I'm 100% Apple for mobile, but Windows for PC. I opted for a Surface Pro 4 for work back when that model first came out. Can't say I was fully satisfied with it. The hardware is solid and high quality. The display is sharp and beautiful but too darn small for serious work IMO (your mileage may vary). Had some annoying driver issues here and there that I wouldn't have expected from Microsoft. I think that's better now but something to check before you buy one - don't assume just because it's Microsoft that everything will work perfectly. The pen is great, but the reality is that Windows is simply not designed for touch in the same way as an iPad. The Surfaces' form factor might fool you into thinking you can kick back on a couch and use it like an iPad and get iPad-like performance. You can use it this way, but it's Windows not iOS by any stretch (when it comes to touch friendliness). I'm using a Dell XPS 15" now and couldn't be happier with it.

I fully realize for some the Surface is the perfect Windows PC, and I'm not saying it's a bad choice for those folks. It just wasn't the best for me.

To be fair in defence to Microsoft the iPad is just a big iPhone it’s not a computer or full operating system where as surface is a computer

What is a computer?

A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.

Hmmm. Seems like the iPad is a computer after all. As far as a full operating system, I've got the full one loaded on my iPad. No partial iPadOS here.

Predictably, their two ads are:
- Surface vs MacBook, which complains that the MacBook isn't a tablet
- Surface vs iPad, which complains that the iPad isn't a laptop

I still think iPads are silly luxuries mostly only for people who can afford to also buy a laptop. If you really need both in one and don't mind Windows, seems Microsoft is there for you.

Ok well it’s not a complete system like macos or Windows it’s just icons and apps like I said I like mine but it’s just a big iPhone

The ad isn't wrong though with the iPad Pros shortfalls. It might not be what everyone wants/needs/cares about, and the surface may be just as bad/the ipad does other things way better.

But it isn't wrong, dongles/lack of 'proper OS' can be really limiting on the ipad pro for some use cases. And no, throwing another 1k at a laptop isn't always the answer, even more so now they more or less have identical chipsets.

One of my friends had a surface tablet. It was ok but quite chunky and heavy. A tablet should be thin and light.

I don't know if they've changed much as this was a few years ago but I wasn't impressed put it that way.

Even if the Surface is the better choice in every way conceivable, it would be true only until the next Windows 10 update routinely nukes a whole fleet of them so you can't even start those things. Then even an Apple Watch would be the "better choice" as it can still send messages and make calls.

But a lot of the time, it is. Some people like buying tons of stuff.
It's not so much the buying thats the problem for me. It's the physical need to carry both devices around. Seems pointless to me when the insides are the same. Since I can't remove the keyboard from a laptop, I'd much rather get around the ipads shortfalls with software (i.e. remote desktop). Really shouldn't have to given the hardware/price but there we go. Still suffers with the lack of external display support though...
I'd argue there is quite a negative here for Apple as given I'm not really able to utilise the hardware to its full potential, there's absoluetely zero reason for me to upgrade it. I don't think that's going away anytime soon unless they decide to allow people that want to be able to utitlise the hardware fully the ability to do so. The 'normal' iPad line up can stay as is, but the 'Pro' line really needs some love now, specifically on the software side.

The problem with the Surface starts with the concept itself. Anyone who thinks that the Surface is a “tablet” lives in 2007. The Surface is a computer with desktop OS, desktop IO, desktop processor, desktop thickness... it’s a classic computer, and the reason why “tablet PCs” have never succeeded as tablets. Other than for drawing (and they do it way worse) you see everyone* using them as tradicional laptops. And as a laptop, it’s not such a great product. Surface vs MBP is the real comparison. Maybe the Surface has a niche, but it’s never going to be a big hit.

In contrast to the Intel adds this is at least somewhat honest (as honest as an add can get) in pointing out differences.

It’s just an ad. Grain of salt needed.

That said, these ads are making the point that people want versatile products and point out the pain points of the iPad and MacBooks that are solved fairly well by windows convertibles. If Apple and the fans don’t like the ads, then Apple should bring out a competitive device. The current product lineup usually means more money for a lot of compromises comparatively.

But the ads also take a bit of a jaded look at the situation. Someone buying an iPad probably has a very different use case compared to someone getting a Surface tablet. It’s not Apple to Apples (pun not intended).

All in all I just wish companies could compete by just advertising what their products do and keep other products out of it. Just makes you look bad when you have to try to attack the competition to sell your product.

No one has an iPad and not a Mac it’s a luxury tablet I use mine as a media player but I will never see iPad os as a computer
An iPad Pro does the job I do much better than a surface pro, the Surface is too small for pdf's, I use them for electrical wiring drawings, battery holds up much longer on an iPad, office works better on an iPad, we also use Teams which is also available for an iPad which is a computer with an OS.
But, if you ask me, I prefer paper (electrical wiring diagrams) drawings, much easier to use than any computer.
