Apple is getting a lot of money from Google. As long as the payments continue, not expecting anything to change.

The EU definitely feels that iOS user base is significant which is why they think it's unfairly anticompetitive that Apple has such power, control, dominance, etc. over the mobile OS market. The EU wants to see more app access (sideloading and alternative app stores) competition in that notable segment of the market.
I understand the argument. But the issue with sideloading beyond the security argument Apple has made (which I think is the most compelling one) is that sideloading devs don’t want to pay anything to Apple.

So simultaneously they are saying Apple provides nothing of value but at the same time it’s existentially valuable to them as businesses?

It’s only anti competitive if Apple refuses to distribute apps. The eu sees that selling of apps in itself as a competitive thing. But no consumer cares as long as they can get software safely and quickly. And they can.

So it’s a non argument. I truly believe if any of these companies were European owned the EU would not be lobbying. It’s interesting that Spotify is a European company and the companies that will lose out from the DMA stuff are all American.

If Google continues making their 1st page biotoilet I will replace search engine myself. And probably to DuckDuckGo

The headline is childish and misleading. Is this the quality of the people on this site? … This is lazy reporting.

I agree with you on the choice of headline wording, but bear in mind these “stories” are typically summaries of stories from actual news sites.

This is about Apple stifling app access competition by its restrictions on sideloading and alternative app stores in a major segment of both the mobile and tablet OS markets. The other hope would be that having Apple open up iOS and iPadOS to sideloading and alternative app stores would encourage them to make these operating systems even stronger/better by having to address the availability of sideloading, alternative app stores, etc.

Apple (with iOS) and Google (with Android) dominate the mobile and tablet OS markets and therefore IMO deserve antitrust scrutiny not just in the EU but the U.S. and other countries/regions as well.

I hate google and detest bing - there needs to be a new search engine…
With Arc Search you can still use Google but it can help you search for information and put it in a page with AI.

The EU have taken testimony from other parties other than Apple and have found that it is possible to provide sufficient security for customer machines if you open up the system.

But the emperical evidence is that iOS products have nowhere near the exploits android has had over the last 15yrs. Some Android phones even have anti virus software running in the background! That’s unheard of on iOS.

So how did they come to this conclusion other than listening to “expert witnesses” who all have a vested interest in the open systems market or security industry?

MacOS although safer than windows is nowhere near as safe as iOS yet people use this as justification for opening up iOS. It’s illogical. It’s just pretty obvious that the more doors are open in any system (or any structure known to man) the more chances their are too exploit that system. That’s just a fact.

Yet the EU are pretending that is not true in the interest of commerce , not consumer benefit or safety. And if iOS were the only system in town as windows pretty much was back in the day, I think the EU would have a point. But it’s not. 80% of users in the eu use a system other than iOS!!

So again, rather than helping me the consumer the EU are removing my right to choose a system that suits my needs to favour some money making corporation who wants to make money out of me. Ridiculous really when you think about it.

With all of Apple's talent and resources, I am confident they will be able to keep iOS safe and secure for those liking the way it is now, while satisfying antitrust regulations and customer demand for sideloading, alternative app stores, etc. All of this would result in more choice and competition which is a good thing.

You said you despised Google.
I asked if you despise Apple for taking $18,000,000,000 from them.
It's a simple question really.
Not a simple question at all.

What does my dislike of google have to do with Apple doing business with google?

I couldn’t care less about apples business anymore than apple couldn’t care less about me disliking google.

So it’s irrelevant

Apple has to do something about replacing Google
As long as Google is paying Apple$15 billion a year to be the default search engine on iOS / iPadOS, there's no incentive for Apple to do anything. I agree with you but Apple's in love with that money.

So, you don't despise Apple for taking $18 billion from despicable Google.
Got it.

If I want to search an answer these days, I'll use a search engine later. I'll use the free version of ChatGTP and typically it gives me the specific details of what I was after. From hardware explanations, software explanations, who made what's, specifications etc. ChatGTP for me is 10 times faster than a browser, no matter which one, and I also save even more time by not being distracted.

You will have to know that ChatGPT relies on a search engine (could be google) to search for its results then look into them to find the exact piece of info you need. Thats how it works AFAIK , so search engine quality does affect ChatGPT answer.

I'm curious about to what extent it learns. If a user corrects it, or explains that a suggested solution doesn't work, and then it suggests another way, and then the user says "that worked", to what extent does it if at all learn?

an example for me was an excel formula issue - and normally chatgtp provides the formula instantly, which is much quicker than google. It typically does provide how-to's when using the apple os terminal as well. I had problems with converting internet downloaded numbers as they would not sort correctly. Chatgtp said try cleaning and trimming formulas. It also asked for me to paste the data in so it could check it. Chatgtp said if its internet data there can be hidden information that excel may not properly clean. I then put the cleaned data which did not sort properly, into textedit, and then hit plain text. I copied and pasted those back and those numbers sorted properly. Chatgtp quickened that process but I wondered whether it would learn my external text cleaning solution. I later wondered if chatgtp would have cleaned that text for me itself ... I doubt it, but ...

The crazy thing is that chatgtp is very powerful for fixing apple OS issues. It takes a long time to find a solution on Apple's web site, or via internet seaches which often land one onto a youtube page where one has to suffer extended explanations amongst advertisements (I don't pay for a free add youtube). Chatgtp provides a solution straight away ... yet apple you used to be focused on ease of use, doesn't.

I suspect AI will result in much less reliance on OS knowledge. Which does open the door to Unix and its low cost potential. I wonder how Microsoft etc will counter all that ...

As i recall, early on, you could paste long random word strings into google until it gave you just a few images derived from the algorithm. You could then copy & paste that same search string into bing and it’d give you the exact same images as its result, proving that bing was just sending searches to google. I imagine MS‘s bing team scrambled to get their own algorithm up & running but I cant imagine it made anyone like Apple want to put their confidence in them.
