immersive 3D travel destination content.

At my age, I don't see myself climbing Everest, hiking Machu Picchu, travel to Antarctica, or skydiving, etc...

Let me know how the 360 VR content looks on AVP haha because I have been watching 12K VR Videos on my quest 3 and even in 12K, VR still seems to be a somewhat blurry mess and I doubt this will change on AVP if the source material simply isnt there. 20 years ago, I probably would have been impressed but nowadays I am used to crispy clear content on my tv and it just isnt it in VR
