I can't open files from Finder either. Even with the app open.

I had this as well. Real pain in the ass. Only way I could cure was to reinstall OSX. I tried uninstalling office, rebooting everything. In the end my machine needed a clean build so did that.

All ok now.

For those who have experienced this---did you have old and new versions of Office coexisting on the same system? And if so, I wonder if going into the Get Info window for a file, telling it it open with the new version, and checking the "open all files of this type with..." option would be a fix. Just putting it out there--I haven't installed 2016 yet.

Yes I have been using the 2016 beta for the last few months. I suspect it was something to do with that. I used Appcleaner to uninstall the beta before installing the full release but it didn't make any difference.

I had two Word 2016 problems after updating from the beta: couldn't open files directly from Finder, and documents kept locking because the activation kept, well, deactivating. Curiously these occurred in Word, but not Excel.

This solution posted in the Office 365 forum here worked for me. https://community.office365.com/en-us/f/153/t/358789

1. Launch Word

2. In the Menu bar, Click Word then Preferences

3. In the General tab, make sure "Show Word Document Gallery when opening Word" is checked

4. Close the Preferences window

5. Exit Word

6. Launch Word

7. If you have a license, you should be greeted with a Get Started window

8. Click Get Started and follow the wizard.

Oh, the app opens, but the file doesn't. For example, if Word isn't open and I double-click on a Word file in Finder it will open Word, but not the file. Similarly, if Word is open and I double-click on a file in Finder nothing comes up.

I do have Office 2011 and 2016 co-existing on my MBP, but all office files are defaulted to open Office 2016.

With Excel Solver I have noticed an issue. From Solver it is not possible to point to cell and have it entered into right location in Solver. All cell references must be manually entered.

I am surprised at this as Goal Seek allows cells to entered by selecting them from the worksheet. I sure wish Microsoft would fix this as Solver is required for my applications.

Cheers,

Only Onenote and Word showed up in AutoUpdate. Had to DL from the support page.

Check your updates. Maybe some of these bugs will be ironed out.
I just downloaded the updates that you suggested. Solver still not fixed. Cell references have to manually entered instead of pointing.

I noticed the installed package size for Word dropped from 1.72Gb to 1.66Gb. MS might be dumping some beta code.
That would be a nice trend. Due to the requirement for Yosemite, I won't be upgrading. When OSX Eric Clapton is released, I'll wait for the reviews and decide whether or not to upgrade then.

Agreed, and I'd like to see localized versions as well. I've got a few MBAs and rMBPs in my company that don't have the 1TB SSD I have in my rMBP. I poked around a bit in the Word/Excel app's innards and found that both apps include about 420MB of non-localized Proofing Tools (I use US English and Spanish), including support for Afrikaans, Sesotho Sa Leboa, Arabic, Farsi, Gujarati, Isixhosa, and Kiswahili - plus a whole lot more!

I'm going to experiment with removing the unneeded Resources - for my purposes - and see if the apps will run, then reapply the latest update and see if those removed Resources are replaced...

I had to go back to outlook 15.11 earlier from 15.11.2 because it was screwed up and had to be force closed every time. There were a number of people that had that problem according to the microsoft forums. This version has fixed that and to me that was pretty much my only problem.

From my recent post (#1189), I duplicated each Office app to make a working copy and deleted non-native-language Resources and Proofing Tools in my admin account, then switched to my user account, then archived the duplicates. I had to log in again, but each app worked perfectly with no loss in function as I have need only for US English - and reduced my app size footprint a bit over 2GB in total. Word's a more svelte 1.09GB now, Excel's weighing in at 1.01GB. I'll see what the next update brings.

