for those that questioned my low price on this tablet

$450 is about all I would pay for a MS tablet, I know it won't be that cheap just listed what I would pay for it.

Still the keyboard in the cover is a great idea as are the processors/storage, but seriously if I need a full blown computer, and I might now, I'll just go with an MBA.

The iPad is a great content tool and will help me in my classes, but it won't be in lieu of a laptop and/or my iMac. I suspect the Surface tablet might be a little bit more helpful for many students.

Same here, and both times I remember it being an OS demonstration.

Not with iOS and definitely not a completely unresponsive system. Also if you watch the part just before the crash, Sinofsky repeatedly fails to do a gesture while saying how smooth/easy it is. (Here's the direct link to that part, followed by the crash) How can executives not fully rehearse for this kind of thing?

Unreleased software on prototype hardware. Things happen.

That's the thing. You won't have to use the Surface on a table, either. If you're sitting on your couch, it'll have an onscreen keyboard, same as the iPad. But if you need a keyboard to type some long winded thesis about the history of African pottery, well hey...there go you. It has a keyboard built into the smartscreen. Flip it out and go to town.

Please stop making practical uses for a built in keyboard that is optional to use.

Since the case fits right on and flips back too, it will always be available if you want it. That means even if you want to type a forum post at your desk you can just flip it forward and type it.

Except this wasn't a hand-on article from a tech blog but a fully prepared presentation given by the company. That's why you rehearse the heck out of it.

If it's something to do with the wireless network that's understandable because sometimes it's just impossible to control. But this was just a poor preparation on Microsoft's part. Then again, I begin to think being awkward is in Microsoft's marketing gene.

1. Not to scale.
2. Can you fold a laptop keyboard behind the laptop body?
3. Do most laptops have touchscreens?
4. Do most laptops weight as light or lighter than a tablet?

When was the last time a non-Apple, non-current events news topic got close to 2000 responses here at Macrumors?

At least Microsoft generated buzz. I can't remember when I was last interested in an MS product, only two products come to mind (the Xbox360 and the Courier prototype), this is the third time.

PS: MS Windows8 phone event is later today. Maybe some news how their smartphones and Surface will work together

Wait until the Vizio laptop/PC's are released.
You'll see a new record for posts.

Nearly 2000 posts. Microsoft must be really desperate for this to be a success for them to send out so many trolls onto all the Apple message boards. I don't know why they bothered, I wouldn't have thought Apple fans would be their target audience. I wonder if Monkey Boy will get the axe if this thing tanks.

I've used (or should that be endured) Microsoft products for many years until I just got so fed up with them that I made the switch to Mac when I started my own business. I'm certainly not going to move back now.

So go ahead MS trolls. It won't make any difference. People will make their own mind up. In a few months they will go into their local electronics shop, pick up the Surface and play with it then compare it to the iPad and decide. My guess based on previous experience is that most of them will continue to chose the iPad.

What are the chances Microsoft does something radical, like sell the Surface for some ridiculously low price like $100-200, and they try to make all the money on app sales?

Kinda like how Xboxes and Playstations are sold for losses but they make it up big time in the game sales.

What are you talking about ? Seems to me the nearly 2000 posts is people bashing this. Why would Microsoft send out "trolls" to bash their products ?

To me, it looks more like some kind of insecurity on the part of the more "hardcore" Mac user base.

Looks cool. However, Microsoft marketing team- that video is not the way to showcase the device. I'd watch an archaeology show if I wanted to see rocks chipped away at.

Its actually a great video, its an introduction to a new product. like it or not for 99% of people they base 1st impressions on looks alone.

Keyboard...so what?

I don't get the hype about the keyboard...they've had keyboards for the ipad pretty much since day one. Android and windows devices always tout features that iOS doesn't have (and yes, there are many bells and whistles missing from iOS), but iOS and the iPad will never be beat until android and windows devices have the BASICS...simple media syncing between all devices, an interface that doesn't lag with every touch, long battery life, and reliability.

Not sure if this was meant as good or bad, but IMO it's VERY good. Apple talked a big game about the post PC era, but all they did was add a device to the PC world, not replace anything. The surface truly looks like it will help usher in a post PC era.

I don't currently own a Windows machine, so I might pick up a pro version to have something around just to have something to use Windows software on (games and such) and to have as a backup PC. A lot of it depends on reviews and how good the product is, but at least Microsoft gets some credit for trying something interesting.

Wow, my iPad has never crashed or hung doing simple things like web browsing.

Mine crashes occasionally. What it does more often is load webpages with lots of graphics on them VERY slowly, some websites don't even load any of the graphics. It's an ipad3, and my ipad2 seems like it loaded webpages much much faster for some odd reason. The web browser does crash a LOT if I'm loading 2 or 3 tabs and one of the pages is graphics intensive.

I've followed this enormous thread over the last couple of days with amusement. Some (somewhat obvious) observations:

* A lot of people on this thread seem to be very interested in a tablet-ish netbook-ish form factor for running Windows (full blown or otherwise). Obviously, for those folks, this will be the product to get, though with unknowns like RAM it remains to be seen how well the "pro" version will perform - but time will tell.

* It's clear that the big selling points seem to be the storage, keyboard and the ability to run Win 8. While I'm not in the market for a Windows solution for anything in particular, definitely hoping to see Apple step up with at least more storage on their next iPad variant. Keyboard isn't that interesting to me based on how I use my iPad.

Microsoft (in my opinion) has in the past struggled with execution and also with a focused vision. We'll see how they do here. If they can actually execute, Windows users will have a worthy device to use. But like in the Canon / Nikon wars in which I participate and where the manufacturers leap-frog spec-wise, there's nothing so enticing that I'd see "jumping ship". I like iOS and Mac OS X a great deal and one of the few people brave enough to say I like the direction of both :D.

Would I add one of these to my arsenal? Maybe, just maybe for work - it still tends to be Windows based but that said, there are a lot of other toys in the lineup ahead of that (more centered on those pesky Canon / Nikon wars and a new rMBP ;))
