Facebook parent company Meta is planning to release a standalone AI app that would compete with products like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's Copilot, reports CNBC.

The upcoming AI app will join Meta's other apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Recent news has also suggested that Meta could soon release a Reels app, breaking out the Instagram feature into its own product.

Meta plans to release a Meta AI app in the second quarter of 2025, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg aiming to become the leader in AI by the end of the year.

Meta's AI product is already built into apps like Facebook and Instagram as part of the search feature, but it has some of the same generative capabilities as other AI products. Meta believes that a standalone app could allow users to more deeply interact with its AI assistant.

While Meta AI will be free as it is now, Meta will test a paid subscription service that could have more advanced capabilities.

All Zuckerberg does is buy or copy other successful products. Meta is the most creatively bankrupt of all tech companies. They’ve truly brought nothing of lasting value into the world and are more like a giant parasite that sucks up attention and ad dollars.

Have you seen what Apple has done with PCC and how it interacts with third party AIs? It's think they're building a good foundation.

I hope we can back end Apple Intelligence with Grok eventually.
In my experience, I tried Apple Intelligence on my M1 iPad Air, and it works pretty fine and gets the job done with writing tools, not bad…

Yeah I agree. Interestingly in seeing no real CPU or memory impact at all on my MacBook so far.

It seems like Apple is being very careful rolling out features so far.

I just feel that everything they touch kinda stagnates, and I don't care for Zuckerberg. I mean, I guess, they're sort of doing a little better now. Like, the ability to have a second profile under one account makes sense, but I wish we had gotten that functionality a decade ago.

Whatsapp still requires a phone number which bugs me. I'd like to see them do email+password login and usernames etc. Also, I'd like to see the edit button made available forever, like slack, teams, google chat, discord, etc...we should control our digital footprint. People who claim that "15 minutes is good" - what do they think about slack, teams, google chat, and discord allowing unlimited editing. I don't think WhatsApp should be going for a "everything we type is set in stone type of platform". I think it should be a bit more casual and allow forever edits - not saying that's what people *should* do - but the fact that it's allowed makes me, and many others more comfortable with other chat platforms, and the issue is that meta kind of has a bit of a monopolistic hold on things and so sometimes I want to type things that are blunt like "no thanks" because, sometimes it feels like giving them ideas kind of "feeds the beast" but here I am, typing out some ideas.

Another thing WhatsApp could use is 2 primary devices. It's good we can link a few devices to our 1 primary device, and I can understand some security benefits of not just allowing *unlimited* primary devices. However, I think *2* primary devices could be a good happy medium that still balances functionality with security. This way, we could login to *1* extra device *without* having to *link it* to the *1* primary device. This would give us 2 primary devices, with 4 linked means 8 devices total, I think is good. Still not unlimited for better security, but one extra primary device would enhance functionality/accessibility.

But WhatsApp needs an ability to signup with email and password and allow 2 primary devices and hide our phone numbers when joining public groups. There's so much spam out there today, we should be able to converse with people online without sharing our phone number.

And ok, maybe a standalone app by meta is kind of interesting and one other commenter pointed out they hope they keep updating local llama or something to that effect which I agree with. But they just feel like such a human-hostile company. And I feel like partially it's because of Zuckerberg, and partially because of their monopolistic tendencies and their acquisition of WhatsApp, Instagram etc.

However, I am more interested in seeing Grok succeed here. I'd rather see Grok be the next big AI. meta can continue doing what they're doing but, I think chatgpt has been good at being sort of a poster-AI, and it'd be nice to see a different side come at it. Meta feels like the same side of the status quo, I think.

Another thing meta could do is maybe get rid of Zuckerberg. I guess maybe that won't happen but, to me he seems so unlikeable, I don't see how he's still there.

What do you think about all that
