Gates is hailed as some sort of brilliant mind, but it was actually hard work and one momentous piece of luck with IBM adoption
Also he was notorious for stealing technologies like Stacker and stuff from DR DOS. And the original MS DOS was simply a clone of CP/M. He also wasn’t beneath not paying subcontractors and other companies who did work for him. He was ruthless. But his legacy is secure because people only see the philanthropy these days of a mega billionaire.

It's all about Azure now, and to a lesser extent, 365 subscriptions.
Azure was a really good play for them. O365 turned out to be one, though they have had to acquire some third parties to fill it out. In the end I think MS is positioned very well to be indispensable.

Kinda interesting to look back and see just how badly Microsoft (and others) misjudged the mobile space. Palm, Nokia, MSoft, RIM, Motorola. All either gone or a shell of what they once were.

It's hardly news, it has been coming for a while, this is the final nail in the coffin.

Focussing on areas such as Office 365 and Azure is probably the right place for them and they are producing decent hardware in some areas. Sometimes you need to admit your throwing money at the wrong things. Something Apple has yet to do.

Gates' talent was to catch up to industry trends either through weasel work, buying an existing product and repackaging it, the infamous "embrace, extend, extinguish" tactic, or some combination of those three. It worked amazingly well in the '80s and '90s, but with the rise of the internet in the '00s things started moving much too fast for that to be effective anymore. It became like trying to change course with a cargo ship to match the course of a speedboat.

If they had any future plans to release the speculated "Surface Phone" they just torpedoed it by telling all their customers to move to other platforms.
I doubt they will at this point, I was on WP (for Nokia hardware) over a couple of phones and MS support for the platform was abysmal. Enough to put me off for life. I don't doubt they've got enough similar feedback to realise even trying again is a nonstarter.

Now get the live tiles off of Windows 10 desktop...

I like live tiles for weather. For everything else I just right-click and turn them off. It's at least nice to have the option for though.

Decent OS, just came way too late.

I agree. I generally heard positive things about Windows Phone, and while I haven't seen one around in a long time, those I know who had them seemed to really like them. I liked that MS took a different approach to UI with it,

I blame Ballmer for their lack of vision.

I blame Ballmer for everything negative at MS. :)

Doesn't mean they weren't good business people and didn't work hard as they rode their monopoly to great profits, but that was despite not being innovative or visionary.

Drop the word monopoly and you could be talking about Apple now.

Decades later and their desktop OS still sucks balls.

I think a few Windows versions were pretty sucky. But I recently just switched back to Windows after years as a Mac user and Windows 10 is actually fine. It runs well, has lots of features, and certainly quality hardware is more affordable.

Or maybe, just maybe people actually like and prefer Windows and the ability to have a decent computer for 1/4th the cost of an equivalent Mac?

Yes.

So why did it fail? And don’t claim marketing. If it was as great as you claim then why did developers leave it? You know, Commodore Amiga users used to claim it was vastly superior to the Apple II and Macintosh but couldn't come up with a reason for it’s failure except that people who bought Apple were stupid.

The bets product doesn’t always win. In this case, the fact that it didn’t have certain apps doomed it from the start. Then you have Microsoft’s initial idea of charging for the OS leading to fewer companies pushing phones. It wasn’t just one thing.

Why did WP fail? IMHO, it came down to Microsoft's business model of licensing.

Apple developed both the OS software and the hardware to run it on. They had a completely closed system and got 100% of the revenue from every phone sold.

Android gave the OS away in exchange for bundling Google services which is what generated advertising data and consequently revenue.

Microsoft, on the other hand, charged a fee for every device made. I seem to remember it was something like $30 - $60 per phone which is quite a bit to take off the top. As a result you had a very limited number of manufacturers willing to go with WP over Android. That lack of devices resulted in a lack of users which resulted in a lack of developer support. It was a death spiral that MS could never get out of.

I did like some of Windows Phone features but I can see why it wasn’t that popular; it’s a shame, in some ways, as Android and iOS needs some competition.

Having that said my friend had the Lumia 800 (I think) and I remember he was unable to adjust the text size settings; from an accessibility point of view that’s very user unfriendly in my opinion.

Microsoft celebrates death of Windows phone with ‘mock’ funeral at its Redmond campus.

Wouldn't it have been easier to call the two people still using it?

Its going to be interesting to see how many pro windows mobile 10 people come out of the woodwork now to say how better it is than IOS.

That made me laugh.

I see your point. I am afraid that you have to be prepared to pay such prices to maintain a certain degree of privacy nowadays. On top of that there is no guarantee that the concept will work in the long run. I'll keep an eye on the development anyway
Thanks for sharing the link to this. I wasn’t aware of it. I imagine more people would be willing to plop down $600 on a phone that hasn’t been released yet if they knew the specs it would have. They don’t even say how much storage it will have or if it will be expandable. Headphone port and user replaceable battery. That’s it. If the company folds could android be installed to repurpose the device? IDK. They better have top notch financial backing because they’re entering a competitive market where the vast majority of users aren’t savvy enough to appreciate what this company is proposing to do. They’ll need years to get established before they can make a profit. Glad they’re out there but I have to wait and see what the accomplish.

.

Which company has been more innovative than Apple ? (not talking about demo products that never ship.)? Certainly not Google or Amazon or Microsoft or Samsung.

Xerox really.
Yep, remember this interaction between SJ and BG?

"You're ripping us off!", Steve shouted, raising his voice even higher. "I trusted you, and now you're stealing from us!"

But Bill Gates just stood there coolly, looking Steve directly in the eye, before starting to speak in his squeaky voice.

"Well, Steve, I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it."

Part of the failed legacy of Gates and Ballmer. Gates is hailed as some sort of brilliant mind, but it was actually hard work and one momentous piece of luck with IBM adoption. They bought their original horrible OS for $30K from someone else and then had the great fortune to get IBM to license it, and the rest is history. When your OS is default for the manufacturers, it doesn't matter that it was terrible, and the money still pours in. Just like with Internet Explorer. They had a unique lack of vision, unlike Jobs. Kept tinkering with the horrible MS-DOS and couldn't envision things like GUI, mouse, etc. Windows concept was stolen from Apple and only Apple's poor IP protection in its licensing to MSFT kept MSFT from having to pay many billions.

Doesn't mean they weren't good business people and didn't work hard as they rode their monopoly to great profits, but that was despite not being innovative or visionary. After leaving Microsoft, Gates has a steady track record of not being able to envision the future, but because of his wealth is still hailed as some sort of genius and shows up on talk shows.

The same monopoly MS had helped them/it also to dominate with Office! going back to the ?early 90's.

Their last best OS is still Windows 7.

Waiting to see Windows II/11 to see what they deliver - 10 is not as good as MacOS.

Ooh, I have a great idea!

Microsoft should hire Ellen Feiss to make the recommendation to switch for them:

I think she's about 31 years old now, but I'm sure people would recognize her name.

I guess I'll be the first :p. Windows Phone 8 + Mobile had the smoothest mobile UI ever made, even on terrible hardware. With iOS you're lucky to have it not jitter on even the most recent hardware anymore, depending on if Apple has made a mess of whatever the current version of software is running or not.

Curse you Microsoft and your inability to sell anything that isn't Windows or Office. And abandon your product three times to make a new version. And lack of advertising. And lack of support in markets where the product does sell well. And a couple dozen other things.
