I love the smell of vaporware in the morning.

I think anyone who thinks these things will have serious enough horse power to run full applications at anything meaningful in terms of speed is the real moron here.

Why would you think that? Core i5 Ivy Bridge too slow for ya?

It has the potential to replace a laptop, tablet and desktop. We'll see how well it's executed.

No battery life or release date means they have a lot of work to do yet.

Visual Studio 2010 runs great on a crappy $300 atom netbook....perhaps 'moron' was overstated, but use your head for something besides a hat rack ;)

Kids

Just like we have Godwin's law, we should have a law about writing M$, especially if written by an Apple fan-boy.

Microsoft or Apple or Google or SONY or whatever. I just don't understand that kind of corporate idolization. Replace Apple with Bieber and you could all be a bunch of 12 year old girlies.

You Sure???

The Pro version has the same specs as the entry level Macbook Air, which can run office flawlessly and get reasonable frame rates in diablo (though I wouldn't push the hardcore 3D games with it). The interesting point on it will be the battery life but it'll have plenty of horsepower.

I am waiting to see how hot this thing runs and how long the battery last.

This is why I keep wondering what bloatware they will push on consumers. :D

My take is MS got spooked by the new MacBook Pro and Air’s.

If you you’re a Pro and have the money to buy then you can get a very powerful machine that’s low weight and has good battery life. If you don’t need all that power and need a smaller price tag then the new Air’s will fit the bill. I just can’t see where the Pro version of Surface fits in. Like Cook said it’s a compromise. If you need a full OS then the Air does it. If you just want iPad like functionality and portability then iPad is it. The new Surface doesn’t offer anything new just MS OS’s on two flavors of tablets. But I still feel regardless of which one you may buy you’ll be making compromise especially if the Pro versions are priced at ultrabook/Air type prices.

I’d also say it’s more about what they didn’t announce which is the frightening part. For tablets to be effective the need battery life and to be “always on” solutions. I’m not sure either of these will offer a compelling case in either.

Finally USB ports. As soon as you add one then you open yourself up for power drain along with external devices which don’t configure correctly. Tablets should be connectionless devices. You can see where this will go once you start plugging in various devices into the unit. Tears.

Justin Beiber doesn't have a retina display.

But seriously, I grew up a Sony guy (walkman/discman etc). Went Google for a while (Android, Gmail), and now i'm with Apple. I love Apple stuff and I wouldn't go anywhere else.

But I feel the same way about Keen shoes, Oakley sunglasses, Fender Telecasters and Precision Bases.

If people have a passion for Apple products, let them have it. If you don't like it, ignore it. But don't insult people for loving their macs and iDevices, because that's more pathetic than any "corporate idolization"

i'm guessing failure.

You always have to choose, battery life or performance. Photoshop will either run god awful slow, or not for very long on this thing. People will quickly realize that they cannot have their cake and eat it too.

And without an ecosystem of apps that play nicely on the lower power versions, your back to an expensive device that essentially lets you surf, email, and read PDF's. I think it's a cool device, but like other well spec'd tablets that failed, I just don't see how they can compete.

The "Surface?" What a terrible name! I though M$ were marketing geniuses?

They're invoking the touch surface tables they released for hotels and casinos probably close to a decade ago. Pretty good marketing in that it shows "we aren't new to the game" but it does draw attention to the fact that they are, well, new to the game

I think his point was more related to the use of M$. People have every right to idolize anything they choose to. But choosing to idolize Apple while referring to Microsoft as M$ reeks of fanboism.

Probably be a nightmare. OS X isn't optimized for touch screens let alone small touch screens.

Yea but the touch keyboard attachment whatever it is has a trackpad and keyboard.... and the "Pro" version has a core i5 processor so........ maybe...? :D

No release date

No price

No spec

Reminds me of the HP Slate that Balmer showed on stage...

The HP slate he showed was the next ipad killer.

Maybe this one is it too?

I think they should have started with the portable xbox concept, get some experience and then make their tablet.

As we can see from all the posts the competitive nature of both camps for the most part doesn't analyze things properly.

Let's get the prices , specs, hold one , have users report and then it's time to judge.

Not everything other companies besides Apple make is bad!

I have passion for Apple products as well. As well as for some Microsoft stuff - especially some of their developer stuff. But some of the posters here seriously need some perspective.

Okay, that's fair. I misunderstood. It is fair to say that if Microsoft Office were released for the first time today, people here would say "That crap will never sell".

How does an Core i5 Ivy Bridge system, with it's built in GPU, which I assume will power the graphics, compare in computing power with what is in the iPad3 today?

I know we are not sure of what Ghz the i5 is going to be running at, but it's a very powerful CPU as far as I understand even at a modest clock.

I know an item is not all about raw horsepower for many, but being able to carry on working with the apps on the move you were working on at home/work will be a boon to many, without having to carry a tablet and a laptop with you

Core i5 isn't the problem - it's the amount of RAM that is. I haven't seen the specs for how much memory the Surface has (but maybe I missed it somewhere).

Why is that?

Not disputing the possibility, however Apple (and Android for that matter) have a great start, with lots of developers having produced some good products already, with others announced.

I would imagine many devs will be falling over themselves to get their apps/games up and running on the Microsoft Tablets.

The sooner you can get your app there for sale (in a limited market for a while till it builds up) the more chance you get of not being swamped by all the junk.
