Big warning with Microsoft. Microsoft's approach is to throw poo at everything and see if it sticks. If it doesn't it'll shoot it pretty quickly and leave you in the mire. This happens across their cloud offering, their developer tools, their applications, everything. They've got a graveyard larger than Google.

As for windows 11, it's nearly good. But not nearly enough. Most of the new WinUI stuff, which is pretty ok from the top down, is sticky tape, string and mud underneath. It's a mess.

Lemme delete Edge off my machine, dagnabbit.

You want to talk about being forced crappy browsers? How about WebKit on iOS? WebKit is over 90% undocumented. It’s a black box web developers are forced to deal with.

Nobody would use a WebKit browser at all if it weren’t for Apple disallowing anything else on iOS.

I use Edge on my Mac at work. It integrates quite nicely with Active Directory and Microsoft Authenticator. And it uses the Chromium engine (also an undocumented black box) which every website works with.

Interesting. Is there something to give me this feature in Linux (namely, Raspian?)

Yes Linux does...provided you have an Android phone. No distro has made any feature for this for iPhones because that would mean paying for Apple Developer and the majority of these distros work for free.

So until iOS gets sideloading, if you want this feature on Linux, buy an Android.

Ok, this is unexpected. I never would have thought this would ever happen...

If we get more stuff like this and Arm on Windows, I may switch to Windows.

But that search bar on the dock... kinda holding me back.
Limited or not, wonder how Apple feels.
ARM has been on Windows for a long time. The problem has been support for software.

How long before Apple sends cease and desist and updates iOS to block this?

Because I’m sure this is actually against TOS for iMessage, especially the sending part.
I believe this is just using a Bluetooth standard to send and receive messages. My car can also send and receive iMessages. The limitation of this App is that the phone has to be connected to via Bluetooth to the computer.

Redundant. A way to send/receive iMessages for people, who don’t have an iPhone, could be useful. But this is unnecessary!

Not so much software support since Windows for ARM has a translation layer of it's own and games for the most part work great on Windows for ARM. The problem is Windows ARM machines suck and cost more than Apple Silicon Macs. Even the Windows for ARM Developer Kit costs more than an M2 Mac Mini. There's a reason the new Macs are outselling every other laptop on the market, and by the time Windows for ARM is up to snuff it'll be too late, the market will be Mac dominated.

As someone who's been on Win11 for a year, don't.

The only good thing in Win11 is the fact File Explorer has tabs now, a feature macOS and Linux have had for almost two decades now. Everything else about 11 is just baffling UI design.

Just wait for Windows 12 since they're making that update more macOS like from the previews we've seen

I've used Win11. I don't really care for the UI though but that Win12 Preview looks good.

Originally I was planning on wiping Windows from my PC and installing SteamOS when it's desktop installer became available, but Windows 12 got me excited for a new version of Windows since 7. Thank you Redmond for finally starting your photocopiers again

I wouldn't mind so much if this was a feature that could be uninstalled. There is so much bloat in Windows that I long for the days of Windows 7. Even Windows 7 had a lot of unnecessary junk, but it's svelte compared to Win10 and Win11. There is absolutely no call to have tablet centric features on a desktop used for business.

Gawd, if M$ made Excel on the Mac equal to the Windows version, I'd have no reason to use a Windows machine anymore. DoJ needs to look into why M$ is purposefully crippling Mac Office.😠 Duh, it's to keep Windows competitive.😑
Good news, you can uninstall the Phone Link app if you don't want it.

Kinda amusing people still consider Windows to be bloated. I mean, some wouldn't exactly consider macOS to be bloat free either. Can't uninstall Safari, Mail, Calendar, DVD Player (yes, DVD Player is still there), Chess, Grapher, Freeform, etc. However, all of these equivalents can be uninstalled in Windows, with the exception of Edge.

Seeing this prompts the thought: at what point should you stop partaking of bland integrations & partial functionality and instead buy the real thing…

Mac + iPhone really does let everything work optimally. It's a joy.

A lot of people don't need a new computer, and if they did they don't feel like learning macOS, or macOS doesn't support the software they use

Prime example: Gamers. Gamers ain't gonna buy Macs since Macs don't run the majority of games that are on Windows. (And no, buying CrossOver isn't a solution especially when a lifetime license for CrossOver is $500 when Linux has options like Proton for free.)

The reason I have a Mac is because I needed a new laptop and after trying macOS from an M1 Mac Mini I was more open to the idea. Others may not be in the same boat as me or have cash to burn.

How much would it take for Apple to create apps to do this rather than having a sub standard Microsoft effort.

They're not gonna. It's a selling point to get Windows users with iPhones to switch to Mac by showing how much better their iPhone works on Mac compared to Windows, and it works. It got both my dad and uncle, both lifelong Mac haters since the 80s, to get M1 Mac Minis as their new daily drivers. Hell my uncle now is always sad when he has to go into work now since his work laptop is a HP when he just wants a Macbook now.

Feels like Microsoft and Apple are having a closer partnership lately, as a PC gamer and an iPhone user that's great news. Wish it'd develop into a full iMessage support, but that's always a step in a good direction I suppose.
