How can actual work be done on it? If I want a lightweight laptop, I'll get one with a real keyboard.

Surface is an interesting experiment; after numerous software and hardware updates, and a compelling marketplace, it might be ready to buy.

But today - no way in hell.

But really; an integrated kickstand is a feature? Seems like something that will break quite easily.

Well, you can't do real work on an iPad because it doesn't have a full on OS for example, and it lacks that nice real keyboard.

This thing runs a full fledged Windows OS, has a keyboard. So, right off the bat, it'll have a ton of software ( Hell, you can still get DOS programs to run on 7 easily, I doubt 8 will have trouble either. Microsoft has always been anal about compatibility. ), has a real keyboard. And its still ultra portable, and I bet will have better battery life than a mid range Notebook.

Its the first tablet that I've ever slightly considered buying, I find Android and iOS just to limited and primitive for my taste. They feel more like they are made to consume content, not create it, or do work on.

No error for me on firefox.

You don't know people like me. I have to have a lot of different things being a programmer. I have to program for anything, including Macs.

well good for you. If it's work related and you must use a pc, then so be it. If I have to spend my own money on a pc for work, you can just go F'yourself. I don't need my personal life to become my work life.

What did you expect me to say? "The magnet"? Sorry for not playing your "You're a fanboy!" game.

I expected you to explain how it's an iPad ripoff like you claimed and you can't. Why? Because weather or not you want to "play the game" you're a senseless fan boy through and through. You see a competing tablet and by instinct you just claim it's an ipad rip off... Know what an instinct is? It's something you do without thinking.

What's really ironic is that we all try to get away from the typical laptop and migrate over to a tablet (ever since the intro of the iPad 1). Now we figure ways to attach the tablet to a damn dock and a keyboard. If people can, they would probably attach a mouse too. So what does that look like?

Let me guess, a friction' small laptop. Stop trying to make it a laptop.

X100000

I use my iPad for sitting on my couch and laying in bed. If I need to do something more serious, I go for my MBP or iMac. A tablet should be a tablet, not a faux laptop.

I agree about the lack of a portable keyboard (stationary docks are available though), but you'd be surprised how much you can do on an iPad. All you really need for work is iWork (or Office, soon to be available), Mail, Safari, and such.

Multitasking between two apps (example: Safari and iWork) would be something for them to consider adding, though.

So true! I hate shills, specially ones planted by M$!

...

Apple makes perfection. Perfection that starts at only $2199 USD.

I'd keep the sarcastic jabs at Apple pricing toned down a bit until we see what the NEO MS/HP TC1100 / Surface runs a peep whenever it's actually available of course...

I'd take an iPad over a Windows netbook for its superior quality. It can also do more than a netbook, believe it or not. Still, it at least needs a portable keyboard or I won't consider it.

There are several solutions already available for a portable iPad Keyboard from Apple, Targus and other vendors, so there shouldn't be anything holding you from getting an iPad at this point.

I used to think like you, and I use my iPad without an external keyboard most of the time, and have no issues or complains. Keep in mind that Apple is trying to take us to the next level by adding SIRI dictation, so we won't have to rely too much on typing anymore. Sooner or later, a keyboard will be a thing of the past.

Well other than us Page 1 regulars and people that live on tech blog sites, who knew about Surface?

Probably the lucky bastards who had the boatloads of cash to get one themselves, which is a tragically select few.

But even so, like I stated in my quote, Surface is a nice name for a tablet, even if the regular buying public aren't aware of the history behind it.

I don't even have an iPad and would never even consider buying one unless they were to add (guess what?) a portable keyboard attachment.

But really, a picture is worth over 9000 words, depending on the resolution. If I were to list off a lot of design aspects, which is hard to do, there is no way you'd get the picture.

My main problem is the lack of certain keys on the iPad keyboard. I have to switch modes to use them. I could get used to the smaller shift key and closer placement of letters.

Props to Microsoft, they really brought it with their new tablets.

