Yeah, the Mac guy in the store is a PAIN, but he is a total fanboy, and that is crazy annoying.

However, the MacBook lets you upgrade the RAM and HDD easily enough. I mean, laptops are not that upgradeable to begin with.

The iMac is an all-in-one, and most of them are not upgradeable either. It's a downside for some, but if you keep having to upgrade parts in a computer, your not saving very much money.

If you want a gaming rig, never buy it, always build it yourself. I could make a pretty slick gaming rig for $600.
I went with the Macbook at the time (Late 2007) because you couldn't upgrade the hard drive easily in the Macbook Pro. I upgraded it with a 320 GB hard drive and 4 GB of RAM off of a NewEgg which is all that I'll ever really need.

I then built my own Windows tower for gaming and tinkering. No complaints here on either purchase.

I'm sure people are saying that about Apple's commercials of late.

I thought this commerial was good. Apple doesn't offer a system with a Bluray player. That is a sure selling point for many people.

Apple has been silent in responding to these commercials. Wonder what they have up their sleeves.

To bad you won't be able to finish that Bluray movie on your laptop while on battery power. It has to be plugged in to watch the entire movie, and if that is the case why not just watch it on your HDTV.

:(

Dude that kid is probably eligible for an education discount. With the education discount macs are a BETTER value. I got my unibody macbook pro 15.4" for $1500.

I am listening! Refurb education discount? I want a Pro but cant justify paying over $1500 for a computer.

I hope they'll make similar ads for desktop computers instead of just laptops. The reaction in this forum will be worth reading.

All you are doing is reiterating my point. Your first point is related to VMWARE, a 3rd party app. Your MAC crashed because you wanted to run Windows virtually using a 3rd party app and you blame OSX. Like I said, user error. If you wanted to run Vista either buy a Vista machine, use Boot Camp, or live with the fact that essentially running two OS's at the same time is a drain on resources and increases the chances of a crash. I have no comment about the "sleep" issue as it has never happened to me, and I have over 200 gigs of music in my iTunes library and have imported 5 gig chunks at one time and have not experienced the issues you described.

Like you, I have NEVER EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE ISSUES with Vista that everyone else is talking about. I have a custom built high-end machine. Vista, out of the box, has been a fun, productive, seamless experience. I'm a software developer and I want my PC to just work, and Vista just works.
With OSX, I've had 7 crashes already.

OS X cannot play bluray movies (true uncompressed bluray). You need GPU decoding to play true bluray and there is no software currently for OS X that uses GPU decoding. There are PLENTY of software for Windows that use GPU decoding.

You can try to watch bluray movies in OSX, but it will stutter badly.

How long will a battery last playing a blu-ray movie?

A 9-cell battery should last about 2-3 hours (on pc laptops only) aslong as the proper software is used (GPU decoding). On the macbooks, it may last significantly less because it will use the CPU to decode which is very inefficient.

Microsoft has once again successfully hit a nerve in the Mac commnunity and stirred up noise on the message boards.

Wahh wahh wahhh!

You know, guys (collectively), get a life. I rarely respond to these posts but I gotta throw myself in the mix here.

First off, I'm a Mac, my wife's a Mac (after switching from the Dark Side last week!) and my 4-yo little girl is a Mac. So, with that said, I LOVE THESE ADS! Why? Because I'm not a nerd who reads the specs, memorizes it word-for-word and can recite them for each computer I see. For God's sake, is no one getting what MS is trying to do here? You guys are knowledgeable but the avg soccer mom in the suburbs is clueless and just wants something that's good and is at the best price (especially if there's 3+ kids in the house). And, she will be more likely to take the advice of a sales person vs doing her own independent research.

So, with that said, this ad is perfect. It puts price out there as their #1 competitive advantage. $500 more for a Mac for a family just getting by today is a lot! MS has capitalized on the best thing they have: Buy Windows + Save Money. They should use that as their tagline.

Everyone who's whining about 'this person is annoying', is buying into the reality of the situation. People, in "real life" are really f***ing annoying and it makes this ad even more credible.

For the record, I would never ever buy a Windows machine but I appreciate the brilliance of the ad. Watch their sales skyrocket! And, Apple, we're waiting for the next round of brilliance!

Ok.

I personally don't really care much for the ads. The computer that Lauren bought is a POS and that other guy wanted small size and prtability and went with a 16.4', so that's just funny. I haven't seen this third one, but what some soccer mom buys her kid will have zero effect on what I buy. I consider myself very tech-savvy and I research my purchases throughly before buying.

A Sony laptop is hardly a deal though, they are expensive!

Yeah - its usually quiet fairly here.

We sit here with our pretty machines, running intuitive and reliable OS, not much to complain about really. :D

If only we had something egregious to complain about.
Like Zune, Windows mobile. Or maybe even V*sta?

