Is it me or is the default autocorrect on iOS broken?

Compared to Google we’re in the dark ages.

Besides it being extremely limited there are some strange things going on: I have to constantly switch between multiple languages and obviously I forget to manually do this. And then words from different languages get mixed up as it’s “autolearning”. But I also see strange words (from other people?) appearing.

Still, I never use third party keyboards because the iOS implementation also leaves a lot to be desired in terms or reliability.

Are you me? This is exactly right. Drives me crazy. If every Android phone wasn’t garbage that gets abandoned in 8 months I probably would have switched over this already.

I type in English and Polish. I had to switch to Gboard after SwiftKey support was dropped and it became very glitchy. Gboard is still better than Apple's keyboard, but SwiftKey had a good feeling to it, so I'm excited it's coming back. Apple keyboard is just tragic for languages they don't develop, like Polish. It's probably the worst aspect of having an iPhone as a Polish-speaking person. It's like your phone got stuck back in 2009. No swiping, no prediction, no auto multi-lingual typing. Just awful.

*Exactly* this happens to me too. I even made a thread about it but everyone seemed to think I was holding it wrong.

Apple spends so much time and enormous amounts of money on so many projects and just absolutely ignores core functionality.
Those people are infuriating. I've used ios for over 10 years, it's never been like this lol. Telling me I'm in inaccurate typer is laughable...

I can only use my iPhone with SwiftKey. It has many bugs (crashes and freezes several times a day) and it's not perfect but it still beats the built in keyboard by far. It has multi-language support in a single keyboard, swipe to type in all languages (not just English and a select few), and autocorrect seems to be slightly less terrible than iOS.

The iOS keyboard is an absolute joke though. I don't think I could go a single day with it. Just having to switch between keyboard languages on a per-app basis a million times a day is ridiculous, trying to keep track of which keyboard to select for which person before starting a conversation is a nightmare. And the lack of swipe to type and word suggestions in most languages is also lame. It's 2022, not 2007.

When SwiftKey crashes, the iOS keyboard switches back to the built-in keyboard, which you don't always notice until you've tried typing 10 words and they've all been autocorrected to something totally different. A neat trick is that you can completely remove the iOS keyboard leaving only SwiftKey, so when it does crash, it's forced to restart itself.

Gboard is terrible, it crashes maybe 50% of the time I type and freezes completely, making typing impossible until you restart the app.

Swype was all right but I seem to get better autocorrect with SwiftKey.

And... that's about all there is. I don't get why all the other keyboards focus on themes and colors when what we really need is a keyboard that improves the typing experience, not one with poneys in the background.

That said, I really hope they make improvements because to me one of the worst things with using a smartphone is the keyboard.

If I had one wish, it would be this: If I type a word, and I spelt it correctly, please, don't change it. Please. For the love of God. Just leave it. Also, if I type a word and only ONE letter is wrong, just try changing that one letter before adding 7 more. I'm so tired of typing something like "Tablw" and having it be corrected to something like "Tabloids". If that was the word I meant, why would I have just completely forgotten to type 3 whole letters? Seems like an impossible problem to fix after all these years. We now have AI and all kinds of amazing tech yet we're still here typing with the same tech we had when the iPhone came out in 2007.
You can turn off autocorrect FWIW (everyone should because it’s horrible).

Google had already implemented something similar in the GPay app. The island area at the top acts as a shortcut to the Google Wallet where you can complete a transaction.

I mean, it's kinda helpful but I can always just open up the Google Wallet by swiping down for notifications/quick access.

I've seen Apple's marketing showing the timer. Whoop de do! Google has an icon at the top to tell you if it's running...

...and if you swipe down, you can see the timer without having to go into the app.

I just don't see how the dynamic island or Google's implementation of it is such a great feature. I will interact with the dynamic island very infrequently. You know what I do use quite frequently? The keyboard!

