I'm amazed at all the windows fanboys on here.
...

When people (apple fans) on an Apple board are giving Microsoft kudos for releasing something different, it tells me that the board is not just filled with mindless fanatics... that they value originality and innovation. And more importantly, that they aren't just purely anti-MS, anti-Google - they criticize when companies copy and come up with crap and they also praise them when they are original (or for taking risks).

.

That's the pro model. Don't confuse it with Surface normal.

And without a price point you know it is probably going to be high (they wouldn't be silent if the Pro was remotely price competitive with an iPad). I wouldn't be surprised if this thing was slightly north price-wise compared to a Macbook Air.

Zune video is second (if that's true) only for riding on the coat tails of an OS that everyone gets on their PCs by default. That's akin to braggin' that IE is the king of browsers...yeah...with the head start who wouldn't be?

Zune pass was a good idea though...I'll give you that one. Apple is really obtuse about not doing the true subscription thing... They're not perfect...

someone doesn't know what they are talking about, hint ^^^

The hardware looks, eh, kinda interesting. The air intakes on the "Pro" sounds really lame. And the things looks atrocious from the sides. iPad 2/3 looks more sleek with it's rounded corners.

The smart keyboard thing looks interesting at first glance. A couple problems though. One, we've already seen the cool magnetized cover thing, from Apple two years ago. Microsoft copying that is pretty brazen and reactive, almost Samsung-ish. Two, the low end keyboard is going to suck, no doubt about it. It's like those $1.99 waterproof membrane keyboards which are a nightmare to use. Only the high end one might actually be decent to use. However the big problem is, these cases are useless unless you use the Surface on a, uh, surface like a desk. There is no way you can use the hardware keyboard with this thing on your lap, the width of the keyboard, plus the width of the Surface with the kickstand just won't work, nor be stable enough. Apple's smart cover is actually usable in a relaxed position. Microsoft had that lounge chair and table setup on stage but did they actually use it? I remember Steve up on stage when Apple announced the original iPad and actually demonstrated how easy and fun the iPad was to use in a relaxed position.

Face it, the software is going to suck ass compared to iOS. No one seems to be talking about how this still runs windows, and even hardcore windows fanboys think Windows 8 is horrible.

No price, release date, specs. Maybe Microsoft thinks they can freeze a market by announcing products early like they could 15 years ago. I don't think they can, at best they will kill off some of their own "partners" while iPad's eat up more market share.

iOS6 will probably be out before this tablet ships, and iPad will be mid-cycle with the iPad 4 out a few months after the launch. That doesn't give Microsoft much room to get a foothold.

That said, these things will probably take a (massively distant) second place in the tablet market. I hope Google has something utterly amazing for Google IO, otherwise the Android tablet market is as good as dead.

Surface has tech legitimacy.

The aspect ratio looks a tad elongated like the Toshiba Thrive. When using such products they are essentially made to be held on the horizontal axis.

First saw Microsoft Surface in the movie The Island in the bad guy's office. Ballmer may sink the product as a pitchman. There is no beating the Apple team approach to product rollouts.

Apple should get real and discontinue the 16GB iPad. I had a weird black line coming up on the new iPad. Maybe I'll give it a rest and try the Surface.

Why did Microsoft announce this before it's ready to ship?

My guess is they really feel the need for buzz against the incredible inroads that Apple is having in the enterprise right now. Also the early buzz does not really cannibalize another MS product, except perhaps a few windows licenses for ultra books and the like.

If i was at Dell, Asus, Lenovo or HP i would be somewhat angry at the moment

You do know Zune software doesn't come on Windows PC by default right?

And yes its true....you can google it if you want. What exactly do you find "wrong" with Zune video?

You can rent, you can buy you can download you can stream in 1080p.

What a terrible product....

They said comparable to ultra books and we all know they go from $900-1500 so if you topped out with the 128gb version and added the pen and smart cover, I could easily envision $1200 for this device.

Microsoft will have one HUGE advantage over the iPad: They don't have a laptop line to protect.

If you think Apple is hobbling the iPad to protect their laptops, then you just don't get Apple. Do you think they care that the iPhone is eating into sales of iPods (in a HUGE way)? Of course they don't.

Somehow, I feel you haven't read the comments here. 75% are from fanatic Microsoft fanboys who are in love with this thing.

Aw bless their little cotton socks. It's obviously been a while since the Microsoft fanboys had something to get excited about, they are overcome with emotion.

Let them have their moment and when nobody buys it coz it's ***** then maybe they will go back to their own fanboy sites.

Battery life? Will be interesting.

I'm a little surprised in a good way. Didn't think Microsoft had this in them. They spent way too long in their presentation talking about the keyboard though. They still don't understand ecosystem, content, apps.

We'll see.

Of course, I completely disagree. Microsoft totally understand THEIR ecosystem - and the keyboard IS a killer feature for customers like ME.

Typing on the iPad or any other tablet sucks. Microsoft solved this problem elegantly. It's innovation Apple should have come up with to make the iPad an attractive device for people who have to WRITE a lot. But since Apple is mostly interested in selling content, that was the last thing they worried about.

With the Surface tablet, Microsoft is well positioned to bring tablets into businesses - their concept makes tablets actually USEFUL.

iPad is better because of the metal. This plastic looks cheap...much like the many android phones out there.

What? about being second place a thousand laps down? Yep...you got me...I know only a little about the Zune software (which just duplicates what many hate about iOS to begin with...being tied to a piece of software by the way).

Or about Zune Pass? Zune pass was awesome and thanks to Spotify and Rdio I've finaly got a way to emulate it on an iOS device, but it would be so much better if Apple just let its pride down for a second and inked some subscription deals themselves...

Comparable with ultrabooks isn't much of a price point. The spec has been diluted so much the price standard deviation is probably in the range of $1000 (just look at the price range of Macbook Airs and make it larger if you include PCs).

Why didn't they just come out and say the price point? You know they know the price point. They're intentionally obscuring details so people conflate these two vastly different products and morph them into something with the power of a Macbook Air but size and price of an iPad.

So has it been confirmed this runs about half the resolution of my current tablet of choice? If so, no thanks.

Good luck using that in your lap. If it's going to function like a notebook, you might as well make a notebook.

Hope it has decent touch functionality or it will die quicker than BlackBerry/HP.

This is neither one thing nor the other. Trust Apple to define the things. Trust Microsoft to be clueless about (well, just about everything, really).

No threat here, unless it's $100, which it won't be. Microsoft should be following the X-Box model and practically give it away.

Brave of them to announce a product without a price… clueless. Let the blogger feast commence.