An OS apparently so unlovable that the latest ads for it dare not speak its name and are reduced to selling third party hardware. ;)

Yeah you really stung us there. :D

The Mac OS aaahhhhh

I might, that is might, be tempted to buy a peecee, but only if it was running a Mac OS! It's not that these companies are all making totally crappy machines, it's the OS that makes them crappy. Windoze is the problem, at least the number one problem at the top of the list.

Microsoft are doing the only thing they can do right now, and that's attack the hardware and price.

Let's be honest, Macs are more expensive hardware than most equivalent PCs. There are always cases where the price will come close, but most times PC OEMs can offer much cheaper prices.

That being said, Apple has decided not to compete in that market. Doesn't matter how much they bought the parts for, or what their margins are. Apple as a company has chosen to price their hardware according to what they feel they can sell it for. The market (customers) will determine for Apple whether their decisions are correct or not.

What Microsoft can't do right now is argue Vista vs OS X. They want to run away from Vista and that name as fast as they can. It's tarnished. Doesn't matter whether it works now or not....the bad name and vibe is out there.

So right now their only choice is to hit Apple where they can.....hardware, specs, and price.

Personally, I think it's much more than just the initial cost that justifies buying a computer. I try to look at the overall experience. Afterall, you don't buy a computer to just have it sit on the table.....you have to turn it on and use it. This is where the operating system and applications come into play.

My personally, I love OS X. It's the reason I use a Mac. It's the reason I switched my Mom to a Mac. Plain and simple, I am able to work better and more efficiently in OS X. It's a pleasure to sit down at my desk everyday and use my computer....not a chore.

My mom was fed up with her Vista laptop. I got her a MacBook and she hasn't looked back.

iPhoto vs. Windows Picture Gallery.....no competition there.

Apple Mail vs. Windows Mail.....again, in my opinion Apple wins here.

Screen sharing in iChat and Leopard.....brilliant and seemless. No port forwarding, no configuration. My mom has a question or issue....no need to wait until the next time I see her....or try to walk her through it on the phone. Just have her sign onto iChat and see the situation myself. This also goes for screen sharing between my own Macs. Simple, easy and works everytime.....built right into the OS.

The little things built into OS X that help my productivity are what matter to me.

Time Machine is awesome. Works in the background, no hassle, no fuss, and has saved my ass on a number of occasions. It did exactly what it was designed to do....make backups easy.

Spaces. I develop of my Mac all day long. Spaces has changed the way I work. No longer am I messing around with tons of open windows in my face. Everything is organized accordingly.

Expose. Perfect implementation of window management. Just a simple keypress or mouse shortcut I can see all open windows, or just my current apps open windows.

The overall interface and design of OS X. To me, Aero is UGLY. I mean c'mon, why do I want to see a window behind the current window I'm supposed to be focused on? I think OS X (other than Aqua....man I can't wait for Marble) is beautiful. And when I have to sit on my machine all day long and actually USE it.....it makes me more efficient.

I was a Windows user....still am. But my main machine is a Mac, and the reason....OS X.

Do I want Apple to license OS X to run on any hardware....no not really. I do think OS X benefits from the closed system that it's in. Yes there is a price premium, but me personally, I'm willing to pay for it, in return to get what I feel is a better user experience.

Hopefully for Windows users, Windows 7 increases performance and reliability. Overall, I still think it looks ugly and is way too cluttered and messy.

-Kevin

Thank you, Kevin for this wonderful post. It encapsulates much of how I feel about MAC OSX, the utility, the experience, and - yes - the opportunity cost of going Mac vs. PC. Since I switched to Mac as my main system, I saved so much in time alone avoiding all the nonsense associaed with optimizing a Windows machine. As an aside, as soon as MY mother's older DELL Dimension gives up the ghost, I'm probably going to get her a Mini.

I still work and play with PCs, but now I prefer the Mac and budget my future needs around all things Apple as a result. If the hype surrounding these Microsoft ads results in Cupertino lowering prices, licensing OSX to other hardware manufacturers, or re-thinking the user-self-servicing and upgrade capabilities on future products, I say, Amen to the possibilities. Consumers like choices. The biggest and most effective response to the M$ ads is not an expensive re-tooling of the MAC vs. PC commercials (which I loved, btw), but rather - a significant and transparent change toward this end (more choices) for Apple's customers.

:apple:

I agree. Well said.

FAIL

This ad is stupid ;-) Is that Vaio supposed to be a gaming laptop? It has some rubbish gpu, not even worth noting. Heh... Even on Microsoft's ground -> gaming, they still can't think about anything clever to say...

Incidentally, MBP + Win XP is 10x better gaming machine than that Vaio (I'm not saying the Vaio is bad, it's just multimedia all-rounder, but certainly not for gaming).
