On a Holiday

THis news is such a lead balloon they chose a Holiday to release it! Win 7 is DEAD....... Apple Inc. rules the world now!!!:apple:

I really hope this sets a fire under Steve Jobs' a** so he gives the iPhone a good upgrade this summer. Higher res OLED screen, SD slot, etc. "

SD slot? Would you also want a serial port in case you want to connect your portable dot matrix printer?

Apple doesn't make the iPhone for you. 99.9% of the people neither need
an SD slot nor do they even fill the space they got. I know it might sound outlandish to you, but it is true.

Notice that the announcement was all about Microsoft: while they listed "partners" that have "committed" to using the OS, there were no launches announced with it, no demonstrations, nothing to prove that the OS will gain real traction.

Think about this from Microsoft's perspective: a few years ago they dominated the PC OS market (and still do). Now in the mobile market they find that not only do they have to fight Apple, plus Google AND many of the hardware manufacturers. It would be like HP and Dell announcing that they will make a few computers with Windows, but will use their own OS on the others.

the interface looks SO MUCH BETTER then the one in the iPhone. iPhone's interface is BORING and it SUCKS! simple as that.

Its all about the apps, the iPhone interface is only an intermediate to start the apps. The iPhone has 4 screens with app-icons, that basically covers the complete interface. What part exactly do you want to change with the innovations from MS?

Windows Phone 7 looks like a winner,... makes the iPhone and Android look dated. Microsoft is really coming out swinging here.

Sure, it wins the vaporware award for

No SPECS
No final feature set
No price
No actual delivery date

Ever heard of longhorn / vista?

The first phones are coming Holiday 2010? That's like 8+ months from now. By then Apple should have released the next iPhone as well as new Blackberries and who knows what else.

I dunno...the MS OS seems to have some neat features but it seems a bit cluttered. I guess we'll see in 8 months. :)

Sorry but I've got to respectfully disagree. The iPhone OS is very much in badly in need of a major overhaul.

-the PNS is totally broken since there is no list of the ones you have missed and is completely invasive by taking over your screen

-there is no multitasking and at least MS has Pandora built into WM7 so it can stream in the background

-no lockscreen info so constantly have to unlock the iPhone to quickly view info

-no background wallpaper (though the iPad's 3.2 indicates it's coming)

-no shared documents folder similar to photos and videos (there are rumors this is coming)

You are spot on....

I am seriously getting sick of having to unlock/enter pin to see if I have any emails.

That first phone looks butt ugly. the operating system sucks and the phone design in general is bad as-well. It looks like a zune. wow

It's VERY pretty, but over-designed. Integrated, but confusing. End result is everything looking the same. Interface detracts from content. "What app am I in?" "how do I....?" "Where's my new app?" Etc, etc.

A spectacular failure.

I really hope this sets a fire under Steve Jobs' a** so he gives the iPhone a good upgrade this summer. Higher res OLED screen, SD slot, etc. I have tons of songs & videos & I don't want to have to choose which ones I want to take. I hate talking to friends about something and being like "Oh, I have a great picture/song (whatever) here on my iPhone… oh wait. I didn't have room."

omg when will people stop saying this.. WHEN HAS ANY PHONE COMPETITION put a "fire" under jobs ass? name one phone.. palm pre had background process iphone 3GS didnt and same with those other phones.. jobs and apple really arnt worried about these nothing phones Yup im a fan boy SAY IT LOUD SAY IT PROUD.. so what that were fan boys, because we like products that work how they are supposed to and have constant good updates and great customer service with a company .. Ill be a fanboy for a very long time until thoes things stop happening ..

Looks pretty cool.

Makes the iPhone OS look pretty dated....time for a redesign Apple!

Three generations later the iPhone's GUI is still the same boring row icons, with no home screed, and no real "wow" to it. Just like OS 10.6 has the same boring Aqua GUI elements as OS 10.

Hey Apple, "Think Different Redesign".

Do we really have to wait 4 months to see what Apple are replying with? Lot of momentum to lose if you ask me.

Probably not. If history is any judge, Apple will hold an OS 4.0 preview event in March.

January 9, 2007 - iPhone introduced
March 6, 2008 - iPhone OS 2.0 previewed
June 9, 2008 - iPhone 3G announced
March 17, 2009 - iPhone OS 3.0 previewed
June 19, 2009 - iPhone 3GS announced

"Apple will deliver aggressive updates to iPhone that Android won't be able to keep up with,” Jobs at Apple Town Hall meeting just a few weeks ago.

Also, lol at the people who keep saying Microsoft stole from Apple. Read up. Apple took them to court. Check out who won that argument.

You were doing a pretty good job until you made the stupid comment above. Regardless of the outcome of lawsuit, there is no denying that Microsoft has and continues to copy Apple. Underneath this crappy interface is still Windows CE, they just put a different shade of lipstick on the pig.

The zune phone has a terrible UI that takes so much space to convey so little information.

What if facebook is a fad? what if someone hates facebook - does the whole phone fall flat?

I'm pretty sure I need all the one click functionality and app centric approach that I get off my iPhone homescreen - I like a map to know where I'm going, a camera, stocks, weather, calendar, etc. I really could care less about having what my friends are doing pushed at me - this is my navigation tool, my notebook, my tape recorder, my camera, my phone - not just some dumb social network - my iPhone is about doing, not watching what my elementary school friends had for lunch on Facebook, no thank you.

I find it difficult to perceive how poorly refined, bloated blue squares, which take up so much screen space while projecting the obvious, can be considered compelling, sleek, or efficient.

Generically referring to my contacts as 'People,' or should we say 'eople,' reveals to what extent this is an extension of the Zune OS, and how little refinement will likely be going into it.

Apparently so.

I'm not a fan of the "spillover on purpose" look.

I think it's their interface programmer trying to cover his own ass from this mistake:
http://cheezburger.com/View.aspx?aid=2638330624

The interface programmer convinced the dilbert type Microsoft management that "things cut off" is "design."

Please anyone, in which way does this look in any way "special" or "new"?

It very much looks like "hey guys, we need to do something different, otherweise we will look like total losers". Yes, competition is good, but as long as everyone is totally clueless how to come up with something better and useful, Apple needn't worry.

Something useful: Google's free nav app. That's actually a reason to buy another phone. It shows that you don't always need great ideas to compete. The will to improve the user experience is good enough.

Something clueless: a contrived different approach to apps ("hubs") that works for like 2 seconds, but when you think about it longer, there's nothing really that would create more fun or productivity. It just makes everything more complicated and intransparent. How do 3rd party apps fit into all this?

Samsung: boring. Another new OS, another platform with not enough developers. Bada is dead in the water. I'm sure they've already internally switched to Android for the long run.

i agree, the iPhone OS is pretty outdated after 3 generations imo.

is it really that hard to at least add notifications or some icons for new mails etc to the status bar or the lockscreen so u dont need to unlock your phone every time to check if anything is new? the whole lockscreen could be used "officially" for so much more. hell, the jb community even managed that years ago
