Hmm, downloaded and installed okay but I've had two beach-ball hangs required a Force Quit while editing in Word! Anyone else seeing problems, or am I just lucky here?

Fantastic that you were able to fix the Spaces-problem now that Apple did their part! And I think it's very nice of you to comment here. It makes me feel that you are listening to your users.

Will you be adding more bibliography styles to Word? The Windows version has more options when it comes to this, and to get the one I need to use in my papers, I have to use EndNote. It would be so much better if Word could handle this alone.

3. You have run an application like Xslimmer or Monolingual. If you have done this, you're going to have to uninstall Office and reinstall it.

What is the problem with Xslimmer? I have used it on my MBP and Office works great afterwards. It's even faster. ;)

Sorry, I can't comment on future functionality right now.

The best way to make sure that we know why this matters to you is to go to Word, select the Help menu, and then select "Send feedback about Word". Then tell us what exactly which bibliographic style(s) you want, what you're doing instead since you can't get them directly in Word, and how this impacts you. Write as much detail as you can.

This feedback goes into a database. It's important to our decision-making process because we're geeks and we like things that are measurable. It's much more meaningful to the team if I can go into that database, do some data mining, and come back with "X users commented that they want expanded bibliographic features, Y of them said that they needed Z style", rather than "I seem to remember that this guy on some online forum once commented that he wanted to use another bibliographic style". The former is numbers, the latter is relying on my rather questionable memory. :)

For the full technical details, check out leave those bits alone!, a blog post written by one of our senior developers.

In short, we don't know what changes Xslimmer is making to our binaries. In cases where we're just patching the binary instead of replacing it, we can't guarantee that the binary will take the patch if it's been changed by some third party.

Will Office windows open up at a size and screen position of my choosing with this update instead of always opening not-quite-vertically-maximized on the left hand side of the screen? It's quite irritating that none of the apps will remember window position across sessions, and I've been waiting for the update to come out that finally fixes it.

I would download the update to see for myself, but unfortunately my internet connection right now is rather slow. :sigh:

while on the subject, does anyone have an extra office license they would like to give to a poor soon to be college student that just bought his first mac?

You can use OpenOffice or NeoOffice for free while you save up some money for Microsoft Office. It's what I did when I first got my mac.

You can also check with your college and see if they offer MS Office at a deep discount (some may even give it to you for free.)

Just wanted to thank Nadyne for taking the time to respond in the forums and for sharing some of his inside insight.

And remind folks, while I'm no MS fan, these Mac BU guys & galls are every bit as much Mac fans as we are. I'm glad they put in the hard work they do.

Is office perfect ? no, but neither is Apple Mail, or Adobe Photoshop, etc... rather than complaining I think submitting meaningful constructive responses to problems you are having would go further.

Just as an example, I used to work for a home furnishings company in their credit dept. The second someone started yelling at me, calling me names etc. the Conversation was over. I'd let them keep going, but chances are everything they said would be chalked up to being from an unreasonable person. But someone that came and rationally explained their issue, I'd work through the whole thing with them if it took me all day. I WANTED to help people, and provide the best services possible, just as I am sure the Mac BU guys do.

Office 2004? I'm sticking with v.X

It's fun to read all the complaints about Office 2004 & 2008. I'm still quite happy plugging along in v.X on a PowerBook. Not seeing the big motivation to upgrade here....
:apple:

Depends on what you use it for I guess. Textedit is just fine for some people. So is Google Docs.

However, v.X on an intel Mac would give motivation to upgrade, if for nothing else other than not having to run under Rosetta.

I will definitely be using Word 2008 more now that the Spaces issue is fixed. IMO it is one of the better apps for taking notes with in lectures/classes...

Powerpoint animation speed

Still no custom animation speed in Powerpoint... :(

I have to keep Office 2004 installed just for this one feature... Please, please bring back this very tiny option in a future update.

Does anyone know if this update is a combo or does this build on top of all the others? Reason I ask is because I have all the updates from 12.1.0-12.1.9 stored in a folder taking up about 2GB of disk space. If I can trash all the previous updates and keep only the latest, that would free up a nice chunk of disk space.

Apple made a bunch of updates to its window manager in 10.5.7, which makes some great improvements in Spaces support for Carbon apps like Office. Make sure you've got the latest-and-greatest version of Leopard and see whether you've still got issues with Spaces.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks that 10.5.7 fixed spaces and office 2008. Try making 2 word documents and put each in a different space. Then switch to one of those spaces. Both documents stick together still. The software promised spaces compatibility as one of its perks, yet it still does not deliver. It makes no sense why 2004 worked with spaces and why only word 2008 does not work correctly while excel and ppt seem to work fine in spaces. I'm no programmer, but I assume that all of these apps are coded very similarly; if you can make it work for all of 2004 office and ppt 2008 and excel 2008, then it sounds like word 2008 would similarly be possible to work with spaces correctly. Please fix this or tell me where i'm going wrong here =\

If you click the signature blog link, he is actually a she. ;) Regardless, all the help from that Mac BU team is most welcome around here.

erased memory

How does this erased memory thing work? Does it cause your computer crash or just erase the word doc.?

If you need the ones from Windows, you can just copy the files over. They're XML style sheets (.XSL files), so platform doesn't matter. You won't see the option in the Document Elements -> Bibliography list, but they will show up in the references tab in the toolbox. You just have to add the bibliography then change the citation style through the toolbox to update it.

The Windows Files are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Bibliography\Style. (assuming you installed it to the default location)

The Mac Files are in
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app/Contents/Resources/Style.

you might want to check out zotero to rid yourself from endnote and its ills. great free and open source bibliography app supported by andrew mellon foundation and george mason university. I migrated all my endnote files to zotero over a year ago and can absolutely recommend it. its a way better app 100% compatible with office, very nice integration of online resources, integrated online backup, tons of styles available, very responsive online support and community - and did I mention its free ;)

To fix the problem with installing this update:

Uninstall the entire program and then reinstall it. Run the AutoUpdate and install the update. It should now work.

Check with your university before you go out and buy (or, ahem, procure) Office. Many universities offer Office and other Microsoft applications to their students for a very very inexpensive price. Otherwise, back-to-school season will be upon us soon, and lots of retailers have great sales in the summer.

I know, the author is sometimes harsh but offers definitely some good points for future development of the software.

I've had plenty of conversations with Pierre. He does occasionally make some good points about our applications, although I think he's often off the mark as well. He forgets that he is but one of our millions of users, and his use is not representative.

12.1.9 is a combo updater (as was 12.1.7). It requires that you have SP1 (12.1.0) installed, so do keep that one around if your Office DVD is 12.0.

(And yes, I am a she, thanks for pointing that out. :) )

get used to it, Microsoft has a history about their updates then they release fixes to fix the fixes.

How many times must it be stated that the issues with Spaces and Microsoft Office will not be fixed in MS Office 2008? The complaints on this are getting old. It happens each time there is an MS update and the answer is the same each time. They can't/are refusing to fix this in the current Office suite.

Thank you very much for the insights Nadyne.

Do you know whether this update fixes compatibility issues in equation editor between word mac and windows? I'm collaborating with a partner in writing a paper, he uses windows. The equations doesn't appear correctly both in windows and mac. One workaround is that we do the equations in a separate file then save it in a pdf format so that we can reach each other's update, and then we copy paste the pdf into word. It would be easier for us if the equations are both readable in mac and windows. Thank you.