I am definitely planning on getting one of these on release day.

And for anyone saying that the iPad already has BT keyboards, yeah they do, but Microsoft did it better with theirs. It's genius, and beautiful.

Seems like their are a lot of scared fanboys on here, eh?

I wouldn't say Microsoft "brought it" - no details - memory, battery life, etc.

Why pump up the chiclet keyboard if the onscreen keyboard was any good?

My big concern is the chiclet keyboard rubbing up against the screen when closed.

an iPad cannot do more than a high end netbook. That is a flat out lie.

What must you do on a netbook that you can do gracefully on an iPad? Don't tell me flash related crap....

and iPad is superior to any netbook high or low end. End of story.

Haha, remember the Xoom? My friend actually thought that it "pwned" the iPad. Even though its apparent clunkiness and trashiness (fake words, sorry) did not convince him, the insane price tag did.

Unless you count the MacBook Air as a "netbook"...
Well, even then, it doesn't have 4G.

I can see the netbook being useful in certain cases. The iPad and netbook are not total competitors.

You're typing a lot but not saying much of anything. If a picture is worth a thousand words then pick a few out and explain your bogus claim.

Ironically, you yourself have pointed out more differences than similarities between the two. Keep digging friend. Hopefully next time you think before posting.

less resolution
no mobile wireless
no microphone
strange aspect ratio making portrait mode weird (subjective)
no price
no battery life
looks like an ipad with a windows logo
netflix crashed
no media hands-on

I think Steve Ballmer's going to get fired before 2013

Wow... just wow.
Do even know what the term "vaporware" means?

Nicely done MS... now show us the specs and how much they will cost.

That's exactly why it's vaporware.

- When available?
- Hardware specs?
- Battery life?
- Cost!!!!
- Hardware partners notice of eviction?

iOS is a full blown operating system. I find the iPad's onscreen keyboard to be quite nice, along with apples Bluetooth keyboard.

iPad has consumption and content creation apps. Using legacy windows apps with a chiclet keyboard is absurd. Just buy an ultrabook or MacBook air.

He's done worse. Much worse. This is probably one of Microsoft's best-looking products, which matters more than its actual usefulness.

OK, I need a little more

Interesting stuff. Nice touch with the keyboards. 2 different OSes with 2 different processors... no clarity on what software runs on either... and it's still a 10 inch like everybody else's tablet. Someone needs to make a 12, 13, 14, or 15 inch version and then we'll be talking. Give me a 27 inch iMac that's as thin as a desk blotter that sits flat on the desk and is all touchscreen and I'm all in!

The iPad should have one USB port, though, or support for some kind of USB accessory (wireless or Dock Connector).

You get more done on the iPad because it doen't crash and lose your data, no worries about viruses, and no distractions from lag caused by low system resources and apps running in the background.

Now that is coming from experience. I actually hope this thing will sell. So that many will waste their money on it and finally put a nail in the windows mobile platform. They should just try making software for android and iOS and stay away from trying to eat that pie. There is no room for Microsoft at the dinner table

You have the typical PC mentality. You don't want to pay for anything! You don't want another device such as an ATV, you don't want to buy accessories. Hell, you want everything including the kitchen sink in a tablet. And also 60 days stand-by time and 2 days straight power use battery use.

It's never gonna work for you - apple products - so just stick with the pc junk.
What the hell are you talking about? You have made a lot of wrong assumptions. I am most interested in the tablet that runs Windows RT. I don't care for x86 compatibility. All of the accessories are optional as much as they are on an iPad. Microsoft actually went and designed the accessories that's best for their tablets. And who said the accessories come with the tablet? If anything, they are all separate from the tablet so that you can buy them. Isn't that the idea? Is that the idea of any company? Why do you think Microsoft released the Xbox at a loss?

And if can get a device as thin as the iPad that has standby for 60 days and can run for 2 days straight, then dam yes I want it. And yes, anything that's not made by Apple is junk.
