Wow, that is kinda nice. That's the future of the laptop right there...well, someone's idea of the future of the laptop.

I agree-- good for them for identifying their own market segment to target, and not just following Apple. For the eye-rollers-- do you actually prefer Samsung's approach to Microsoft's?

...snip...
The entry-level $799 Surface Pro 3 model carries a Core i3 processor with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, with Core i5 models priced at $999 (128 GB storage, 4 GB RAM) and $1299 (256 GB storage, 8 GB RAM). High-end Core i7 models with 8 GB of RAM will be available for $1549 (256 GB storage) and $1949 (512 GB storage). Battery life is pegged at up to nine hours of web browsing.

..snip..

no thanks, I'll take this instead. Plus, it runs my OS of choice ;)

The price is pretty close to the $899 for a macbook air... And I can't wait for all the ads on tv that end like this "I want to be free!!!!!!!!!"

Why does everyone keep saying "Compared to what?" Compared to a MBA of course. For $30 cheaper you get an 11" MBA with the same battery life, an i5 processor and twice the storage running OSX. Sure you lose out on 1" of display and it is marginally heavier. Compared to that, it is expensive.

Compared to a 64 GB iPad where you actually get most of the 64GB, it is maybe a wash. Window washing... I don't know, see what you can do with that.

So you're saying it isn't a heavy monstrosity?

Also, why compare it to an iPad?

Actually I quite like this and given that they'll fail as with the previous two versions I'll be able to pick up a nice piece of technology for next to nothing on eBay in 12 months time.

Compared to what? This is effectively a Macbook Air with a detachable keyboard, spec wise.

I think he refers to when compared to a windows computer of similar specs.

I personally am curious about the graphics and other tech specs of this tablet. If it is able to smoothly run solidworks, I may be interested.

I still don't see how this is a compelling tablet. It's not something I'd want to curl up on the couch with and read a book on. It's not something I'd easily slip into my purse or backpack if I was going out somewhere. It may be a really nice laptop (and it seems Microsoft is going after the MBA) but I don't see it as a tablet. I mean look at all Microsoft press shots....they show it with the kickstand out and the keyboard cover attached. I see this as Microsoft's version of a laptop with touchscreen. And I see it mostly taking share from other Windows OEMs.

Too bad it's a top heavy monstrosity. Too bad it runs Windows. Too bad it's too expensive.

Too bad it's a full blown computer with a real desktop operating system meant to replace laptops. What are you comparing to; a blown up iPhone?

How many failed attempts and millions (maybe billions) of dollars can Microsoft afford to do? OH wait, this is Microsoft. The 90% Marketshare and Business Choice for the world. I guess if this fails maybe the 4th, 5th, 6th may catch on and finally dominate the market.

You are so wrong, they are making a demo device to show off Windows 8 to the public and manufacturers, and considering the massive worldwide domination market share Windows has I can see why they have done this, just like what Google has done with the Nexus range.

It's thinner and lighter than a MBA, the lightest and thinnest of the MacBook line. It's slightly more expensive, sure, you have me there.

What is the weight difference between the two when the type cover is attached to Surface?

I'm interested in the i7 model with 8-gig of RAM and 512 GB SSD. Will wait for a 80% off fire sale.:D

It's neat, but...

Still my problem with the Surface is that Windows takes up more space than OS X.

SP3 i5 for $999 (128 GB storage, 4 GB RAM), plus $130 Type Cover and $200 docking station for Ethernet, Mini DisplayPort, USB, and audio. Mind you, only ~97GB would be available for use if it's like the SP2.

Or, 13in MBA for $999 with $20 adapter for ethernet, and the rest listed above already built in, and Mavericks takes up roughly half, if not less, of that space that Win8 does.

Almost can replace a Laptop

Laplet, I may call it and this convergence devices are going to compete against each other. iPad Air Pro, Note Pro, Surface Pro 3. I feel at this point, Surface Pro 3 seems to be the best in the competition.

MacBook AIR though is a good option, its screen resolution is not great and it is not a touch screen. Both of them are reasonably good for documentation, emails, low end imaging...can address most of the Enterprise community who are in the verge of transforming into BYOD segment.

I still feel LTE or Mobile connectivity (like Samsung Note Pro) which I find it very useful in my Note Pro where I can use my 3G Connection whenever I go out of my WiFi Range.

The battle lines are drawn and it seems 12 inch Laplet Pro are going to fight with each other head-on.

Just a shame it's so expensive particularly for the high end models, you could have a Macbook Air and iPad mini for the same price and not have to compromise at all.

If anyone thought that Microsoft would give up, you can forget about that. They were late to the game as usual, but they know their future is somewhere in the neighborhood of tablets, and this product makes it clear they will continue to try to find a sweet spot between the iPad and a laptop. Who's to say they haven't found it?
