Unix had it first, technically Mac OS X is Unix based so..

Technically, neither Unix or Linux have any desktop. Open source community provides that. "X Windows" was, from what I know, the first GUI for Unix/Linux. KDE and Gnome for Linux were the first desktop managers I used that supported multiple desktops, well before OSX. Maybe Sun Solaris (whatever manager that was) had it prior to those.

I'm a computer guy--I fix and troubleshoot PCs & Macs for people/businesses. I use, daily, both Windows and OSX. My Desktop is Windows 8.1 and my laptop is an 11" Air running Yosemite. I personally can't wait to try it since 8.1 is truly irritating without the start menu... I use Start8 for that reason. And I just like to try new stuff (Why I am in the computer support business--always changing so I have new stuff to learn) And it gets me ready for support questions and recommendations for my customers. I've got a 128GB SSD ready to go for the TechPreview.

Also, to the person who keeps posting that there will be a 9 for free and 10 is paid... I don't think so. The articles I've read say 10 will be a free upgrade to current Win 8.1 users and paid otherwise. No Windows 9. Though maybe I missed something. If so, please post the link. thnx

Is it just me or is everyone else imagining a toothbrush moustache in every scene of this video as well ?

So nothing. Linux is Unix based, and was released in 1991. Mac OS X was first released in 1999. Your point would have held up, if you had done a tiny bit of research :)

(Not being supercillious, just accurate - no offence).

So they copied Spaces and Exposé (or, now called Mission Control), merged Metro and the Start bar and released it as a new OS.

Makes me wonder if this is going to be a free upgrade (doubt it) or if 10 is to 8 as 7 was to Vista.

Apps that run in a window. Apps from the Windows Store now open in the same format that desktop programs do. They can be resized and moved around, and have title bars at the top allowing users to maximize, minimize and close with a click.
They list this as a new feature. Only from Microsoft! Also, does anyone know why they are skipping 9?

Multiple desktops... like... the feature Mac OSX has had for years? And all of the great new improvements are just normal old features they brought back. Fullscreen apps open the same way desktop apps do? Woah. Revolutionary.

How do PC users not recognize how far ahead of windows OSX is?

Well, you know, most of the planet's computer using population don't sit on forums, picking apart every minute detail of software platforms - they just USE them, which is kinda the point, really.

Seems like they're taking back a lot of Windows 8 design choices.

But it does look nice. Just because I prefer Mac doesn't mean I don't like Windows.

Trying too hard to be Mac OS X.

^ Trying (way) too hard to run away from assosciations with computing platforms, which really don't matter in one's life, overall.

Polite rationale? GET OUT! :D :p

Good comment. The best I've seen yet.

Regardless of the Xbox Microsoft is a software company. That's how they make money.

If Apple were a software company I'm guessing 10.10 would cost $129

It just occurred to me that the idea behind skipping to 10 is because they're copying Apple (who has been on version 10 for the past 14 years now).

Yeah, but at least Apple went to 9 first. They did it very hastily, but they did it. Not that it matters really.

7 pages of mostly idiotic responses and the same joke over and over again and no one (at least that I saw) mentions the fact that this OS will be multi platform?

Windows 10 is it... no more Windows Phone, no more confusion between touch and type, no more apps just for desktop or apps just for tablets or apps just for phones.

Say what you will, but they are cleaning up the issues people complained about and at the same time making it the easiest OS for developers who will be able to create a single app that works across ALL Windows devices.

That's pretty revolutionary in my book.

Seems likes its essentially Win 7 + Win 8 UI + Expose from OS X bolted on. Then scaled across all devices

That's pretty revolutionary in my book.

Cleaning up your own mess is not a revolution. Its just being sanitary.

being someone that was massively frustrated with the little time i spent on w8 isnt the reason that is listed as a feature the complaints the previous implementation must have gotten?

but their interest and requests for customer feedback is a nice touch imo.

Within a few week of this being released, Windows 10 will have more users than OSX.

Apple would love to be in this position.

I'd like Apple to be in this position but windows is still alive and isn't going anywhere - no matter how many people on these forums predict the demise of Microsoft!

The good thing about Microsoft is that they're willing to take huge risks and when they fail, they're willing to change their minds and go backward in order to move forward.

Metro is an interesting flat design and it can be used as Microsoft's new UI guideline for desktop apps, now that it no longer mandated to be a full screen app.

Windows 8.1, in my opinion based on using OS X and Windows daily, is a much better OS at resources and responsiveness than OS X, but it is not entirely usable with its Metro design and so on. OS X is still better but if Microsoft does this right with the new direction for Metro on Windows 10, OS X might lose that battle and W10 could become the better overall OS. With that in mind, MS has said a lot of things and failed, so we just have to wait until the final release of W10 to see.

I can definitely say I'm not happy with what Apple is doing with Yosemite, the lightweight/responsiveness feeling is completely gone, it's not responsive as my favorite SL, and it is just eating up too much resources for no reasons.

Haven't we risen above "X copied Y - Y had it firrrrrsssstt" in the context of it being a BAD thing, and pathetic comparisons with negative connotations? Seems not.

Come on folks, wise up and enjoy life.
