Wow, this is pretty hilarious.

You got that right. That video says, "Do you know me?"

Um, "No?"

"Do you know how I can change your life?"

Oh please. If something tells me it's going to change my life, it usually doesn't. But it's those things that come out from nowhere and blindside you (ahem, iPod) that make an impact.

It's amazing how all the money in the world can't buy creativity.

I had a couple thoughts after watching that trailer.

I wonder if Apple knew that this was coming on Thursday and downplayed their invitations so that the actual event would make more of an impact.

Or it could be the opposite, M$ found out about this small Apple event and decided to overshadow it with a big announcement.

Or they both plan on releasing something big and that's why M$ is having an event on Tuesday night.

If Apple isn't putting out anything special, I hope Steve changes his keynote to include some good info about what's coming soon.

Great questions. Its probally a mixure of all of them, it feels a little reactive from MS though doesnt it?
Makes the 28th even more interesting than before.

I'd love to see an Apple take on the Origami. An iPod/iLife-branded tablet/PDA that functioned as an iCal calendar, address book, notepad, iTunes player (video and music), iPhoto, Garage Band (for making podcasts on the go!), had Mail/Safari and perhaps iChat, and had built-in wifi and could also act as a Front Row remote or send music to the Airport Express. Touch screen, no knobs, optional keyboard attachment. That's my perfect lifestyle PC.

By comparison, the Origami looks like a Magna-Doodle. It has an intimidating number of buttons and absolutely no style or elegance to its form factor. Looks like a PC product through and through. And the off-white/green version looks chintzy.

Oh, def. This is hillarious. Poor MS users and Bill Gates. They should all cry in the corner.

Why?

Because they mop the floors with every competitor they come in contact with?

Or is it because they have a 96% market dominance in the desktop environment?

Wait, maybe they should cry over the billions of dollars in cash reserves...

Sheesh

Joking aside,

This project is actually quite cool, but I gotta admit, I am the last person in the world who would actually own one of these things. I know there are many people who want a device in this size/form factor, but I am not one of them. Smaller portables have never done well, most people like one device (to fit within the palm) coupled with a larger device (for me, 15" powerbook)

However, since the intro of the ipod, my "smartphone" ish device has been the third wheel. But I HAVE to take it with me since it is so vital to my daily life...sigh...

Even convergence in this area is probably never going to happen perfectly...

I think the main difference between these two announcements is that Microsoft will be introducing a CONCEPT which will be implemented sometime in the not-too-distant future by other companies (Sony, Samsung, Dell, etc.), whereas Apple will be introducing actual products that will be available for purchase very soon.

So all of you tinfoil-hatted conspiracy theorists can probably relax... :)

This could end up being quite relevant to Apple; we'll see on Tuesday. Meantime, here's a direct link to the ad:

yeah, it could be. the point im trying to make is one i was just talking to arn about: my heart no longer skips a beat like it used to when my RSS reader says MR has a post. its stuff like this "microsoft might actually do something interesting" and the "yup, those fake looking ipod pics were fake" stories that made it that way.

Its like to ghetto chicks getting in a fight...

"Oh no you di'nt"
"Bring it on *itoch"

Ok sorry lame joke

But really I would love to see apple come out with some type of ultra-portable internet enabled device

As others have said, MS will not be releasing a product on Tuesday. Instead, they'll introduce a concept that will take months or years to get into consumers hands.

On another point, I don't know why posters here are bashing MS's handheld devices and media capabilities. Right now, the Pocket PC's (which run an MS OS) are by far the best handheld devices out there. They do pretty much everything that a full size computer can do. Palm used to dominate the handheld market, but Palm has been playing catch up ever since MS released the PocketPC operating system.

In addition to that, MS's Media Center version of Windows is pretty awesome, and it will be even better in Vista. Maybe Apple has something good up their sleeve, but Media Center currently owns Front Row.

I like my Apple products, but bashing MS on handheld and media software is silly. These are two areas where MS has clearly innovated and taken the lead.

Well said.

It's especially telling in the handheld/cellphone arena that Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 has even been adopted by PALM for use in one of their devices. I have one of Cingular's 2125 Smartphones (made by HTC) and it's sweet; hopefully I will be upgrading to a Cingular 8125 (Pocket PC with full keyboard) sometime late this week. The integration between these phones and Microsoft's server software is really well-designed... I get all of my e-mail on my cellphone and I can respond to mail or even send new mail from the phone.

And Media Center is pretty sweet, too. FrontRow does need to do some work to catch up to it (starting with TV recording).

apple rocks!

All I can say is microsoft sucks, they just keep trying and trying, but you know what bill, just ask yourself what would jobs do?

I'm excited to see what both companies have to offer. There is a little bit more of a mystery with Apple. We know what direction MS is headed in, but who knows what in the world Apple has to offer.

I'm not expecting too much from the initial Tablets.

As long as the first ones do what they are sold as being able to do properly, I will be happy.

All it is going to be, initially, is a glorified laptop. Until a better way is found to enter information, in lieu of a keyboard, it will basically be a laptop.

When I imagine what I would like of a tablet, I find that the keyboard is the sticking point. How do you get around the usefulness of a keyboard when it comes to entering text? It has to be cost effective at the same time.

A laptop with a revolving touch screen seems to be an achievable step at this point.

Is a thumb operated keyboard, similar to Palm keyboards, a workable alternative?

Maybe a revolving touch screen with a stationary keyboard.

The touchscreen would at least remove the need for a separate mouse. The mouse could be replaced with a stylus, or could be replaced by something in the form of a stylus. Either way, a mouse does not have to adhere to what a mouse looks like now.

A stylus with buttons?

Microsoft - a company with billions in the bank, thousands of smart people, and market leadership position. All that going for them and the best they come up with is this?? I'm not talking about the product itself. Talking more about the creative concept and execution of the Origami website. Is it me or does it look cheesy and uninspiring? I've got a long list of agencies who could have done much better. :p

does anyone else think its a bit unusual, that MS are having an event about something we (at least my friend and i and some on this board) are speculating Apple are bringing out?

If anything, i think it can only strenghten the argument about the iCal image meaning something more than just the date. And that the event will have a significant tie to this topic.

Just watched the video... Pretty cool - If it ran OSX.

Couldn't agree with you more. Apple tends to leave clues in their invitations.
What do people do with PDA's? SCHEDULE THINGS!!!!!! Wheeeeee! iPad. Yet another reason I wont be able to purchase a car. Or food.
But i'll be able to schedule the date that I will!

Who would want a MS portable media centre anyway....its guaranteed to about as innovative as XP :p . I hope Apple can produce something which will blow everyone away, and leave MS at the back page of all news
