What do people need this vast amount of cloud storage for? I have had a DropBox account for years and never paid a penny for additional storage.....

I have about 1.5 GB of files that I want to access mobile on the DropBox drive and over 20GB of Music that I store with Google music for free...

Everything else I store on a 2 TB backup drive connected to my local network.

That plus streaming SlingBox, Netflix, Pandora etc...... problem solved.

Well personally I have a kid and a wife, a camera, a phone and a GoPro - hence more than 150gb of photos and video that I want backed up. Having lost "backup" data to external hard drive death in the past I choose the cloud as a reliable destination.

Yes, I'm in the same boat as you. At present I have my photos backed up to my smugmug account but would love a second option. I'd prefer apple but they are too tight to offer good deals like this so maybe I'll give MS a try.

The cloud isn't a reliable destination. For something as important and irreplaceable as photos, I'd strongly recommend keeping a local copy at home on an external HDD or a NAS.

By all means use the cloud as a storage solution, but never use it as your sole storage solution!

Isn't the beauty of services like DropBox, that even if your computer dies, your online copy is still safe and waiting for you to either access your data, or install the client on a new/another computer to carry on.

I use Dropbox (I've got circa 18 gig capacity) and I have it installed on several computers.

It's on my main machine (MBP) and also on a couple of HP Microservers that I run, so even if one computer went bang, my data is still immediately available on 2 more local machines (not to mention the online copy).

Yes, but they can't be relied on as your primary and soul source of your data.

For example, I use Dropbox and OneDrive. I stopped using OneDrive for a period of time because a bunch of my files became corrupt due to a sync issue which rendered the documents useless. If I had no backup then I would have been in a really bad situation.

Also, a cloud storage provider is not a bullet proof solution. As an example, many people lost their Flickr content (which was completely unrecoverable) due to a mistake. Whilst extremely rare, this could easily happen to your Dropbox, Google Drive & OneDrive accounts.

It really depends on how much you value your data at the end of the day. If it's not important then don't back it up. If it is, then back it up regularly!

Some of us, love ourselves more than we love Apple. You wouldn't understand.

No I don't. And I'm the type of person who would complain if I think I'm being ripped off. That being said, I'm reasonable.

The cloud is much more reliable than a hard drive.

As much as I use cloud storage solutions on a daily basis, I can't agree with this at all. You are not in overall control of your data. It can be deleted, corrupted & censored with no comeback.

As an example, one of my friends had a bunch of photos flagged and removed as they contained nudity. This again emphasises my point about not being in full control of your data.

You can't blame the cloud provider if the user doesn't read the terms of service.

Downloaded and installed on a Windows system and a Mac system. Product could not run on either longer than a minute or two before it either crashed or hung. Clearly not ready for actual public use, needs months more Beta exposure.

lol... what did you download?

Onedrive uses a web portal. All you do is go to onedrive.com and log in

You can use the web portal, but there's also a Mac and a Windows app that you download and install on your computer.

The actual "OneDrive" folder that gets created, is what contains the files/folders that you then see in the web portal.

I use the OD app on my MacBook Pro, works fine for me.

Now Google Drive is UNLIMITED for $10 a month.

Dropbox needs a new business model. It's a feature, not a product.

I've been and still am a Dropbox user. I love that service and pay for extra space. I also use Office 365 and am pretty happy with it so far, moreso since I won a free one-year 5-user account.

The way I see it - for my use - is that I will soon have access to 5TB of storage space PLUS Office 2011/2013/iOS for about $70 per year (I bought a user code on Amazon for $64 plus shipping) for roughly 60% of the cost of 100GB of storage space in my Dropbox account. This works for me, and I'll be going back to a free Dropbox account soon.

Dropbox - tag, you're it.

If someone wants to make some serious bank, make a program that connects to all the free cloud storage sites on the web and makes it look like one large storage space to the user. Use raid tech to combine the cloud drives and offer encryption/decryption to satisfy the security conscious. If the raid was dynamic and could rebuild if one site went dark (or the source company decided it wasn't cool), more the better. you could also offer the option to connect to multiple paid sites if you really wanted larger storage.

If you do it, give me a free copy :)

Anyone know

1. about one drive upload speeds and sync errors?

2. whether they have started allowing folder upload from the web access?

I have tried to use one drive back with it was skydrive and when it would not allow upload of folders from the web that made it a nonstarter.

I like dropbox for it's ubiquity but I have real issues with the cost per GB now that the others are looking like 1TB for 100/year is going to be the standard.

I like google drive for the price but upload speeds are horrible for large files. I uploaded a 1 GB video file and it took seemingly a full day to upload. I thought it was just me but a quick search in their own forums showed this was a prevalent issue.

Half the files came back with sync error: "The file path cannot contain the following characters: \ / : * ? “ < > |" Forget it.

Uh, most would complain if "they feel" they're being ripped off. Some just set that level a lot higher when it comes to the company they worship. In this case Apple.

And forgive me, I missed the memo that stipulates your standards of reason are the norm by which everyone should follow.

Yeah you're forgiven. I surely didn't send it but still it's good when you have contrition

Sold. Was looking for a cloud storage solution to dump a vast majority of my documents. Google Drive and Office 365 were the major competitors. Yes Google Drive is cheaper, but with Office 365 up to 5 users get 1TB of free storage so I can upgrade my family. Searching around on eBay you can find boxed Office 365 packs for as little as $50, so its probably a better proposition than Google Drive at least for me.

Finder shows folder icons in my Dropbox folder.

Really?

Custom folder icons that you have pasted onto a folder? It doesn't work for me. What version of OS and DropBox are you running?

----------

People still use folder icons? How retro.

Many people still use SL too!

Folder icons are really useful to VISUALLY organise you file structure. Great in the sidebar, toolbar and on the desktop (aliases).

Even better when your OS allows them to be colourful.

You're right, it doesn't work. I was misled by the fact that some Dropbox folders do show icons.

Has anyone been able to find the date this will happen?

I was hoping to get a chunk of stuff uploaded before I left on vacation, but I'm running out of time. I will obviously do what I can until I run out of space, but I've got plans for that 1TB! :p
