The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

This smacks of desperation now. Although Apple probably doesn't care that the iPad is getting so much attention!

Microsoft today released another anti-iPad commercial, this time focusing on the iPad's lack of a USB port while highlighting the Surface RT's keyboard and stand.

Microsoft marketing: "Ha ha! We found something about iPad that we can exploit."

Television viewers: "Wow. Apple iPads are so much cooler than those Microsoft iPads."

Part of the problem with the RT, aside from it not working well, is that it has too many choices, and there is a keyboard available for it.

It's like the Microsoft Word of editing software in a way. (It looks like a dated kludge trying to look cool?) I can't remember how many people asked me over the years if there was an easier to use program that was 'like Word, without all of the features'. Word became a bloated mess, and the 'ribbon bar' just confused more people.

The RT is an under powered insane looking device when compared to the iPad. The very idea that it is nearly always shown with a keyboard dates it and makes it look asinine when compared to the notably 'keyboardless' iPad.

So, compared to the anemic RT, with it's apparently very necessary keyboard; YES, the iPad looks very sexy and beautiful!

Especially compared to the heft and absurdly thick Pro. They both are still tied to their distant past. I mean, come on... The RT is a half baked committee decision that should have been sent to another committee, and Microsoft should fire the idiot that released the RT first, and then had to 'rush' the release of the Pro... Come on guys, are you trying to look that stupid, or is it just natural?

It's basically a laptop in a tablet form which is why they're not selling because people either want a tablet or a laptop not something that's neither one thing nor the other.

I also think that so many people are just so fed up with Windows that they're quite happy to escape to iOS or Android given the chance.

I cannot believe that Microsoft would mislead people into thinking they actually have near 32 GB of storage capacity. Then, comparing accessories that are not included--that doesn't even make sense. I would be pissed if I went to go buy one, just to find out the accessories are an additional $120+ and more than half of my storage space is unavailable. What a joke.

so you hated the "mac vs pc" ads?

The mac vs PC ads seemed dishonest to me. OS X has most of the same issues except for the number of viruses that target it... OS X is infinitely more stable, but still has issues.

(I use a Mac MOST of the time... 80% OS X, PC 10%, and linux 10%.)

It felt kind of lame watching Apple misrepresenting the PC when they didn't need to... at all...

iMac - #1 selling desktop computer.
MacBook - #1 selling laptop.
iPad - #1 selling tablet.

(Heres a ZDNet article from around the time period (I think it was 2011, not sure..): http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apple-imac-macbook-pro-are-best-selling-desktop-notebook-in-u-s/59717)

there was just no reason to distort things.

The last two years of Microsoft reminds me of a manipulative hot girl loosing her looks and fighting away every younger, hotter and more expensive girl coming into her social scene.

Sure iPad is more expensive and has less out of the box mechanical features. That is, in fact, the best part of it. There are hundreds of case types you can put it in if you want a keyboard, easel or even loops for your keitai straps.

If Microsoft wants any chance of this working, get rid of the SecureBoot feature and let the Linux community play merry hell with it. Redmond will learn a few things this way.

I can safely say, I've never once in my life wanted or needed a USB port on my tablet devices. You know we've got some excellent internet services and wireless connectivity these days...

$34B in market cap lost today. I think MS has more important things to worry about than the iPad.

The surface PRO is a laptop in tablet form.

The surface RT is just a tablet with an OS that resembles the desktop version (a source of much confusion for customers).

Surface RT is just another "iPad killer" that has bit the dust. Throw it on the heap over in the corner on top of the HP Touchpads, Motorola Xooms, and Galaxy Tabs....

Hmm

Wonder how well the pro thingie is selling. Not really well, but less of a catastrophe than the reasonably respectable RT. Windows people are funny.

Yup agreed. Never heard of someone who wanted to or liked using Windows, most only use it because they have to (work, gaming, and compatibility).

It's funny that Apple is licensing the surface's cover/keyboard concept to Microsoft.... (Apple has it patented, iirc)

Unless I'm gravely mistaken, there was a story about this a while ago.

When Mac vs. PC ran, these things were NOT true. Those ads were funny, with some great comic actors. They just helped people take another look. And they started to sell.

..Made me think of the Zune

And at least with the Zune, they had the sense to make it look like a turd (Brown? Really? Who would think something the size of a turd that isn't supposed to be a turd should be offered in BROWN!?!? Even pink was a far better choice than BROWN! They could have called it 'Mocha' and maybe pulled it off, or not... (What DID they call the brown color? Something imaginative like 'Brown'?))
