competition is good but only when the companies competing are forever playing cat and mouse with innovation. This isn't happening. What has Microsoft brought to the board that hasn’t been done yet?

I predict the Microcrap Zune Touch hype to die within a month of its release.

Why is hype so important to you? I see lot's of negative feedback on this product. I do like apple products and I must say this is the nicest zune I've seen yet. Who cares if its Microsoft, Apple so what! I smell a contender, and great for competition. Looks kinda neat too. The screws remind me of the earlier palms.

The past gives a glimpse of the future. Truly this looks like repeat "not ready for prime-time" effort on the Zune division's part. Just look at the mistakes in the PR picture. The PR picture! Then look at the design. It would have been cool looking if it were still 2004; the edge back is anti- ergonomic and the screws showing is a design faux pas for an "upscale" device. Then you get to the guts & see the screen resolution doesn't improve on the current iPod Touch...and we've yet to see what the next Touch will deliver, which will be what the Zune HD is really competing against.

Now maybe there is some goodness inside, obviously no one can say since no one outside of M$ has tested it. But from what we know I'd say I'm not expecting too much, and not just because it's M$, but because M$ just isn't putting its heart into the Zune project. It is, and always has been, a "me too" device. It may have more features than the iPods, but it lacks in design, interface, and connectivity polish.

Plenty of people will buy Zune HDs, but for the wrong reason. They won't buy it because it is the best media player on the market but rather because it's not Apple. The ironic thing is that both M$ and Apple are multi-billion dollar Goliaths in their own right, who, if they could, would corner the market and squeeze the consumer any way possible if they had the opportunity. Actually M$ did and nearly got away with it.

First of all how ergonomic do you consider an iPhone/iPod touch. That slight curve on the back is hardly something to consider ergonomic, and when I hold it my grip rests on the edges of the device. That aside I think it looks pretty cool. Its something different and refreshing. I am getting bored with Apple's design decisions.

It lacks design to you, the interface could be ok, we don't know yet, and this could really have some amazing connectivity with the xbox. Sure my iPod can sync with my mac, but beyond that I don't really connect it to anything. iTunes is huge, yes, but the XBLM does quite well. And if the Zune HD opens it up to be more diverse, this device could sell for a lot better reasons other than its not an apple product.

Horrible aren't they, wonder why they're so exposed like that?

Firstly, the HD doesn't mean high definition. It's just a gimmick.

Second, MS doesn't know how to design, whether hardware or interfaces.

ZuneHD = about 2 years too late. Been there/done that with Apple already.

I really appreciate that the only reason why this is dumb (note that no one here has touched or even seen the thing IRL) is because it's ugly* and because of the weak software**

*bull, It's a similar design to what Apple's been doing.

**which, again, no one here has any information on.

Tell me again what makes an iPod touch so much better? The App Store? Do you all not remember that the first generation iPod didn't have an app store? Yet, I'm sure all of you would be attacking this Zune even if it were out before the iPod touch.
Yes well it did come out 2 years late so they can attack all they want, and screw competition, if they wanted to compete they would have brought it out before Apple brought out the ipod touch, but no they bring it out 2 years later, and they are competiting, lol.

How ironic, if it had a 480x320 screen like the iPod touch (instead of 480x272) you'd be able to see the whole "marketplace" instead of having the "e" chopped off...
Hehehehe, what a joke and they have the same pic on the official site..:D

It means changing the battery will be easier. The ability to play HD movies back to a TV through a dock blows away the iPod Touch's current capabilities. Apple doesn't seem to want you to be able to do too much with their devices, at least until competition of some kind FORCES them to do it. So either way, this is GOOD for us the consumer. I cannot fathom why anyone would vote negative about this thread except for Apple fanatics that want Apple to rule the world. Otherwise, competition is always GOOD for the consumer because it means better products and lower prices. But I don't think too many Apple fanatics care about such things. Apple seems to be more of a religion for them than a company selling electronics and operating systems.

Now if only someone could force Apple to add more features to AppleTV....
Maybe they voted negative because they don't like the product, lol.

When we are talking about competition, we mean functionality... Not money.

Example: a good Zune HD with new hardware and software will force Apple to be at the top of their game and vice versa. If there is no competition than there is no reason to introduce new features as people will be forced to use that product anyway.

That is nonsense, what has Microsoft in 2 going to 3 years of bringing out the Zune done for ipod users, it has done nothing. Screw competition, they haven't brought out any features that Apple has actually used in their products, competition indeed.

Apple has a huge market share % in the MP3 market. They are the dominating force. They could be called a "monopoly" but I doubt anything is going to be done about it.

The difference is there so much other companies making mp3 players. How many other companies make operating systems. The only competitor Windows has is OSX, Linux is irrelevant.

Okay. Fine. If Zune can't use Multi-Touch (because Apple thought of it first), then iPod/iPhone can't use OLED because (because Microsoft thought of it first).

Not directed to you, but it's amazing how hypocritical some of you fanboys can be. It's so-so okay when the competition does something first (OLED, FM), but you guys scream bloody murder "epic fail" when Apple does it first and others follow. Nice... nice. :p

Microsoft isn't the first to use OLED and the product isn't even out yet, lol.

