I remember listening to the live audio of a MWSF keynote. This is lightyears beyond that and not crippled by Flash.

I can web browse without killing my live stream too.

It's no more or less than what I was expecting from Ballmer. I trust you're familiar with the "developers developers developers" video clip?

I don't *want* to hate on this, cos I honestly would like to see some real competition in the tablet market, but I can't help but notice how *everything* about this is more sterile and corporate than I'm comfortable with. Also, the camerawork seems really amateurish imo.

I wish it was a set camera, not some guy moving around.

I have seen that clip, and other Ballmer clips but never actually watched a MS keynote (or whatever it's called... power point? presentation? haha). I think it's just because I was so excited about seeing more of that Courier thing to push the envelope - I mean, maybe we still will but based on the press release it doesn't seem that way.

Much like yourself, I would love to see a lot of innovative ideas in the "new" tablet market. That Lenovo Ideapad U1 Hybrid is a REALLY cool idea. I think the Courier had some interesting ideas as well... but this is just killing me to watch haha.

That's good

Echostar/Dish has moved mostly (entirely by now?) to MPEG-4.

To be honest I didn't know what they are using now. I'm just going by my two Dish boxes that say MPEG-2 on them. I'm glad they have moved up then. :)

The live stream really is awesome. Although I'm really comfortable with how apple events plan out during the work day... I spend all morning browsing the web for last minute leaks/rumors.. comes on around 1pm EST (I think?)... refresh multiple pages, ignore any actual work for the next hour or so, then further delay work reading reviews/analysis/etc... by the time I'm home the stream of the keynote is available and I sit down and watch it, having already read dozens of articles.

I just re-read that and I'm fairly embarrassed haha

Microsoft understands scaling.
Silverlight is great for video streaming as I've said before. Even with this live stream you can do PVR actions, rewind, hop around, or just go live.

I'm back at home now and limited to 768 kbps but it's still live and I'm working in other tabs too.

Agreed, this is really cool. Having been a little spoiled recently by more HD youtube videos etc, I can't help but feel that the video quality of this stream is a little shaky. To be fair, this is probably more a function of Microsoft trying to ensure they have enough bandwidth than any particular limitation of Silverlight (I hope!)

Is the audio starting to get a bit weird for anybody else?

If your mpeg2 boxes still work they must have gone to mpeg4 only on the Hi-Def (and probably the new arc). At one point I had to trade in my HD boxes for mpeg4 versions (there was an add-in card for mpeg4 at one point, too).

Holy ballmer just got a lot louder
I sense the screams of a thousand nerds.

The audio dropped out occasionally and it looks like they increased the gain. Ballmer was on my right speaker as he moved to the right side of the stage too...

Did anyone see the look Ballmer threw that guy when he made his comment about "being thin"?

Apparently form the stories last night. I never bought it though. The Courier screams vaporware all the way

Right.

From Engadget:

Microsoft's CES keynote has been marked by disaster: first the power went out, knocking the PCs on stage into recovery mode, and now the PR for Ballmer's speech has posted early. The big news is no news -- that HP slate device is a Windows 7 PC, not the rumored Courier tablet.
