They’re probably doing what I did. Got the 6s last year (for a pittance) and retained my headphone jack. I put my money where my mouth was.

Apple still sells new phones without a notch. For cheaper. If you don’t need bleeding edge you get one of those.

It was new last year and most here expected the XS to be the exact same iPhone with a slightly better processor and camera so people are used to it. It still looks like a design compromise to me but as I’ve always said it wouldn’t put me off buying the phone.

The notch is lame. I never accepted it. It may be ubiquitous right now like McDonalds and 7-Elevens, but ubiquity forced upon the innocents doesn't make it good. It sucks (IMO). In fact I was a bit shocked how crappy it really did look at the XS event when Phil quickly showed a bunch of horizontal screen shots of stuff on the Max. It looked horrible (IMO) and I was embarrassed for them. Maybe that's why he hauled ass through those slides.
I'll forever be a notch despiser. It looks like hell. Nobody would accept this crappy design on a TV.

Chances of that are the same as the opposite, or maybe by then Android would have been a better updating system that doesn't keep it fragmented over different versions. Also I'd probably be hospitalized for laughing uncontrollably if Apple release an actual full screen no notch phone, reminding myself of all the people that embraced the lame cutout because they were told to.

I think there’s a difference between embracing and accepting. I don’t particularly like it, but I understand and accept it. But I won’t waste my time whining and complaining all over the internet about it.

It’s certainly better than the alternative: gigantic top and bottom bezels of the iPhone 8. Even narrow bezels look silly, like the elongated Note 9.

No it doesn’t. Even with the notch, the X has more screen than the 8 on the top and the bottom. Side-by-side, 8 is just a rectangular cutout of the X display. Even if you want the display to end where the notch is, functionally it generally does. Then you get an extra couple of visible screen areas on top, to display the time and battery icons, etc.

Now, I’m not a huge advocate for the notch. I don’t actively like it, and I understand it is a design compromise, but you have to at least be realistic about it. You are getting more screen than the old rectangles. Period. And better screen at that.

Look, you can't have it both ways. If you want to say the notch adds screen space, it comes at the cost of overlaying full screen content. If you want to exclude the notch, it's not adding more screen space.

The area would be great for an expanded status area that was off-limits to apps, preserved a rectangle, and didn't interfere with full screen content in the allowed client area, but that's not what they did.

If you went to a movie theater that advertised a bigger screen but had a notch that affected content, would you be pleased?

Except it literally is both ways. You do realize it’s only like that if you specifically zoom it in, right? Otherwise you can still watch videos at the same rectangular size as the iPhone 8 version. Actually, when it’s a wider aspect ratio than 16x9, and not zoomed, it’s still bigger than the 8, because it doesn’t have the gigantic bezel restrictions. And you’ll still get all of the extra space within other apps. Meanwhile, a non-zoomed 16x9 will look exactly the same on both. Scratch that, it will look way better on the X/XS due to OLED and HDR.

I don’t even like the notch, but I still just don’t get how people don’t understand this. You’re clinging to the past for reasons of pure pettiness.

Finding it curious how this time last year, this place was utterly bombarded with threads complaining about the notch when one iPhone had it.

Now, a year later, we have three iPhones with a notch & we hardly see anyone complaining. In fact, it's more the opposite - many more people are now praising the design/form factor.

I wonder what's caused this turnaround in people's mindset?

Can those who vehemently opposed the notch last year & accept it now provide reasoning as to why things have changed?

I think a lot just realized that it's kind of silly to hate on something that has to be there, at least until they figure out how to get the camera and other hardware out of that spot. It's just a bezel that doesn't go all the way to the edges, once you realize that highly obvious fact things get much easier. The times when the notch is apparent are so few and far between anyhow.

Notch is still ugly but you barely notice it unless you are watching full screen video, what I don't like is having video on letterbox and when I expand it I get a notch cutting my content.

It does add screen space when you are using the phone with the status bar. The area the status bar would be using is now "free" and that's a net plus. In full screen apps it's still more screen space, but I understand that the notch is a bit intrusive in some apps like games. For video I don't get the uproar, watching native resolution the notch is going to be letterboxed anyway so it's a non issue.

Eventually they will, but the tech needs to be reality first. Obviously the notch is a stop gap.

If you’re focusing on the Notch, you’re focusing on the wrong aspects with the iPhone X and above. The ‘Notch hate’ has subsided a lot. Apple Has made a lot of controversial decisions over the years with their hardware across their product lineup, but is just like anything else, and It will eventually fade away as nothing more than a frivolous argument on a tech forum.

I purchased an XS Max on Launch Day and I honestly don't notice it. It did bother me on the X though...

What feels different this year is that the notch is similar to a co-worker that you do not like, but you tolerate them because there is nothing you can do about it other than wait that someday they(notch) will leave.

I do predict that once the notch is finally gone, there will be a thread or two expressing nostalgia for the notch, that it gave the iPhone character, distinguished it from other phones, and that it was, umm, the most beautiful feature of the iPhone?
