Uhh...

Then why did the buy a MBA in the first place? If they didn't need a full portable computer, then they shouldn't have bought one. Seriously, the comparison between a SP 3 and an iPad Air is a hilarious one that ends with the iPad looking bad.

Because they needed a cheap, full featured Mac to work on temp projects, then got a job.

The SP3 and the iPad Air aren't meant to be the exact same product.

You really think the SP3 is worth it at that price?

I'd go with the sharper screen, regardless of resolution, and I'm betting a lot of poor-eyesight-having people will do the same.

(Previous post edited) The sharper screen would certainly be the SP3. There are many reasons why I dislike the idea of actually using a SP, but the resolution is definitely not one of them.

Definitely not. Maybe if iPads didn't exist they'd be a bit more interesting to me, but as it is now it's not worth the extra cost (to me).

"that price"?

Could you be a little more specific?

Funny how the Microsofft Store in Valley Fair mall in San Jose is directly across from the Apple store with a big sign advertising this swap. I had a windows 8 computer for a year and dumped it for an MB Pro. Macs last longer and are cleaner machines. Not sure why someone would bother doing this. People generally switch from PC to Mac, and not the other way around.

What?

This trade offer is pathetic!!!

Not like I'm considering it... but I bought my Air for 1900... Even if I don't need it anymore, I can sell it on ebay for at least 1200.... WTF!!!

$799-1949, as per the article?

I remember hearing about when one apparently opened up across from an Apple store in the Mall of Americas; they definitely aren't very subtle about their approach.

Depends on the model.

Yes, I could see the i5 128gb model with a keyboard being worth 1130$. I don't know if I'd ever call the i3 a deal, but it isn't the worst possible thing. I think they should have made the low end i5 800$ and gone up from there. But that's me being greedy.

Good battery life, good screen, and a good OS.

This is how MS plans to make a profit. They will trade Surface 3 in for MacBook Air, get paid a little in cash right up front, and then they will ebay Airs and make a small profit. If you asked me, I would say this is a sound business plan for Surface 3.

This is so funny, because a lot of people think the best way to run Windows 8.x is in a VM, or with bootcamp for games, on a MacBook Air, not on a Surface.

A lot of people where? On this forum? On your Facebook friends list? I certainly don't know of anyone who would agree with what you say "many people" say.

Forum people here.

No idea where they got that idea.

Neither do I.

VM have poor performance and bootcamp relies on, well, bootcamp. Their drivers are normally behind, especially graphics. And it has a negative impact on startup times. The SP3 is something that's made to work with Windows like a MBA is made to work with OS X, and you're likely to get better software support for Windows from Microsoft in terms of drivers and firmware.

They would make more profit from selling used Airs than new Surface 3's

I wish Apple would counter and offer a Surface trade in for an iPad Air or MBA. I'll bet they'd get more takers. :D
In a sense, they did (with the help of Best Buy). I traded my Surface in @ Best Buy to get an MBA. It was a great deal for me. $450 out of pocket for a 11.6" 128GB MBA.

Not worth it, the surface isn't a very attractive replacement for a full fledged laptop, it looks like a pain to use in a lap and the touchscreen capabilities aren't useful as they are on a phone. Microsoft should focus more time on the software and less on the hardware

I am not a math wiz but...

Let me see if I have this right. MS will give me UP TO $650 trade-in for a current model MBA. I can buy a refurb 2013 MBA 11" i5, 4gb ram, and 128gb ssd for $719 (entry level). I can then trade it in plus $200 and I can get an entry level Surface pro3 12" tablet with i3, 4gb ram, and 64gb flash storage and a keyboard. Or if they require the MBA to be 13" I can buy one of those with the same specs as the 11" for $799. Again need to add $280 and I can get that same i3 tablet and a keyboard and it will have a whopping 30gb usable storage after Windows is installed. Plus, next year when Windows9 is released, I can upgrade for another $150 and I will probably then have 20 gb usable storage.

No thanks

OK, so an open box 11" MacBook Air is ~750 at Best Buy right now. You get $150 off if you have an .edu email, and can get 10% off with a coupon from the USPS. Do the math. I'm seeing a lot of MS hardware on Ebay soon...

Trade in deals are ALMOST always very lousy deals. Aside from the occasional $50 "on any working smartphone" deals ;)

As for what MS will do with the old macbook airs? They probably have a deal with a company that sells refurbs. Since these are being traded for credit towards a surface pro 3, MS will probably make out like a bandit on it. The profit margin on those tablets must be enormous.