Look how primitive the iOS keyboard is compared to Gboard. Why should I have to break from typing my message to navigate to another section that has numbers and special characters? Why not provide a number row at the top and allow the period to serve as a button for punctuation like Google does?

Early on, phones were small so perhaps they couldn't add a number row. But we don't have that constraint now. In fact, the iPhone 6+ came out in 2014 so Apple has had 8 years to get this right. Pathetic.

My most recent iPhone was the 11 Pro and I'm not upgrading until I see USB-C and changes to the keyboard. I'll stick with Android as my main phone until then. BTW, the Pixel 7 Pro is amazing!
With the exception of GBoard being a better keyboard (I switch between Android and iOS fairly frequently and GBoard is hands down the best for me), everything you've listed here is still more work on Android.

Timers in the dynamic island show you how long is left, why would somebody just want to see if it was running? Swiping down (twice) to access Google Wallet is fine, but I'd rather just very quickly double press the button on the side. There are things Android can do better, but these were strange things to pick out.

I did that last year, but still used auto suggest, tapping it rather than letting it automatically insert. But now that is broken too.

Swipe typing is terrible on iOS keyboard. When I try to type ‘and’ it always wants to change it to andy or andrew, neither of which are in my contacts and neither of which did I go anywhere near. It didn’t used to be so bad, it’s just gotten worse and worse.

That one never felt good to me. I use the Google one which does have keys and such where I like them. To each their own, but glad 3rd party are allowed.
Note that these 3rd party keyboards pretty much always require you to grant FULL access to your iOS device - a massive security concern i.e. everything you type can potentially be data mined. That's why whenever you're required to enter text into a password field you'll notice Apple override the 3rd party keyboard with their own (that doesn't have this concern). If any of these 3rd party keyboards are free then just run away, and even if they cost money you still can't really trust the developer's Privacy Statement because Apple DO NOT verify or stand behind it - they only display what the developer says he does. Many shady apps have been caught in violation of their privacy statements! Apple just need to step up with a MUCH more functional keyboard because they are virtually by definition the only keyboard you can trust.

Good news. Since Swype died SwiftKey is the best. Used to be a battery hog but that's been sorted. And having multiple languages available simultaneously is a godsend (anyone who thinks the iOS keyboard does this doesn't know what they're talking about)

If iOS had a decent keyboard, this wouldn't even be an issue. I would rather have an iOS keyboard with an optional number row and multi-punctuation key than a "dynamic island." That and USB-C. Sadly, that would've been progress.

iOS...............................................Gboard........................................Gboard - hold period for punctuation

See, one thing I never miss when I leave Android are the keyboards. I think that the iOS keyboard is better for my use than any alternative I have tried on Android. I can see people wishing iOS allowed a bit more customization on the keyboard, but for me I think that tapping the button to get to the comma is faster than long pressing the period key. I also like the consistency of the Apple keyboard and how it looks like the rest of my phone instead of seeming like something separate. The key sizes also work perfectly for my fingers and I have higher accuracy on iOS. I don't like Swiftkey compared to Google's keyboard on Android because I don't need my spacebar saying "Microsoft" on it. That alone disqualifies Swiftkey from being on my device. Google and Samsung offer my favorite keyboards on Android. But Google's is my choice because at least it directly integrates into Google's services instead of attempting to force Samsung's services.

More work? Swiping down once to get the timer? In what situation do you need to the see the timer obsessively? The whole point of a timer is to tell you when a certain amount of time has passed. If you need to constantly look to see how much time you have left, then perhaps staring at the clock is best. I just don't see what the great innovation of the dynamic island is. It's just another gimmick like the Touch Bar.

I hate double pressing for Apple Pay. I want the payment action to be deliberate so swiping down IMO is much better. The power button should just be for powering a phone on/off. Having to press the power button and volume up/down to turn the phone off is stupid.

Time to delete GBoard. I downloaded it after hearing SwiftKey was going but it hasn't been as good
