There is a fairly serious limitation I wasn't expecting. It won't open files created in an older file format (in this case 97-2003). See the image below.

Is this right? For some reason I have a huge number of files in this format. I'm surprised it won't open them. This makes it seriously less useful to me.

Of course they were inspired by many different things, but I think it's very hard to say they didnt get at least some design cues from Metro.

I don't think Microsoft gets enough credits for Metro. It was the flag bearer for the design trend and it took everything to extreme which required a lot of courage on forward thinking on their part.

I'm probably feeding trolls but I take it neither of you have watched the keynote?

Metro is a horrid botched attempt at a modern UI. If you need a refresher on your history. The first iPhone came out when Windows Vista had arrived earlier that year (circa 2007). If you recall, the iPhone was a game changer with a revolutionary new user interface. One that was simple and lacked all the stupid nonsense of Windows Vista.

I see iOS 7 as building on top of this strong foundation. In some ways it actually supports a lot of the glitz and glitter Vista had but it is done in a much more effective way. It is not 'flat' but rather 'hierarchical'. And yes, it still has textures but you have to have an eye for design to appreciate them.

finally! microsoft office has made the greatest decision of it's life, thank you microsoft!
imma download it as soon as possible, i hope it's up to my mark.

Office 365 can view any format, but can only edit Word docs saved in (.docx) Office 2007 or higher.
It's in the documentation.

How do I make a new powerpoint? Or is it not possible? I can make a new word or excel document.

Please quote me.

DOA app, so crippled.

Also, Microsoft's marketing needs to get a clue and stop with the dumb naming. "Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers"...really?

But it is Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers! What part of that don't you understand?

Simply calling it Office Mobile would be misleading to users.

I know it is, but it's foolishly long for an app name! Why not just call it Office 365 Mobile? Microsoft has no idea how to concisely brand anything.

I hope this encourages Apple to update iWork, which is long overdue.

As a professional writer, I've used Word for many years and still do for its excellent spell and (to an extent) grammar checkers. I also like the fact that Word files are universally accepted.

However, Word tries to do too much. It's a "word processor" not a page layout program. It does far more than I'm sure 95% if it's users want.

Pages suffers from that to an extent, too, but remains less bloated and easier to use. If only its proofing tools were a bit better.

I recently used Pages to write a book on my iPad and MacBook and enjoyed the seamless iCloud syncing.

Surely a new iWork will be with us soon. When it is, I'll seriously consider dumping Word.

You mean like how the "proof reader" on Pages tells you to use gender-neutral words?

Have you ever even used Office? It's not bloat ware, at all. And it's not just corporate users, it's the most popular in the education and home market. Why? It just works, and it's easily the best.

And dull? It's for getting work done and bring productive, not playing angry birds

If its so irrelevant then why does it have over a billion users and 90%+ market share?

Why hasn't any other office suite been successful?

Have to agree here - our projects at work would be screwed without full blown versions of Office everywhere. Just the way it is.

Not to revive an old thread, but I've been sorely disappointed by this iPhone app. What they need to do an iPhone equivalent of the beautiful Office apps they've created for the iPad. Either that or I'm heading back to Docs to GO or iWork.
