Lets just hope that Apple has something like this on Tuesday. I will gladly fork out some $$$ for one of those.

As for the Origami, I concur with all the rest of you - nice concept but it looks damn ugly.

im guessing that our idea of what this "fun" product is going to way off, and steve will anounce a whole new product idea with the ipod campaign. I had a hunch apple would release something big but now that microsoft changed there stupid event to tue this means that this is going to be huge, maybe even bigger than the release of theoriginal ipod:D

Wearing the Origami is going to be like wearing a piece of paper taped to your back that says UBERGEEK.

I find it hard to believe that Microsoft is actually going down this road, despite its numerous contributions to geekdom. Maybe they can convince me otherwise...

Myabe MS knows something we dont, that would be a very good reason why they are getting in first with a 'pre-release'.

Not that i think it will make any difference, 5 points for effort though ;)

edit: reduced to 5 points, they actually need a product, not just an idea to get 10 points. :D

I don't think I understand your post.

Are you saying MS's anouncement is going to be huge?

Also, I don't think the release of the original iPod was that big. In hindsight, yes. But at the time, I don't think it was, from a market standpoint.

...

I think it is funny that since this is a Microsoft product everyone trashes it, but if Apple released this trailer it would be praised as the best thing since sliced bread.

Let's not overestimate the importance of Microsoft's announcement. They've been pushing the Tablet PC for years with little success; I'm betting that their next announcement will do little to change that.

I think it's funny you should expect different. This is a Mac site, after all.

Actually, if you ask me, Apple's lack of a Tablet/PDA product speaks volumes.

You've noticed that too? A few people here need a smack over the head ;)

I'm hoping this is a good enough device to make me want to spend my money....I need a new gadget and laptop, lol

Wow this seems to be the disappearing post thread. Sorry If I broke any kind of forum rule, but I was genuinely confused about the previous comment.

As for Origami, I saw the website. It looks like M$ is trying to copy Apple's uncanny pre-release "mystique"
They are just not doing a very good job of it.
Like a previous poster said: All the money in the world can't buy creativity. (or something like that:D )

Wow, Mac users bashing an MS product, who would guess?

Origami (I like the name, better than another "i" product and you all know it) is good in concept but it's too large. I think there are two ways to go at it. One being a PDA that fits in your pocket the other is a regular laptop (12" or so) that also functions as a tablet. Both types of devices already have plenty of products on the market so MS and Apple will have to push the innovation and desire factor.

Looks like its Oragami vs. iPad.
Just wait until MWSF 2007 financial results a la Steve. :D

I love that name (not Oragami, God knows where that came from, but iPad).

MacPod vs. iPad. Which name would you prefer? Personally, I'd take MacPod, just because iPad and iPod are soooo close together (as are MacBook and MacBook Pro, however...)

I dont think we are overestimating, just seems very reactive. Alot of people are saying 'superipodpda' type device, whouch would be stepping on MS's tablet PC toes.

perhaps this is a reaction to that, pre-emptive attempt to show they are still in the bussiness and are 'innovating'. As i said, they may know something we all dont.

who knows - sure makes for good speculation and a good show!! :D

Yeah, the MS bashing is really inevitable on an Apple form...

...However, I'm excited about Windows Vista, and I'd love to see XBOX 360 do well (I'm not too big a fan of Sony, especially after the DRM mess...)

...I really don't like the name Oragami, though; anyone know where it came from? The whole 'i' thing does get a bit out of hand sometimes (iKlear...I mean COME ON) but it does bring together Apple-associated products rather well. Kind of like Microsoft adding 'Windows' before EVERY program in Vista - only shorter...:p ;)

I think MacPod is just... awkward. iPod is simple and just, good. Like the product it describes.
Thats why my vote is for iPad. It is simple, yet describes everything that is, well, iPad.

valid point.

Depends if the device is an iPod (in the real sense of the brand, as in a music player first then other things) or a Mac. If its a mac youd expect Apple to continue the 'Mac' brand push. Maybe not MacPod...how about MacPad?

It would be an interesting push / new form factor from Microsoft, which we would hope/expect Apple to have some reaction to.

Sorry to disagree here, but this just sounds like another rehash/relauch attempt at the tablet PC, a device that has shown itself to be merely a niche market product. And given the mountians of "success" *cough*cough* tablet PC's have enjoyed, I certainly hope Apple DOESN'T respond. Let Microsoft drain some more of it's resources on a failed platform and Apple continue working on products that people actually want.

If MS is truly trying to steal Apple's thunder (about what? MS doesn't even know!) by using a proposed product that doesn't even exist, then the irony will be as follows:

* Few articles about Apple's new stuff will even mention the upcoming MS event, and few readers would remember even if they did.

* But MANY articles about MS's new stuff will mention "on the heels of Apple's new _____" or something... something concrete and of interest to people... and people WILL notice.

MS's own thunder will be stolen and, in effect, will boost awareness of whatever Apple did the same day :)

Much like every new music store or player these days can't get ANY press at all without the article ALSO giving iPod/iTunes attention in the process :)

PS, I'd love a pocketable OS X device, but that doesn't mean the market as whole is ready. That I can't say. I can however guess that when and if the market IS ready to buy into ultraportable touch computing on a large scale, MS and Windows are probably not going to be the ones to "get it right" ;)

an origami-like device (or at least what i imagine it to be) is exactly what i've always wanted out of a portable. up to this point the best i could do was to get the smallest apple laptop i could, the 12" PowerBook. but even the PowerBook has been overkill for my portable needs. it is not my main machine, been using a dual G5 at home for real work. what i need is something for when i am on the road and running around town to see clients. i don't want a "smart phone" and i don't want a PDA. i want an ultra portable something that can run OS X, with a decent enough screen and a QWERTY keyboard (touchscreen is ok with me). no optical drive. a firewire port would be nice and wi-fi is a must. flash storage would be cool too. no moving parts. good battery life. that's about it. as portable as my 12" PowerBook is, it's still another 5 pounds in my bag. along with the power supply and sleeve.

So you want a Flybook, but running OSX instead, right? ;)
