IOS7 won't have proper, multiwindow multitasking either.

----------

Definitely agreed.

Exactly. Proper multitasking would be windowing, at least on the large-screen iPad. IOS7 wont have it either, unlike WinRT/8 and, as rumoured, Android 5.

Windowing doest really work as well on a touch screen. :(

Blatant comparison advertisements such as this are not permitted in the UK I believe.

I'm also surprised Apple haven't kicked up a fuss due to their logo being displayed.

Safari doesn't let for changing the U-A, only third-party browsers. Which have always been let down by Apple's restrictions resulting in very frequent checkboard effects / stuttering scrolling and JS execution speed limitations.

That doesnt answer the question I asked.

The I'm a PC I'm a Mac ads were different in that most people ALREADY had a PC.
This was my thinking as well; the Mac vs PC ads sort of worked in that they highlighted common complaints that people had with PCs, sure they were embellished a bit, but it was all about getting people to consider Macs for their next computer update, and with the Mac Mini positioned for them to switch to it was a pretty good strategy.

The Microsoft Surface (or other Windows 8 tablets) aren't what I'd call switcher friendly, so I'm not sure there are many people with iPads thinking to themselves "I have no idea how to multi-task on my iPad, I'd better switch to a Windows 8 tablet". But for enticing new customers who don't have a tablet yet I'm not sure how effective such a negative advertising campaign is going to be, as it only reinforces the iPad in people's minds, after all it's the one they're choosing to take potshots at for a reason. I'm also not sure I'd call multi-tasking a common complaint from people who have an iPad; it has more than enough multi-tasking features to let you do useful things, sure I may wish there was more but I don't know anyone who finds it to be a big hindrance, and with the benefits in battery life I'd much rather have a tablet with some restrictions that I can use most of the day, rather than one that lets me run whatever I want for at the cost of hours of use so eh… it's not really a clear complaint.

If I were to snipe at anything on the iPad it'd be the way documents in apps work; it's easily the most frustrating "feature" of the platform as it makes it very hard to have two apps working with the same files, or to transfer stuff about without third party solutions (though even those are a bit too limited to work quite as I might like). It's by far the biggest area I'd like to see improvements made, but it's not something that would cause me to switch from iOS. The only plus side to the system is that it would make it even more annoying to switch to a different tablet OS, but I'm not sure it's value as a lock-in outweighs the frustration it causes.

Makes no Difference to Me

Call me a "Fanboy" but my iOS devices do what I need them to. I tried an android device and didn't like the user experience as compared to iOS. I suppose if you are the type who likes to customize your system to death, maybe android is for you. I tend to be loyal to Apple because the devices they offer work best for me and offer me a simple, easy user experience.

Seriously though, it's not that hard to multitask with the iPad with the multi-touch gestures, and it's really quick if you get the hang of it.
It would still be nice (any way, WAY overdue) if we could 'split screen' and get real multitasking (pausing an app and hiding it to switch to another is not multitasking IMO).

Would love it if you could, for example have Safari open, with notes open in iPhone format at the side.

The strength of mobile apps is exactly that it forces you to focus on one thing. We are bad at multitasking anyways, let the guy focus on the game.

Nice ad. Might work on folks who don't have the device, which I guess is a very large target audience.

I've got a windows 8 laptop and my junior employees have touch screen windows 8 desktops. It is funny to watch and see how much they actually use the Windows 8 touch or desktop. It seems they are almost entirely always in desktop mode and never use the touch screen. Except for accidentally (like, hey come look at this, points and screen and then open window moves, darn didn't mean to move it).

"Crippled"? Users are not stupid - they don't expect Mac OS X on the thing, lol.

"Simple" is very different to "simplistic". If you want fiddly, you can always go for "the other" choice :p

I remember when the iPad was first released. I was totally disappointed that they decided to put a cellphone class OS on it. I thought that it was going to be a real tablet computer instead of a big iPhone (without the phone).

Funneled through iTunes... Don't Windows RT tablets have to be funneled through the Microsoft Store for apps?

That is a big reason why I would never consider Windows RT.

ahaha. Microsoft Microsoft Microsoft. It's like a kid.

No word about the fact that half of your Surface storage is not usable ? no but there is no extension port on iPad.

A hint, because you don't need it as you can use almost all the storage the iPad was marketed for.

" its lack of built-in productivity apps"
Yeah, until iOS7 and free iWork ahaha. Now we know why Apple will provide everything "for free" (which is not really as you buy their hardware).

