How many social media platforms can the marketplace support? Sure, there will always be room for a niche play or two that caters to wants/needs such as privacy or political persuasion or fetish. But for most people, IG and FB are enough.

If Musk and Trump hadn't kept Twitter in the mainstream spotlight purely through their antics, it would have been relegated to the also-rans of social media history long ago, like MySpace.

I don't hate it for a 1.0 release, but there's definitely room for improvements.

The zoom-in is horrible, just like on IG, it's too "short" and you have to keep your finger on the screen.

You can't share media while on full screen, only on the post view with a tap and hold.

Sharing an image to WhatsApp gives a link instead of the actual image, you can only save it.

You know what would be awesome? If Brave, or one of the other privacy based browsers would make a good solution for social networking.
There is a core reason why “privacy” focused companies don’t create “social networking” platforms. Mainly because folks interested in dumping volumes of information about themselves online aren’t TOO very focused with privacy in the first place. It wouldn’t be private enough for the folks that value privacy nor social enough for the folks that value social networking.

at this point, if you are into the whole social media thing and don't choose an offering that uses an open no-lockin protocol like Mastodon (or Bluesky, reportedly) i don't know what to tell you
what happened to twitter and reddit will keep happening, over and over

I only post car-related stuff on Twitter, but like it for breaking news and such. If the same/similar content creators, journalists etc jump on board and this can filter out much of the political BS, it'll be a hit

(something similar to TweetDeck down the road would be the cherry on top)

You should see the total mental meltdown that 9to5Mac is having. They actually believe that Twitter is now over, because of Thread. They are deranged. And that's being kind, frankly.

Given the way Elon's driving it into the ground (with artificial limits and the like for free/unverified users) - Twitter basically deserves to burn at this point

MacRumors, the TrekBBS and crownvic.net are the only message boards I frequent. My Facebook account is limited to actually known friends and two groups of interest. Thats my extent of social media. It’s pretty damn small. I don’t feel compelled to share every thought, meal and fart with strangers. I also have zero interest in following “celebrities” to hang on, or complain about, whatever little musing they put out in public. Whatever celebrities I take note of I watch them in their shows or films, listen to their music or read about them in the news.

I’m far more interested in what I have going on in my own life then following famous nobodies that have no real meaning to me.

Can’t seem to find a search option for hashtags… that’s a huge thing to have and a definite need.

Also, I never understood why IG shadow bans for using a hash too much. I mean if you’re into animation and make animation videos of course you’re going to use the “animation” hashtag. Why mix it up and use the “purses” hash?
I hope Threads doesn’t follow IG on this part.
