10.5.7 fixed all my Office 2008 + Spaces issues. My sympathies if it didn't fix yours.

I thought they were fixed with 10.5.7 as well. I don't normally use spaces, but when I did I ahd issues with programs that used pallette windows, so just turned it off. I turned it back on with 10.5.7 to give it a go...I still don't use it that often, but initially it all seems ok.

What were the issues exactly?

Not sure if anyone can help me out but for some reason every time I try to install the update, either through the autoupdate or manually downloading it, the installer tell me I cannot install the update on my HD because there is no copy of the software on that disk. I am on a MBA and only have the one main drive. Any ideas?

XML Converter Stuck at 1.0.2

Even manually downloading the Open XML converter, even trashing the existing converter program - no matter what I do, after the install it's still shows a version in Get Info of 1.0.2, and then it wants to check for updates and try the 1.0.3 critical update again. Hmmph.

Huh... holy cow... seems its fixed. Just tested it and it works ok now. I loath office just a little less now.

Issues were with the inspector pallet as you pointed out.

Looks like they got the auto updater fixed. I just re-ran it and it downloaded (154.1 MB) and installed fine.

This is as of 10:00pm EST.

I kept the Toolbox Pallet closed since it was so annoying and just added the fonts toolbar to the main window, but now that it's supposedly working I may go back to using the pallet.

Thanks for the heads up. I always prefer to download my updates manually and apply them - don't like Microsoft's updater.

Also, update worked fine.

Downloaded and, during installation, gave me some kind of error code. I clicked past it and the rest installed without a hitch.

I wonder what caused it to hiccup?

Hmmmm..... 154 MB for me. Downloading now, will edit to let you know the progress.

And for those bitching about the Spaces issue: you either were unfortunate enough to not have the issue fully fixed by the 10.5.7 update, or are too f*cking stupid to check the App before complaining. Are you really so anti-Microsoft that you don't actually use the App any more but still throw around mud-slinging opinions in these forums?

As forum member nadyne of Microsoft's Mac BU (and many others) have pointed out, the issue was party Apple's, as well. Now I am not saying that M$ Office 2008 is some wonderful App, (it is a steaming pile of under-developed crap when compared to it's Windows equivalent, and I am no fan of the U.I., either) but at least try to switch your brains on a little before bashing it

[EDIT]
...Download completed in ~4 minutes
...Taking up 479 MB of space for the install according to installer.
...Installed fine. Spaces issue is still gone. No visible changes, as this is only a security fix.
[/EDIT]

Ten hour download time, huh? :p

Thats for a 56k connection there chief :D

Funny that it still defaults to dial-up. I know there are plenty of people that still use a 56k connection, but I am still surprised that M$ hasn't just defaulted to broadband in order to estimate DL times. wutever :)

XML Converter

I'm also having the same trouble with XML sticking at 1.0.2 as StudioGuy. Tried to update several times. Tried to manually install several times, both on two different computers. The update for 2004 worked fine. Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Why do you have to wait until Snow Leopard? There are plenty of alternatives you can use right now.

Maybe you can enlighten us which non-Microsoft Mac native programmes talk to Exchange Server 2007? - which is what I need before I can dump Microsoft Office (though even Entourage isn't very reliable with Exchange).

Its working fine now....can't wait for snow leopard so I can dump Office...

What's coming with SL that'll allow you to drop Office?

On topic:
Word does seem snap.. faster when starting up the app..
Are they writing the new Office for Mac in Cocoa? Any ETA on the release?

Wow! Spaces and Office are playing nice together! :D

Lopoz: Knowing MS? Probably in the far year of 2369. When Apple has moved on from Cocoa to Chocolate or WhippedCream.

What kind of security and "performance" updates would require a 270Mb download every month or two? MSFT is being ridiculous again.

The last Leopard update that Apple shipped had the size of a full Windows XP installation CD - in other words, they shipped something as huge as a full operating system as an update over the Internet.

Their next iPhone/iPod Touch OS upgrade will also be somewhere around 300 to 400 MB - which is more than half the size of the Windows XP CD. And that will be an update for a CELL PHONE/an mp3 player.

The entire IT industry has become ridiculous if you ask me.

Too bad/hopefully the updates make office applications open faster. It seems like they take forever to load on my MBP. Then I use a windows PC and they load a LOT faster.

Exchange support in SL duhhh :p

Not looking to get flamed as it is my first post..

I am the resident IT/tech guy at a smaller company and I had an issue come up with this last update for 2004. I cant properly analyze the issue as the computer is thousand of miles away.

What happened was after the update was installed all the application icons had been removed from the dock. I have seen this happen before so I told the guy to search in finder for office and open the 2004 office file when he did that they were not in there either.

Anyone else have major issues like this with the new update.

he's running a 15" PB G4 with leopard (long story).

Still haven't fixed Spaces support?

Apple made a bunch of updates to its window manager in 10.5.7, which makes some great improvements in Spaces support for Carbon apps like Office. Make sure you've got the latest-and-greatest version of Leopard and see whether you've still got issues with Spaces.

Moving to Cocoa is part of our plan, yes. Messenger is already there, and we're moving the rest of Office in that direction.

I don't have exact release dates to share yet. Messenger 8 will hit public beta this year. Entourage for Web Services (for which we did a public beta earlier this year) will be released soon.

We're planning on a 2-3 year release cycle for the next version of Office. We've been working hard on it, with the occasional break for Macworld and WWDC. So since Office 2008 came out at Macworld 2008, I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to come up with potential release dates. :)

Issues with updating the app are usually one of the following:

1. You have moved your Office installation out of the Applications folder. If you've done this, you can move it back to Applications, and try to run the update again.

2. You have manually deleted something from your Office installation. If you have done this, you're going to have to uninstall Office (use the uninstall app, don't just delete it) and then reinstall Office. When you reinstall Office, make sure that you do a custom install so that you only install the pieces you need.

3. You have run an application like Xslimmer or Monolingual. If you have done this, you're going to have to uninstall Office and reinstall it.

4. You used an invalid product key. You'll need to get a valid product key (this is the number printed on the Office DVD sleeve) and enter that into Office. To delete the product key that you're currently using in Office, delete the following files:
/Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
Then, when you try to open any of the Office apps, you'll be prompted to enter your product key.

Nadyne.