Okay, what about Apple's monopoly on OSX. It can only run (mostly) on Apple's own hardware. That's even more of an obvious monopoly tactic than Microsoft's with Windows. (Even before that was controlled by the government.)

LOL at Apple having a monopoly on OSX.

The HD stands for the fact that you can display hi-def videos to an external HD tv..

Also, Apple was about 15 years late to the cell phone market, and it worked out well, no?

Well, Apple was 15 years too late with a cell phone. I wouldn't underestimate Microsoft. It wasn't an accident that they are where they are, no different than apple.

It obviously was intentional. It's called style. If apple introduced screws as an accent then all of a sudden it would be considered "cool."

Because Apple's implementation would look good. Where as Microsoft's looks ugly. My opinion of course.

But that's Apple. Expect Apple to impress. Apple's vapourware today, is the competition's example tomorrow.

Apple and MS are completely different in the way they do things, their philosophies about how the user should interact with software and hardware, and what "design" actually means.

Apple is in a completely different league. All the talent is in Cupertino.

This.

As Judge Alsop in the Psystar vs Apple case decided, Apple doesn't have a monopoly on MacOS X, because MacOS X doesn't define a market in which a company could have a monopoly. The relevant market would be operating systems, and Apple has less than 10 percent market share in that market. A company doesn't have a monopoly in its own products, and there is legal precedent after precedent for that.

Exactly, If someone claims that Apple has monopoly on Macs, then by that logic Dell has monopoly on Latitudes. Lenovo has monopoly on Thinkpads....

By not doing that, but something new, you know...innovate?

By that logic we should not have iPod touch, since there already were large-screen media-players before it. Are you really that dumb that you think that there should only be one company making one type of device? Should we all be using Creative mp3-players, since they existed before iPod existed? Why don't we whine about "Apple is just copying Creative!" when they introduced the iPod?

Apple pioneered that design and a company as large as MS could afford to make a fresh product and not just a cold pasta product.

How exactly did Apple "pioneer" that design? And what would "that design" be? A mobile mediaplayer with a large screen? Products that fit that category were available from other manufacturers long before iPod touch existed. Why aren't you whining about Apple's lack of innovation?

Should MS make mobile mediaplayer with a small screen, just so you would be happy?

I would understand if the Zune was an obvious knock-off of the iPod. But it isn't. Place them next to each other, and the differences in appearance and design are obvious.

By your logic we could claim that Thinkpad is a copy of MacBook, since they both have similar trackpad-keyboard-screen-configuration.... Yet anyone with a functional brain would understand that they are independent design that look very different. It's just that there aren't that many ways you could biuld a notebook. Just like there aren't that many different ways to biuld a device that is pocketable and that has a large screen.

yeah oh how stylish screws are... It's unbeliavable the amount of trite we are going to hear in favour of ms. When did we apple folk call screws stylish? For crying out loud....

I think the screws are there cause it's another screw it ms junk.

That is nonsense, what has Microsoft in 2 going to 3 years of bringing out the Zune done for ipod users, it has done nothing. Screw competition, they haven't brought out any features that Apple has actually used in their products, competition indeed.

I'm describing the principle, not what any company actually did. It's not nonsense, it's a basic principle of economics and competition. And even though MS does not seem to do innovation consider the following:
  • Blue Track mice (innovation on laser mice)
  • ergonomical keyboards
  • Windows media player (was here years before iTunes)

This list is not complete, but to say that MS is only copying is nonsense. They do not introduce entire new concepts or new products types. But neither does Apple: Laptops, Desktops, Smartphones and MP3 players were here all before Apple started making them. Apple is just great at improving , designing and innovating existing concepts. MS is poor at this (IMO)...

It's been said before but it can't be said enough:

Who would buy from people who on their official product ad copy they have an "e" chopped off from their much touted "marketplac (sic)" feature.

How can you not call these people complete and utter MORONS?

If you bozos you messed up and can't display the e in the display at least artificially shrink the fonts in the ad for the word marketplace so it will fit on the screen intead of looking like the fools you are.

How Hard Is That?

But these guys are completely and irreversibly INEPT!!!!

Screws are good! Ever try to take apart a 3G nano...

I agree with Linx. The screws don't look bad IN THE PICTURE and it probably makes it a lot easier to open and hack.

But of course, everyone's making their opinions based on a single set of pictures. Have any of you actually touched it? Played with it?

That little fat iPod nano looked horrendous in pictures compared to this new Zune but it verged on being cute in person. However in person it didn't look as good or svelte as the pictures of this new Zune.

PS - I've never owned a Zune or an iPod. iPods are just way too expensive for what they offer.

I do love my non-jailbroken iPhone though - when it's not crashing or slowing down or choking on an update or ...

Really. A "blind case study" was done to see what if 5 year olds made contrast art and also added art from big names to see of people could tell the difference. Turned out the art that was designed by the 5 year olds were more desired.

In reality because it says "Microsoft" then people here say that's ugly. But if Apple designed it people would say looks awesome. I like that the aluminum is back over the plastic back. The screws were a nice accenting touch. Ohhhh the attention to detail as the fan boys would claim as they touch themselves.

Really..... Not very much constructive criticism here at this forum. Just bias opinion. I guess that's why it's called "Mac"Rumors. Comical really.

I completely agree. I'm not a big fan of MS but come on people, please try and look a little bit outside of that Apple box you've been locked into.
