So people will no longer spend $100 for software

But they'll fork out $50 for a smart cover, which is basically a piece of polyeurethane with a magnet.

Nice work Apple, convincing people that software is worthless while making it normal to buy $1000 hardware with a 50% profit margin

That's a $100 per year... whether they add anything new you particularly want or not. (And, obviously, once they have you hooked in a subscription, their incentive to invest in the product goes down quite a bit.)

Personally, I was happy to continue to occasionally purchase Office upgrades. But the Office 365 plan tripled my effective cost while reducing MS's incentive to keep impoving the product.

Dear Microshaft,

I will not rent software. I will purchase a license at a reasonable price, that I can use as long as I still have hardware to run it. Please forward this message to Adobe, as they are trying the same customer gouging scam.

Thanks,

Apple is happy today to see Office for the iPad:
  1. It confirms iPad's leading position in the Enterprise
  2. Apple gets 30% from every in-app purchase :)
  3. It confirms the iPad as a predominant client in the tablet space
  4. It is an admission of Microsoft's defeat in mobile. At least they decided to make lots of money out of it!

I signed up for a free month of 365 to play around with it. I copy/pasted a document I had in Pages and goofed around with it to see what all it could do.

So far, I kinda like it. In a kind of weird reversal of roles, I'm finding the UI in the MS program to be far better than the hidden behind pop-ups route Apple took with the new Pages. I didn't have any trouble finding what I needed, and slapping it in.

As for features, it isn't full on Office, but it's solid, and looks like it might have a leg up on Pages.

So is it good? Looks that way. Is it $100 a year good? That I don't know yet. I do already like it a little better than Pages, but not so much better than I became instantly willing to subscribe to 365 to get away from it.

I'm gonna be writing up a little picture filled tutorial here soon, and I'll run it through both to see how each turns out. The end results will be the deciding factor on which I keep.

Haha Typical Micro$oft.

Up to their old tricks again.

Money grabbing tw@s.

They tried it with the XBox One, with their overpricing, and attempt at stopping people from using second-hand games etc, and now they want to use this to try to extort money from the gullible.

Not a chance, M$, not a chance at all. This truly is the final straw for me. When the time comes to replace my PC, I'm going totally Apple. I will never, ever, EVER put another penny in Micro$oft's pockets.

I'm disappointed that it requires a subscription on the iPad. But did Microsoft really have a choice? If they sell it outright, then Apple gets a 30% cut. With the subscription model, Microsoft keeps more of the money. Doesn't matter to the end-customer though.

I may have to re-think my hesitance to pay for a subscription. If the $99/yr covers all of my desktop/notebook/tablet/smartphones in the house, it might be worth it.

Cook and Nadella love-in. :D

I got an Office 365 subscription for free through my (former) college and it looks like it's still active even though I'm no longer a student...? Not complaining. I'll see which platform I like more - iWork or Office.

Impressed with Excel for ipad so far, using it wi my existing O365 subscription. Will use it in anger over the next few days. Giving away Office for mobile I suspect is a 'hook' to get your docs & info into OneDrive and Office for iPad/mac/PC is more likely to follow.

Also very impressed with Sataya Nadalla and Julia White's presentation; informative, concise and I warmed to them both. Came across so much better than the previous CEO... Hopefully this is a sign of a less combatative, more humble Microsoft.

I can still see the appeal of a one time charge. From what I've seen of Word, I'd be willing to pay $50-$60 for each one, no problem. It's a great app, and it's obvious a lot of work went into it.

But with a subscription model, you don't get that feeling of ownership. It's one of those "in your head" things, I know. As far as pure usage goes, there isn't that much difference between owning a piece of software, and subscribing to it for roughly the same price. The added bonus of perpetual upgrades and tons of cloud space should make it an even sweeter deal than just buying it outright. But still, it's a mental barrier some people can't get past, and I can kinda understand why, if not necessarily agree with it 100%.

The negative is that you have to subscribe to 365. And that for me is a deal-breaker. I'm sure I'm not the only one who baulks at the idea of giving any more of my hard-earned cash to M$

365 is a good deal. You can install it on up to 5 of your computers as well.

It's a no brainer. I have a TechNet subscription, but when TechNet is retired later this year I'll have no hesitation in signing up.

Why is it free to use on Android but requires a subscription on istuff?

You just need to sign up with your hotmail account for 1 month free trail. It isn't that hard to find out right? right??????

And have to take the time to cancel the trial before it starts charging my credit card? Sorry, but I can't be bothered. I can't see why they don't just let it be downloaded as a free trial and ask for a code to continue after the introdutory period. Maybe the local Apple store will load it up on an iPad and I could try it there. They load MS Office onto some of their Macs for demo purposes so perhaps they will do the same with a few iPads.

I believe you can save your documents directly to the iPad if you want. The OneDrive thing is just for mass sharing.