You really buy that? Going from a 32Gb iPhone 3GS to only a 16Gb iPhone 5 for cost reasons is so restrictive it's unbelievable when I have a 100Gb+ iTunes library and the "other" data grows a lot because there's no provision to clear the caches of storage hungry Apps like Facebook, only the option of deleting and reinstalling the whole App!

With just over 1Gb or Apps, I can fit about 11Gb of music on my 16Gb iPhone. It's a joke, just like the battery life that deteriorated rapidly after the first few months' use. If I could just add a memory card, I could top that up to 80Gb - the overhead of iOS and App caching. The iPad has equal short-comings.

I do agree about all they have done is to blow up the iPhone to tablet size.

However, I'm not unrealistic and, at the start for iPad 1 it was probably the best move. People knew the interface and it was simply a larger screen version of what they were already use to. So, it was less of a gamble to stick to what was known, and less costly to stick with something that worked, given they did now know if the iPad would be a hit or not.

So, ok. realistically and logically/practically I can accept this.

Move on 5 YEARS to iPad 5 going to launch soon and they have still not changed it from a visually zoomed up iPhone display. Well, I think by now they could of come up with something better, and I know everyone here would agree if they were totally honest.

This ad is the truth whether you like it or not. I love my iPad, but I hate the fact that I can't watch a video and do something else. Or FaceTime and search the internet. I barely touch my iPad anymore and mostly use my MBA.

These ads are funny but only in the respect that they seem to underscore the market leader. When given the choice, most people are gonna wanna take the route of least resistance, meaning the iPad. The I'm a PC I'm a Mac ads were different in that most people ALREADY had a PC.
The tablet market is so new, the NEW customer is gonna go with the tied and true.
Microsoft should be making ads that don't even mention the iPad if it wants any credibility that it can stand on its own.

I was actually thinking the same thing, especially where in the Mac vs. Pc ads most people already owned a PC and knew the struggles with Windows. At least it was my unpleasant experience with Windows that prompted me to switch to Mac back in the late 90's when people seemed scared to try Mac, at least people close to me. The big comment people made was, "it's not compatible with anything!".. Well, for me it was a game changer. Not for everyone, because Windows is functional and some people use it well. Now in these windows tablet ads it's as if the opposite is happening. People are watching these ads while holding their iPads and thinking, "Why would I ever go back to that train wreck?".... Build a product that is truly innovative, easy to use, and has the simplicity that actually makes it a functional tool that anyone can be productive with it no matter what your level of experience is with computing.

I ususally pause my video, if I had to do something else. There is no point for video to keep playing fullscreen if you switch to another app, especially not on small devices like iPad.

LOL WUT? this is showing skype... skype is their own application... showing that they did a ***** job on their own application for another platform isn't exactly looking good on them if you know what you're looking at in this commercial...

Skype is a third-party app on iOS. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a third-party app is not allowed to run in the background, no matter how good Microsoft makes it.

I suppose you're going to say that the iPad guy could have used Facetime. Well, that's not exactly going to work if the guy on the other end is skyping him from a windows PC.

But needless to say, Apple products offer practical and easy solutions to my day to day problems, so that is why I continue to use them. Not because they are "trendy."

That's good, because if you look at the market share trends, the trends are NOT going in the direction of iOS. Quite the opposite, actually. The trend is that fewer and fewer people are choosing Apple products.

It works well, best selling tablet by far, best customer satisfaction of a tablet by far. Why would they want to drastically change it? Perhaps they like their "2 OS" strategy and think if you want windows everywhere you'd be best served with one of their nice new 11" MacBook Airs? I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually add some basic functionality like "desk accessories" to the iPad, but it doesn't look like they should be in any hurry either.

Fewer by percentage overall? Because they keep selling more products (iOS at least) each quarter than in the previous year's. That means more people are choosing them than before, unless the same people are buying increasing numbers of iOS devices every year, year after year :)

Market share of idiots who "don't get it." That's soooo what Apple needs to grab!

Does nothing useful? thats like saying a USB hard drive does nothing useful....

What's idiotic is saying it is great to have USB so you can transfer photos from your tablet to your desktop...

Expandable storage (physical) is one of those legacy computing thought patterns that is becoming less and less relevant every day. People get stuck thinking they need to carry their entire video collection, 128 gigs, with them on the tablet on the off chance they want to watch one particular episode of Lost. It's a hoarding behavior that people need to change.

Microsoft OWNS skype....so what are you talking about?
