Strong

Strong and simple ads. Should drive the Surface sales into the tens of thousands per quarter.

Seriously, there are some valid points here. And McSft needs this device to be relevant. Their Windows phone certainly isn't going to get relevance in the US anytime soon. And we are heading toward a post-PC world. The Metro interface might actually make sense on a Surface. The problem is that it doesn't make sense on a desktop. So we have another McSft OS that many people hate. I know I'm one of them every time I am jarringly taken into the Metro set up on my dual screens at the office.

Macbook air has a multitouch trackpad and is way better than a touchscreen on a display :)

Hilarious. They're comparing one of the best notebook computers ever engineered to a misunderstanding of both the notebook and tablet. That machine manages to be both a piece of junk of a notebook and a piece of junk of a tablet. Only Microsoft could find the middle ground of junk. I think Apple should drop their search stuff if they don't stop this silliness.

As an apple fanboy I say, well done ms. These ads are actually really good for a change! I can imagine if most consumers saw these ads at first glance, they'll be asking "well why the hell would I get a MacBook? Comparitively, it's so limited for the same price!"

It was smart of ms to instead of targeting the iPad, to go after the laptop with the "the tablet that can replace your laptop" campaign. I'm excited to see where this is going. Although I'm not a fan of ms, the ui or the entire Os, it looks like they're making steps in the right direction

Indeed. Putting all your eggs in one basket is risky. What if you leave your single device lying on the couch and someone sits on it? Or if someone steals it? You just killed your 'work' life and your personal life.

I prefer separate devices - each of which can be exposed to appropriate levels of risk.

So you carry a mobile phone, a PDA, and a camera around with you all the time do you?

This is very confusing. Microsoft seems to mix up goal and method. Your goal is to write, edit, view, produce, … and your input methods to achieve those goals are keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, … So while they want to claim that you cannot achieve certain goals with the Macbook Air, they show you that it does not support some input methods. So their conclusion is wrong.

Additionally, they do not give specific use cases why it would be more productive to work with those missing input methods (especially the touch screen) in this setup. It seems they just added touch because it’s cool, not because it’s useful on a laptop. If touch was useful on a laptop, Apple would have added it 5 years ago.

And man: is that thing ugly. They show a beautiful Macbook Air and next to it a cheap looking toy.

too bad it runs Windows.

Hope it'll receive a decent OSx86 port. Then, I'll immediately purchase it - I've long been wanting a non-widescreen, high-res, high-spec Wacom / N-Trig tablet with both Windows and OS X support. Too bad Apple have been refusing to come up with one.

Lolz. You certainly don't have a clue.

I wish people here would be honest.

If the Surface pro was built by Apple, and had a touch enabled version of OSX you'd be all over it, saying how amazing it is to have one device.

I know some here are honest enough to actually admit they like the idea and if it was OSX they'd want one.

I suppose we shall just have to wait for Apple to make one, which they will, and then be told then how amazing it is.

Noone forces you to use the touchscreen. You can even disable it entirely.

I, who frequently need pen support, would certainly put up with plain pen (read: no touch) support. After all, my venerable HP TC1100, purchased 11 years ago, had no touch - "only" Wacom. And it's also because the Wacom / N-Trig support that these tablets are far more versatile than traditional computers with touchpads / mice only. Good luck using the latter with your Mac when, say, drawing maps or hand drawing :)

Well said Sir. You totally understand it perfectly. It's the same deal in the phone industry. Trying to do multiple things in the same device means you compromise so you do neither well. It's better to do one thing well then two things average at best or poorly.

Indeed.

The iPhone is a poor Camera, it's a poor music player due to poor speakers, it's a poor web browser due to it's small screen, it's got a poor 1 day batter life.

No one would want to by an iPhone that's so compromised putting poor user experiences into one device, when separate devices can do these tasks so much better.

Oh hang on...........................

Basically the surface is more expensive, have a smaller screen, no real hinge, small trackpad, slower, less battery life, and runs Windows. What's not to love?

True, I do have a Surface Pro, too. It feels a little awkward to work with, wherever you try it. The screen is too small, the keybaord feels like it's scratching the screen (or you'r 'folding' it unintentionally :) ), without hinge you can't have the screen in the right position... etc.
And of course using traditional Windows software with the small rocky touchpad and small screen is a PITA...

Where did I say that?

You said you prefer separate devices.

No not one item that is a mobile phone, a Personal Organizer and a camera in one device that can get lost as you said.

Best not to have all your eggs in one basket, the one device, iPhone gets lost and you are without everything.

It appears Surface Pro is having schizophrenia. On one hand they market it as a tablet, on the other they market it as a tablet that can be a notebook.

That being said, I still want a Surface Pro as a tablet... because the writing experience on iPad is definitely subpar.

The Surface Pro 3 made me switch away from OS X. As a developer, who does a variety of stuff - web development, app development, etc. It really is the perfect sort of machine. And I love writing on the screen, it is brilliant.

But, for most folks the Macbook Air is a wonderful tool as well - I used one for the last 3.5 years.

But I've been using Visual Studio more and more (and after using XCode for the last few years, wow - what a breath of fresh air to be back in a robust development environment), and a PC made more sense for my current needs.

I ended up falling in love with my SP3. I've got a ton of monitors plugged into it right now (3), and then I can unsnap it and take it to my bedroom to watch videos or read books, or browse the web.

It is not perfect. The touch interface on desktop windows is not as bad as I had feared, but it is not something Apple would EVER release into the wild to consumers.

It works great in Metro/Modern of course.

It has a niche that it is targeting I think. Engineers, Designers, Students, Artists who need to do very creative sort of work that requires pen, computing, etc. really dig it.

OneNote really is the "killer app" for this product. People who haven't mined the depths of what OneNote can do are really missing out.

I like mine. Best device I've purchased since ... my Macbook Air :)

I never mentioned separating out the components of a phone. This thread is about tablets and laptops. Focus please.

That said, I know people who carry two phones to keep their work and personal lives separate.

That's not really Apple bashing here, as you can see in Samsung ads. These ones are pretty well done, and quite cool :)

Can't you use a pen on the trackpad? Do they even know what a decent trackpad is?

These ads are so stupid and pathetic...

However, I can't wait for MS to bash the Air's screen as much as they can. That way maybe Apple gains the decency of improving things by a lot... 1920*1200 IPS panel at least.

Meanwhile Microsoft still loses a lot of money in Surface products. Let's see how much they are willing to bury.
