I am fed with the incorrect use of the word Titular. In what way does Benjamin Franklin hold a purely formal role without any real authority????????
I guess you can't be bothered to learn more than one meaning of a word? The usage here is literally the second definition. Maybe get an education from somewhere other than a tooltip.

I mean, I don't really think he had any real authority in the formal sense. A lot of people erroneously think that he was a president, so that's probably what it's giving a nod to.

I'd watch it. This made me think of my high school American History teacher many years ago (Hey Mrs. Jackson!), who said that Franklin should be called "the father of our country", citing a legend that Franklin may have fathered as many as 70 (!) children out of wedlock.

You’ve got to be joking re severance. Just because some of the shots are the over-used aerial top down overhead view of a room or general scene, does not make fantastic cinematography. I would say lazy if anything. It’s dull and confusing.

Wait - Did a cinematographer kick your dog?

I was considering more than just one camera angle when I made mention of the cinematography. Aspects like color palette (which I find gorgeous), lighting (an under appreciated element), textures, etc. that all work in tandem - when done right (as I maintain they are here) - to yield a lush, rich aesthetic.

Anyway, that’s what’s fun: people have varying tastes, perspectives and expectations. Enjoy yours! And best to your dog. ?

Lol. I was a bit full on with my critique ha. I wanted to like severance but am annoyed that I just don’t think it pays dividends unfortunately

The first sentence of your last paragraph is fundamental to the arts in general. Everything from music to wine should be seen through that lens. It allows for interpretation and expression to flourish, supporting future generations of artists.

Well said.

Haha. All good man.
Full disclosure: I am only 1 episode in. Who knows - I may feel differently with a bit more of the series under my belt.
Cheers!

Thanks for highlighting, and then expanding upon, that truth. Cheers!

It’s one of the few mini series I’ve watched more than once, so many iconic scenes.
Same! I’ve watched it through three times, and that’s extremely unusual for me to do. The scene that jumps out in my memory is his tense and awkward meeting with King George.

I’ve really wanted to see more series like that about other founding fathers, and Ben Franklin seems like a great pick.

You don’t think his position on the Continental Congress or diplomatic role in the war constitutes authority?

First of all... I'm not a historian, so let's not get petty. Secondly, I didn't use the word "Titular," the OP did. I merely stated that some people erroneously assume that he had more authority than he did, so if you feel that his "authority" is being under valued, I'd suggest hashing it out with the OP or Dictionary.com.

I didn't say anything about the word titular? What you said was that you think he didn't have any real authority. It's not petty to point out that he did have significant authority. In fact, in a role that likely changed the course of history. It's not any better to think he had less authority than he did, than to think he had more than he did.

Maybe Ben’s joking too. 😜

No worries! I stumbled across Ben’s tweet and it made me grin. Shared here in hopes it would do the same for you. 🙂

Art’s a funny thing… Timing can play a larger role than we might realize, when it comes to how something lands, or doesn’t. Maybe you weren’t in the space for that show to land in the way it sounds like it eventually did. Maybe you burnt your last piece of toast that morning. Either way, congrats: you’re a human! But the encoursging news here is that you stuck with it - a trait that’s growing increasingly rare. I think of my 11-yo who gives movies a whole 5 minutes. If within that first 5-minutes he doesn’t like it, he’s out. I talk a lot about all the AMAZING experiences one potentially missed out on with that approach. Over time he’s warming to the idea that sometimes, art needs time to grow into our hearts and souls. For those patient enough, sometimes we’re rewarded in ways that refill the tank in meaningful ways.

Anyway, glad you stuck with it and more glad that you shared that update. Thanks!

Wow your sons lucky to have that kind of guidance. Good parenting. Which is hard as we live in an age of shorter and shorter attention spans due to social media etc.
i do remember now what happened. I had only watched the first episode and I remember for some strange reason actually being irritated by it. I did thing the camera angles were quite mediocre. Everything felt clinical. I remember being agitated about not really understanding what was happening. The girl just appearing laying on a desk and thinking what the heck is going on. It felt a bit art house and borderline pretentious. I stopped watching after 20 minutes. I didn’t watch again for around a month. One day I had some time spare and as I had watched everything else on Apple TV and had read so many reviews from people saying how good it was, I was confused. I thought how is it that people are loving this. And decided to try one more time. And yep that was the end of that. Amazing piece of television. And actually really, really well directed after all. It’s sublime.
