It appears that Microsoft wants you to buy a Surface Pro 3 instead of a 13" Macbook Air.

Why single-out the Macbook Air?

The top 5 PC vendors worldwide are:

Lenovo
HP
Dell
Acer
Asus

I would assume Apple is #6 on that list... but it seems weird that Microsoft is specifically targeting one particular Mac model.

Do people really cross-shop Mac laptops and PC laptop/tablet hybrids?

I thought people weren't into spending over $1000 for a Windows device.

Oh it's got a pen? Cool! :D

I think if you did an analysis "number of laptops sold that cost more than a Surface Pro 3", Apple would be clear leader. Someone who bought a $300 Asus laptop is unlikely to be willing to spend the money that a Surface Pro 3 costs.

I like the idea of an all-in-one. But it's running Windows. I'm never using that horrible system again.

Ultimately Windows is the OS of the Boomers and it will die off with them, leaving the world a better place regarding both aspects. Like the boomers it is irritating and full of it, yet due to a complete lack of ethics, got all the money.

I've seen people install OSX on their Surface Pros. Not sure what kind of experience they get since OSX isn't touch-enabled but no need to stick with Windows. Specs-wise, the Surface 3 Pro is fantastic.

Now THAT is interesting. I'll have to look into that.

That was five years ago, and some of those ads actually contained compliments for the PC! (Go back and watch them again).

I welcome Apple bashing in ads. It means they're perceived as a threat. And consumers see right through it. (Well, except the Samsung people. But I never harangue the mentally challenged.)
Those ads were really OS X vs Windows ads. As Apple Macs are PCs too. In saying that I agree those ads did compliment Windows at times.

Ignoring decades of UI / UX studies, Microsoft insists to place a touch screen in a upward screen configuration. The forearm gets fatigued after just a few minutes of regular upward touching actions. This is why you have a track pad and a UI pointer in an upward screen!

Cheap plastic keyboard, UI intended for large screen televisions and an accelerometer driven remote controls (tiles) and most of all -- SecureBoot keeping and end user to from loading Linux on this sans a soldering iron.

Fail!

What the hell is Microsoft talking about??? I mean, really?? Im on a Mid 2013 MacBook Air right now as I type this and I couldn't be more amazed! :):apple:

My whole issue with the Surface Pro 3 is it tries to cram two devices into one. It gets there in theory... with some caveats.

I've heard people say that two devices is a lot of hassle. I can sorta see the reasoning behind that... but...

What if one of those devices in a 15" Macbook Pro Retina... and the other is an iPad Mini?

One of those is a hell of a machine for work... while the other is perfectly suited for lounging on the couch. They both excel at what they're supposed to do.

And then there's the Surface Pro 3... which is a 12" laptop and a 12" tablet.

In my opinion... 12" is kinda small for a laptop... and rather large for a tablet. It seems you can't get the best of both worlds in one package.

Besides... I thought people were leaning more towards 8" tablets nowadays. When did Microsoft get the memo that 12" tablets were a thing? :)

Microsoft's slogan is: "a tablet that will replace you laptop"

They should change it to: "a laptop with an optional removable keyboard that will replace your laptop... and you're still gonna want an 8" tablet too"

:D

Well said Sir. You totally understand it perfectly. It's the same deal in the phone industry. Trying to do multiple things in the same device means you compromise so you do neither well. It's better to do one thing well then two things average at best or poorly.

I'd like to see Linux on this. How was SecureBoot broken? Link please!

Please explain how the iPhone was able to merge all of these into a very versatile platform.

I agree, it's like Microsoft subliminally is declaring the Macbook Air to be the golden standard of laptops, just like other companies still hold onto the iPhone or iPad when it's about comparing their products to display how good they are supposed to be. I think Apple can kind of live with this...

Indeed. Putting all your eggs in one basket is risky. What if you leave your single device lying on the couch and someone sits on it? Or if someone steals it? You just killed your 'work' life and your personal life.

I prefer separate devices - each of which can be exposed to appropriate levels of risk.

Windows hardware is far more superior than Apple, but the problem is Windows! it is not reliable, full of bugs, navigation sucks, viruses and so on.

I don't think it fully succeeded and it can't. It has only limited functionality in terms of email communication compared to a laptop or a tablet, and the same goes for internet browsing and productivity.

Sure the iPhone has excellent features to support each of these functionalities, but they are lacking in comparison to the products that are dedicated for that specific purpose. The same is true for any other product.

The issue here is that the surface indeed tries to be the best of everything, which is just impossible. The ridiculous OS with two user interface experiences is enough testament to that.

The best way to not promote your product is to bash the competition's even better product.

I have both and honestly Windows 8 is painful and confusing to use. Besides they completely change their interface every couple of years so its a real problem to learn all over again. I can get more things done in less time on a mac

Ouch ya I just looked at the pricing, investigating whether I might pick one up just to hackintosh it. I was thinking maybe it would be $599 or something. For the kind of price they are asking I'll just wait for the retina MBA.

They ARE good ads though. They do show that Apple is falling behind in yet another category.

All it needs now is a decent operation system.
Where to find one?
OSX is still mostly un-usable with touch screen.

The day that apple gets OSX to be touch screen compatible they will introduce the same machine as surface is now. It's just matter of time.
