One thing that interests me, have they actually got deals with Visa/Mastercard/The banks for the credit card feature, or is it a theoretical use in 5 years, personally I'd be inclined to go with the latter, and I suspect that could apply to many of the other uses too.

I'm wondering the same. How much post-production work was actually done on the posted clips?

I saw this on youtube like half a year ago and I posted it here to see if anyone thought this is what leopard was and what do you know? Microsoft releases it.

OS->Touch or Touch->OS?

A question:

With the rise of muli-touch in the not-too-distant future, do you think we'll see the current market OSs (OSX, Vista etc.) adapted to run on 'Surface'-style techonlogy, or do you think we'll see a brand new design of OS built grounds-up for a multi-touch input device?

I for one can't see the current file structure and hierarchy continuing into this era, for example.

All very exciting, though, isn't it? :)

MA.

Why so negative?

I don't have time to read this whole thread but the few pages I waded through are so incredibly negative. Is this old technology? Sure I've seen the iPhone demo too and the video of the touchscreens before but this is something coming to market and that's significant.

$5000 - $10000, hmmm, I paid €4500ish for my Mac Pro and although it is one hell of a computer it's not leading-edge like this.

Good luck to MS (this time)

Good for Mac users who want a tablet.

Apple keeps putting off giving us a tablet. This will force them to do so, and soon.

Am I the only one that thinks that the restauraunt "Menu" has the most dock-like interface EVER?

But if i have 2gb photo-camera, full of photographs, so do I have to put them one by one to my computer? that would make no sense.. But I didnt saw other option. "You take photo, drag it whatever you want.."

I like the idea of wireless-visual transferring.. I have seen it somewhere.. But i wouldn't like having table running windows..

p.s: how you could press ctrl-alt-del? knees - elbow - middle finger? :D

Not neccessary. It's simply cash register software. Visa isn't splitting up the bill, it's being done beforehand and then, assuming it all adds up right, it charges the 4 cards. Yes, of course you'd need a merchant acct to charge credit cards, but nothing special.

I think the question is how does it recognize the cards. There has to be something in them which makes the sytem recognize them.

Probably in a real life system you'd swipe the card first and then throw it on the table and the "swipe" will register with your card.

Wow, MR... You guys are ridiculous. Stop your whining! Sure, this may not be 'new' technology per se, but have we seen it employed in any product thus far? No. The iPhone may allow you to drag a couple fingers across a map, but in an actuality, this is the first device to utilize the tech shown by Hahn.

Quityerbitchin, this does nothing but put more pressure on companies to incorporate it into home tech. I'll go as far as to say THANK YOU Microsoft.:)

These Fanbots are disgusting. I thought this type of behavior was only for the pre-pubescent teenage boys at the Xbox and PS3 sites. I guess I was wrong. It's quite sad to see some people and their rabid, blind eyed induced tirades. :(

Is it really hard to say "Wow, MS created something cool as all hell. Good job! Hopefully other companies will run with this also?"

Given a choice, I would MUCH rather have this than an iPhone if moolah wasn't and issue! Definitely has a greater WOW factor. It's not even close.

Fanbots are sad, on either side of the fence.....:apple:

But you are paying without putting the chip (on the card) in a reader, otherwise it's a bit crap to split the bill with this cool device and still have to put the card in a machine.

Also there is the security issue of wireless card access as well as the power constraints, if you can do it on this table someone bumping into you on the tube could do the same.

I dont think so. Look! They could make something like NINTENDO DS. Thats way nicer than tablet pc and way more useful, imo..

And one more thigh.
I would like to ask. If Apple have so much patents on Apple iPhone interface and iPhone itself, so way can other companies copy it so obvious, like this?

The table appeals to people who need to be entertained. Folks who think they'd enjoy digital finger-painting exercises or moving something made of pretty colors around on a surface. A shiny new toy that helps a person waste time, in other words.

For most anyone who actually creates, its usefulness is limited. Hands and fingers aren't precise. Try playing Flight of the Bumblebee on a Theremin and you'll begin to understand the limitations of this sort of interface.

I was wondering whether anyone thinks Steve Jobs might push forward an apple announcement to today seeing as Bill Gates will clearly use this as an 'argument winner' with his interview with Steve Jobs tonight???
Perhaps a new feature of Leopard, or will Steve simply imply a new product at WWDC?
Personally I don't think he will be that bothered seeing as it is not a ready-to-buy option, but who knows?

I'm a big Mac fan... but I'm just glad that technology has finally reached this height... just imagine what this would turn out to be in another 2-5 years... no matter who comes up with it, others will catch on. Some will do better than others... I'm really rooting for :apple: to bring more of this to our homes. It's just a fantastic technology, all in all. :)

Ive seen somthing like it *coughs*iPhone*cough*

And theres also that one multitouch video that everybodys already seen,

And then you can argue that the iPhone isn't innovative either... and that Microsoft copied Apple with Vista (which is so true, it reeks of macness:D), it's just how it works.

Plus, to be honest, can you really compare the iPhone to the surface? They're different aspects. They do different things. But technological advancement is always going to have to go through imitation to progress. In that logic I could accuse the iPhone of copying tablet PCs, which isn't fair to say.

Just imagine...

Our everday desks could be one giant touch screen, interactive device!

And why not stop there, our walls too. Floors, ceilings, chairs, doors, toilet seats & bowls, sinks, baths, beds!!!! We can live in a world where we can 'touch' everything! :p

Ok - well it was a good demo but I just have a 'wait till I see it' stance.

Right now it's just a table you look down upon. Instead of carpal tunnel disease, there will be an epidemic of people with cricks in their neck. I think I'll go into chiropractic therapy to get rich thinks MS:D

i can see its pros and cons but Microsoft ripped that rock's image off OSX its one of the background desktop pictures wth

Christ, give it up. That can be said for ANY form of entertainment device, like the iPod video or :apple:TV.....

If, and when, this becomes attainable for consumer purchase it will be a great home device, whether it was made by MS or not. Kids will eat it up. The paint program that was displayed is amazing for younger kids.

If this was an Apple device, you along with the other robots, would be praising this as the 2nd coming of Christ. It's not by Apple, but MS, so you're pre-programmed to hate.

Yes, because it's not possible that it's stock art or anything LICENSED by Apple.....

What are you going to "create" on an iPhone? A new contact entry?
