I wonder if Apple will get a 30% cut of the subscriptions or was Microsoft successful in getting an exception.

Is there IAP for the subscription model? If not then I'm assuming Apple wouldn't get a cut of anything?

For me, this would have to be accompanied by a usable on-device hierarchical file system, to make me interested in using this for content creation.

If I think how I use MS Office on my PC desktop, it involves a lot of file opening and closing, cutting and pasting, flexible editing, and fairly strict versioning of complex files that get edited repeatedly over time.

Without that sort of workflow ability, then for me this is no better than the many available document viewers and limited editors out there, or even Pages, which I know many people use quite satisfactorily.

Essential for me is a fully customisable file storage structure for my >5000 Word documents, etc.

Until that is available, this is of limited value to me personally, and I will continue to need my desktop PC and MS Office for Windows....
but I will watch developments closely!
That kind of workflow is never going to work on a tablet as it is based on a 1980s way of using computers. You should really be using something like Sharepoint to store all your files, which can then be accessed by MS Office on your PC/iPad.

But if you are happy with keeping with your current workflow, a standard PC is always going to be better.

Is there any information about other language support except english ? I can't find on microsoft website.

Really Microsoft? $9.99 a month?

No thanks, I'll stick with Pages for which I paid $9.99 one time.

I know Pages might not be as advanced but it does the job for me. I don't know about others.

How big are file apps for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint? I want to compare them to the monster size apps of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

And that's fine. Microsoft makes most of their money from enterprise anyway.

Did average consumers really pay for Office?

I can't imagine that moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas were really bothered by the Office 365 subscription.

You're right... corporate and enterprise will be buying Office... just like they always have.

It probably also means MS will help Apple sell more iPads than Surface.

Pretty much anyone who requires a subscription for software can kiss my patootie.

Yes, I just said patootie. :p

Why do some people worry about that so much? Why do you honestly care? At the end of the day it shouldn't matter to the consumer who gets paid what. Whatever money Apple makes from developers goes into making better products for their customers. Let it go.

I'm no fan of Office or Microsoft by any means, but there are too many clients using Office and Outlook to ignore them. Many of the "competitive" tools aren't very good either.

We'll see how this works out.

If Apple would wake up and release a fully functional suite of iWork apps then it's likely to be curtains for the Microsoft offering. Cumbersome clumsy and awkward. Come on Apple release Pages and Numbers with all the features you stripped out with release 2.1 .....

I'm not even curious enough to download these apps. I'm so happy with iWork and how it seamlessly syncs between my iPhone, iPad and Macbook Pro in real time. If MS can't offer a similar experience, how can they command such a premium? It was a huge mistake for MS to allow iPad users to find alternative solutions to Office.

These apps should have been released 3 years ago! Now...who gives a crap!

I'll wait for the Office 365 Personal subscription, $6.99 a month so roughly £4 a month here in the UK. The iWork apps are great, but Microsoft have done a great job with Office on iPad. Very nice UI, it comes off as more polished and "professional" than Apple's own Pages and Numbers.

My impression is that people are bashing this Office for iPad even before testing it, and just because they hate Microsoft. If you don't need and don't like Office, then don't use it.

But the fact is that there is little to hate in Office. Office for Windows is a very well-made piece of software. Office for Mac is not half as good, but still acceptable. But, as bad as it may be, people make it even worse because they are Apple fans and Microsoft haters. Come on.

Let's go to the real facts, people. What are the differences in features between this iPad Office and the Office 2013 for Windows? Is this a lesser Office or a full-featured one?

I was holding off on upgrading my iPad to see if they would require the 365 subscription. Since I can get Numbers, etc for free on a new ipad, I'll go that route. Congratulations Microsoft. You just helped me decide to buy a new iPad.

Hup

It needs 365, so I'm guessing it's not compatible with the Microsoft Home Use Program? :-(
