I dont see how people are thinking this is a bad thing. Dont buy it.

Thats just stupid talk, everyone knows that if the product is related to Microsoft in any way shape or form then on this forum it is like selling your soul to satan and sleeping with his evil twin.

Excellent news, maybe they can make an iphone version of powerpoint so I don't have to print all my slides everytime I go to a class.

Why would anyone care whether it's apple iWork or microsoft office that brings office-like functionality? As long as it works.

Please explain this...

If you look at the terms of use for the iPhone SDK, MS Mobile can't download and use it. This isn't new, but the old workaround-- hiring a contractor to analyze it for you-- was anticipated in the SDK license agreement. MS has no clue what the SDK looks like, so the whole point of developing on the iPhone, for them, boils down to being able to legitimately use it.

2nded. A Powerpoint viewer for the iPhone would be great at least. I don't understand why the iPhone doesn't support viewing PPT files, given that it does support Excel and Word. People email me PPT files all the time!

This is standard the Microsoft MO with Apple. Become a developer, get the tools, learn all you can about the system, then release your own copy. That's exactly how Windows was developed in the 80s.

You hit the nail on the head.

This line:

"Microsoft is taking a serious look into the iPhone SDK for the possibility of launching their own iPhone-specific applications."

Should be written as:

"Microsoft is taking a serious look into the iPhone SDK for the possibility of launching their own iPhone knockoff called the ZunePhone or something equally inane."

I could be wrong, but I thought you could only use a France unlocked iPhone in the borders of France, but you can use every France carrier. But not go outside the country? Could be wrong:confused:

That point has been a murky to me as well - I can't seem to find any definitive word on it, and different people have given conflicting reports.

Since firmware version 1.1.3 was released, the last I read about this was that it does work with any SIM from any country (except for corner cases, like very obsolete SIMs that apparently used an older version of GSM standards), but every time you insert a different SIM card into an unlocked French iPhone, you must Restore the phone through iTunes before it will begin to function correctly.

If Apple would allow office suites to work on the iPhone, I imagine that iWork apps would be among the first available for the iPhone. And if there was a way to hook up the iPhone to an LCD projector for keynote presentations from the iPhone.... ooooohhh.

there is a primitive way of doing this. By exporting your presentation as a quicktime movie or a photo album. Then transferring to iPhone. Works Ok, but works.

Man some of you guys have real paranoia issues.

iWorks for the iPhone... why? It's not a major player in the corporate world.
Great for college students.

Apple wants the enterprise/corporate world to buy the phone and use it as a replacement to Blackberry's.
It's about Apple making crap loads of $$$.

MS Office support IS what needs to be implemented in some fashion.
They already have Exchange/Outlook support... it's only a matter of time for true MS Office support.

Competition is good for the consumer. The better Windows gets, the better OS X has to get to compete and vice versa - the same with the Zune vs iPod, Office vs iWork. It will also be the same if Microsoft release a phone to compete with the iPhone.

Why do so many people get so upset at the thought of other companies being influenced by Apple products and in some cases copying them. That's something for Mr Jobs to worry about, not Joe Public.

I've read it several times. In fact, I just re-read it just in case I missed something. I still don't see it. Exactly which clause has the effect of treating Microsoft any differently from any other company that wants to develop software for the iPhone?

I think this is correct for restoring it. I also thought it had to do with the IMEI number.

I wouldn't call it paranoia issues. I would call it "being one of those college students and realizing there are a lot of us (and even intending on never having a corporate job and being forced to use Windows). I have no problem with MS Office coming to the iPhone. I just don't like it, so I won't use it. I happen to prefer iWorks, because it's more usable, faster, and--other than Numbers--offers just as much and sometimes more functionality.

Apple is also trying to break into the schools with the iPhone. iWorks for OS X Touch would be great for that. And being able to print from an iPhone? Amaaazing.

Other ways to go...

We probably shouldn't expect anything quickly from Microsoft either. They were one of the last to go UB- they were quite hampered with rewriting their software for the Mac intel platform. Now they are going to write for an entirely new platform? This may take a while, even if they could get apple to agree to let file access/storage work on the iphone. I'm pretty skeptical.
The MS offerings might not be totally localized MS Office, rather apps from the Live stable customized for iPhone with file storage on Sky Drive.

In that case, no super-preferential treatment would be required.

Or possibly, "iPhone Bob".......

Microsoft doesn't need a complex file system (certainly nothing like the jailbreaks). Rather it will probably be treated like Notes. iPhone users don't have access to the actual notes file, but it shows in the list of notes.

So when you tap open, then it shows a list. Now that would mean that it'd be useful if you could download .doc from the mail app and it would append to that list.

As for computer sync...maybe there will be a small software that Microsoft will write that extracts the documents (kinda like the software that saves the notes or sms...=/)

Bring it all on.

I say bring it all on. The more apps available the better. Since Apple will manage the distribution and quality ( I hope ), MS can make as many apps they want for it.

Nothing wrong...

with having a doubting eye towards MS. I use office (like most people probably) and have other MS products. But, that doesn't change the fact that they are a competitor to AI. It is wise (in all regards of life) to be careful of all competitors.

...friends close, enemies closer...that sort of thing

this is good, but i'll be honest i've never really trusted msoft. whenever i see them doing anything for apple i can't help but be reminded nixon's visit to china way back when, or, for a more contemporary analogy, gollum from LOTR.

thats the way man.. thats the way...
exactly what i wanted.. though you could convert keynote presentations to quicktime and use the iphone to deliver the video.. but it's not the same.!!:p

m one o them too. and it's iWork. and bluetooth should be able to handle the printing.

My worries exactly! Just omit these five words from this quote and...

""It’s really important for us to understand what we can bring to the iPhone," Tom Gibbons, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Specialized Devices and Applications Group, told Fortune on Monday."

...so you can soon see a Zune phone version in a candy bar design, color combo possibly silver and black, with a "home button", touchscreen, IE8, MS MarketPlace for downloadable music and third party apps, etc.

I just see that coming down the pike for some reason...

oww.. let them do it.. judging what they mad of vista keeping tiger in mind.. theyll make sweet sauce of the zune as well.lol.
also, by the time they would get something out like a beta or something, we would be on to iPhone 5.0 or something. and that would kik ass.lol.

Damn I think you guys could be right. I'm getting scared now Microsoft is going to do this:eek: it be better if they don't give code that Microsoft could abuse, or just develop iWork, Pages and Numbers and be done for it.

AMEN. Screw Microsoft, this would be a great opportunity to get iWork to the masses and more switchers. BOOOO Office, YAAAAYYY iWork :)

... if there was a way to hook up the iPhone to an LCD projector for keynote presentations from the iPhone.... ooooohhh.
This is already possible with a simple cable and about five minutes work. Save the presentation as a quicktime with chapter stops and export to iTunes. Sync the iPhone. Voila.

If you use a cradle for the iPhone, you can even use the Apple Remote.
