Hmm i'm always wary of these updates. Has anyone done it and come out unscathed?

Wary? Why? (please don't say b/c it's MSFT...). The Mac MSFT team puts out wonderful software. Nothing like their Windows counterparts.

Wow! Word/Excel really does launch faster now. MS probably likes me now that I just ordered an Asus ul50vt for my wife to replace her dead iBook. Mac/PC, she doesn't really care. Just wants her "lappy" back. Well, now we'll have some comparison between Win 7 and Leopard. Probably not fair though, as it will be between my 1.6 G5 and her new PC. I feel like a heretic, hearing the calls coming from the "dark side". I'd like a new lappy too. Beuller? Beuller? i7, i7?

They're kind of boxed in on doing minimal support for Office 2004 because of Macros. IIRC, the M$ rep who lurks here on MR said they didn't have the "resources" to make them work in Office 2008. Because when I think of Microsoft, I think, "there's an under-resourced company."

M$ will drop support for 2004 and 2008 the minute Office 2011 hits the market, regardless of how well it works, just to force everyone to buy it.

Don't assume that because it's MS, every units under MS have equal access to MS' funding. The MacBAU is practically a standalone company that just works with the Office Suite team on many things but the Office Suite team and MacBAU aren't the same, MacBAU is far more limited in every category.

What a difference! I have to hand it to MS. They really seem to have listened to all of the griping. This update makes Office FLY on my 13" MBP.

On a related note, I recently used Windows 7, and as a long-time Mac user, I have to admit that Windows 7 is pretty darned good. Hopefully MS will take it up another notch with Windows 8 and then Apple and MS can really start to compete again and drive each other to even greater heights of innovation. I never thought I'd say it, but I like the direction MS is taking, and I really think it will only benefit Mac users. Or at least make iWork launch faster too :D

Wow, everything starts up 3x faster for me... I just wish they would add custom animation speeds back in PowerPoint 2008, then I could trash the '04 version.

Please, report back when you open Word on a COLD start and NOT directly after having applied the update!

It’s snappy as hell always when Mac OS caches it into the memory after you launched it the first time. :D

Exactly. After a cold start, it's still slow as heck. Why can't they make it like the Windows version where you don't have to loathe every time you open a .doc file. Microsoft Office documents on the Mac is like the equivalent of PDFs in Windows!

However, typing and having words appear when in Word (once it's done with all the lag) is actually more responsive.

You guys are smoking crack....nothing launches 3x faster. If you read the MS page regarding the update the only fixes they mention are overall security and some stability items for Excel2008.

LOL! Exactly my thoughts!

This update improves security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code. In addition, this update contains several improvements to enhance stability and performance.

Improvements that are included in the update
The Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.4 Update includes the following improvements.
Improvements for all Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac applications
Helps improve security.
This update fixes vulnerabilities in Office 2008 that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code. For more information, see the security bulletin that is listed earlier in this document.

Improvements for Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac
Stability is improved.
This update fixes an issue that could cause Excel to close unexpectedly in the following scenarios:
Corrupted fonts are present.
You insert a row or value into a calculated column.
You drag the scroll bar when Excel is displaying trendlines.
Performance is improved.
This update fixes an issue that causes slow performance with certain printer drivers in Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
Imported content from a text file is formatted correctly.
This update fixes an issue in which multiple line values in a single cell appear in separate rows when you save the contents as a text file and then open the file in Excel.

Companies tend to just list the general basic stuff, not a detailed change-log. It doesn't mean they haven't done anything else, so yes, people could've experience some performance gains. Most likely it is placebo in this case or MS cleared out caches after the update.

Hey hey! Whaddya know!?! I don't have to leave Word 5mins after it booting, before using it anymore.

Well done MS, you have finally got it right. It's taken you 2 years mind....