Anyone else suffering from slow load speeds? Once Word or Excel are open it seems to fly along but the initial execution is much much slower than on Windows. Cheers

Yes, that's my number 1 complaint. My 2013 iMac (8GB, 1Tb HDD) takes 40s to load Word, about 30s for Excel. My Macbook Air (4Gb, 125Gb SSD) loads in about half that time but it's still maddening. Word 2011 loaded almost instantly on both. I really like the builtin OneDrive access so I can work seamlessly between my Macs and my Windows machines but I'm seriously considering going back to 2011 and Dropbox.

No, on my 2015 13" rmbp all of the office apps load and open nearly instantaneously for me. Maybe it's a ssd thing.

Yep, mine on a 2012 mini with ssd load as quick, the same as pages. On spinner everything was extremely slow. It's an osx or Yosemite thing because I have Windows 10 on that same spinner and it's faster than Yosemite on the ssd.

I am a Mac user and I am a Microsoft Office user as well. I have an Office 365 subscription and I use Office for Windows, Mac and iPad.

One thing that bothers me is how Microsoft Office 2011 is inferior to its Windows counterpart. However, Office for iPad gave me some hope that the next Office for Mac may be better and have a better interface as well.

However, people on this forum are usually more interested in discussing how Microsoft and Office are a pile of crap and how Office 365 is not worth it. In my view, these discussions are worthless. Either you need or you don't need Office. I do need Office. I have tested other office suites and word processors and Microsoft Office is the only one with all the features I need. In addition to that, it is the most compatible office suite. So, I chose to pay the expensive subscription price and I am not complaining. If you are better off with an open source solution or with iWorks, then it is fine. But I am not interested in keeping these discussions.

What I would like to know is more about the forthcoming Office for Mac. Office 2011 is OK, but it is still heavy and somewhat buggy. Office 2010 for Windows was better, and Office 2013 is much better than Office 2011 for Mac. I would like to see big improvements in the next Office for Mac.

I liked the Office for iPad interface. I also liked that Microsoft employees commented that Office for iPad and Office for Mac share a lot of code, so Office for iPad helped on the de-carbonization of Office for Mac. That's good news. I guess we could expect Office for Mac to be faster, lighter, less buggy and have a better interface than the last version.

Still, I don't know if it will keep the same features. I hope Microsoft does not remove any feature (such as it did with the iPad version). On the opposite: I sincerely hope more feature parity with the Windows version.

And I also would like to have a clue on when it will be released. Office 2011 was released in October 2010; Office 2008 was released in January 2008; Office 2004 was released in May 2004.

And what about the next Office version? It was supposed to be Office 2014. I heard September. Historically, all Office versions released in the second half of the year are named after the following year. If the next Office is released in September, will it be Office 2015 then?

What do you think?

I use Mac Office 2011 everyday and PC Office 2010 everyday at work. The PC version no doubt has more to offer, but in my case its not like the added features are groundbreaking. I hope the new version of Mac Office will catch up, but at an Office user since Mac OS 7 I seriously doubt it.

Ditto...and if they don't make it available through the HUP, then I'll keep on legging it on with my Mac Office 2008 & Office 2013 with my Win7 Parallels VM (but I'd much rather stay in the Mac-side).

My experience with Office 4.2.1, Office 98, Office 2001, Office v.X, Office 2004, and Office 2008 (I skipped 2011 on the Mac) is that the majority of the time, they leave out a key feature from a previous version/don't make it as good as the current Windoze version, for ??? reasons unknown. And why is the Mac version seemingly slower? The last Office version I was completely happy with was Office 2001.

If I didn't get it for $9.95 via the HUP, I wouldn't even bother with it.

Not entirely true. If you compare Mac Office 4.2.1 that ran under OS 7 to Office that ran under MS Windows 3.11 you would see a identical product. The mac version was much slower, but it had all the features of the Windows 3.11 version of the time.

You can get Office 2016 from the Volume Licensing Service Center now, so if your company has access to that go grab it.

It's Office 2016 for Mac. I have installed it from it's beta and now it has been out of date. In my own opinion, Office 2016 for Mac is better to use than 2011 absolutely.
