While probably not true of instagram, loads of businesses use WhatsApp and Facebook to interact with customers, so if you want to do business with them you probably do need to use FB.
this is mostly nonsense, show me a business that you can't use if you don't have facebook or whatsapp.
businesses offer those are an additional methods of contact, no the only method of contact.

Do you think all that’s necessary on a daily basis? Seems like a lot of work.
Yep.
Bit of learning (ALWAYS a good thing)
Bit of setting up (part of the learning)
And then maintainence now and again.

But I like learning.

And I HATE adverts, trackers, etc
And I educate others when I am able.

Facebook, sure, that's completely optional. I was an avid Facebook user until a few years ago when Facebook becomes literally useless as every other posts in my feed are ads/sponsored "content." I cannot even see my friends and family's updates anymore due to the ads infiltration into the feed

But Whatsapp is a different story. In my country, even the government uses Whatsapp for public services. Want to schedule appointment with your doctor? Via WhatsApp. If you don't have Whatsapp, you are practically isolated from the modern society in general. We are at the point that even eCommerce are using Whatsapp for OTPs.

I honestly hate the in-app browsers, and always switch out of them. If this is a real I’ll take part. Last time I got like $100 bucks from Meta. HAHA

That’s likely what safari view controller was designed to address, and it’s clear why apps like Facebook won’t adopt them.

yes Whatsapp in Europe (where i am) is the defacto messaging system, but it's still optional, you're not forced to use it anywhere, they simply provide it as an option.

not sure what country you're in, but i find it impossible to believe that your doctors won't accept appointments from anywhere other than Whatsapp.

i stopped using Whatsapp about 2 years ago (still have it installed but haven't opened the app since then), and i've haven't come across anything where i've been forced to use Whatsapp, or had lesser service due to not using it.

With WA you are still an avid Facebook user (simply because FB and WA are owned by the same company), it’s just not as obvious to you. And by the way, ads/sponsored contact may not be on WA yet but I can assure you it will be sooner or later.

I was an avid WA user until the day FB announced it took over WA.

And that is why I have zero social media apps on any of my devices.
If you can not use it with Apple Safari, I will NOT use the service.

Social media can NOT be trusted, EVER.
The correct way to emphasize a word is to use italics, not caps. Not trying to be a jerk here, just thought I'd let you know in case you were interested.

But yes, social media is definitely a cancer on society. For anyone who remembers the pre and post-internet world, it's fairly obvious how much damage it's caused.

Apple’s major privacy update to iOS last year made it much more difficult for apps to track user behavior beyond their own borders, but a new lawsuit alleges that Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta kept snooping through a workaround. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and embedded below, alleges that Meta evaded Apple’s new restrictions by monitoring users through Facebook’s in-app browser, which opens links within the app. The proposed class-action lawsuit, first reported by Bloomberg, could allow anyone affected to sign on, which in Facebook’s case might mean hundreds of millions of U.S. users.
Sounds more like a company of hackers then respecting privacy boundaries IMHO. Yes this will be an interesting trial to follow as it shows continued snooping even after social media industry is being scrutinized more.

This is why multiple apps, specifically google will not allow you to login to your accounts through facebooks in app browser. They know it’s probably far worse then what’s even being reported.

So I ask, since Facebook browser is built upon webkit and the pixel is integrated into the link itself. If you can’t log in to an account or it’s unable to display a web page correctly and you then click to open that same link within browser your default browser, typically WebKit based Safari.

Will that pixel continue to preform the same data mining operations. Would this also be a possible outcome if you were accessing FB directly through your default browser to begin with and clicked a link.

Would your being logged in through the app or a browser determine the inclusion of the pixel on each and every link or would it be standard attachment to all links all the time and if it was, would it then differentiate which devs WebKit build it was deployed on and instructed as to whether it should Deploy its full set of capabilities or maybe toggle them off and on based off what it would determine is new or previously undocumented information?

Oh Boy the questions this is going to bring great but not nearly as entertaining as watching him resorting to pleading the 5th nonstop for 8 hours. It’s really gonna zuck to be that guy.

The real lawsuit would be against Apple for not removing their apps from the App Store for policy violations.

I’m having flashbacks… as if maybe Apple would kick them out of the store for not following the signed contracts rules and ask them to fix it before being allowed back. But then Meta won’t and show some 1984-esque videos instead in a couple of days, then a bunch of people will line up either against or for Apple (for asking to honor their own rule book), then a multibillion trial ensues with some Yvonne-something named judge!

In all seriousness, I think they don’t have to squash Meta completely, it just need to be kept in line… the problem is that if that platform blows up then that crowd will be moving elsewhere, both users and developers included.
The analogy in geographical terms is, to play both devil’s advocates here, that is it is good that neither California nor Texas blow up, it’s good to have a choice of the type of place you want to be in and be able to avoid the drawbacks of the other as a matter of choice.

Thank god
Riiight!!?!
Ouch, this one will likely hurt.
Honestly I hope Apple and this class action suit rips them a new one, turn it into a volcano!

Great news! Let the battle of a thousand overpriced lawyers begin!
Mos def! will it be featured on Suits? ;)
Pfff, who uses in-app browsers
Grrrrr! When will people STOP using FB/Meta?!

If anyone is like me that does use IG ~ usually those before Meta bought them ~ open up links in native or other browser outside the app. All meta gets is you opened the link - still bad but terrible.

What’s probably strange is reading Meta’s defence public statement as potentially true. Hear me out. Recall Microsoft having similar issues with IE? Well what if metas apps do respect users privacy in such that it just accepts current browser privacy policy’s that most users have no idea what they are nor have been set to! That scares me to always open in an external browser.

Thankfully I’m not too hooked.

Went today and ordered some food to take out, one of the options was macaroni salad. Five minutes later, I had macaroni salad on my feed. I never had before macaroni salad on my Facebook feed but I got other items I mentioned over voice. Whoever says Facebook are not listening actively on our iPhones, are dreaming.
