Also consider that on a laptop where you can't add additional storage internally you can just permanently buy an SD card to leave in it to add local storage. Before they removed it there were companies that made them nice so they would sit flush with the edge of the case with a clip or something you could use to remove them.
yes, i remember that — i looked into doing that, but didn't like how it had to be a separate volume(which is completely understandable, of course).

The adds are silly. I have to say though, not needing a feature personally is no reason to wish it away for others.
I have plenty of reasons for a touch screen, no reason for Windows though. So I'm stuck using third party soft and hardware to get the mixing and control of virtual instruments I want in the Raven. https://slatemt.com/raven-mti2/
I would rather have the new iPad Pro with M1 inside run Mac OS though. It's almost a crime that the company with the fastest portable chips, and best touch screen tech only run iOS on that device. I'm hoping Apple release a cross platform Mac OS.

i'm curious what percentage of people would even use a card reader...
I don't, but if things shouldn't exist because only 10% of people use it, macOS wouldn't exist.

It does surprise (and annoy) me that they’re bringing back SD card instead of USB A. If they’re not going to do all 3, which they should, USB A and HDMI are the clear choices IMO.
Who says USB-A isn't coming back? I didn't pay a lot of attention to those stolen schematics but I thought USB-A was set to make a return?

Dongle requirement on the Macbook Air isn't nearly as bad as AirTag that requires a dongle loop to even attach to something.
Or a brand new Apple TV Siri remote that doesn't include a U1 chip.

Microsoft is absolutely correct, removing common ports from the Mac was a stupid idea. I wonder how much money Apple saved?

I doubt I would buy a SUrface for this reason but lack of ports did prevent me from upgrading a mac.

well that's a silly comparison, to say the least. think of all the things you just brushed away because they aren't used by more than 10% of people... try staying within what apple is doing — it might help you understand my point.

Sadly, though, they have a point. First thing I had to buy for MBA and MBP was a multi-port dongle. And iPadOS is woefully lacking c.f. macOS. A Surface isn’t perfect, but then again, Apple used to lead the way. Now it’s following.

I don't understand the obsession with pushing a touchscreen as necessary or desirable feature. I would struggle to think of any meaningful or longterm reason why I would want a touchscreen on my computer. To me it would be one of those things you might use at first because of the novelty value but after a while you'd never use it again.

IMO this is akin to the one button mouse arguments all those years ago. The iPad sells like crazy for a reason, and anyone using plug in with virtual sliders and knobs on a screen know exactly why you would want to use a touch screen. In fact all kinds of things are better with touch. it doesn’t eliminate the mouse entirely but it sure makes it a secondary item once you get used to it. Mind you this is all with ipad levels of haptic response, which in my experience isn’t there in Windows.

As has been mentioned every person I’ve watched use my macbook who normally uses a windows laptop tries scrolling pages in Safari by touching the screen.

So have all of these fanboys (and fangirls) criticising the ad for comparing naming the macbook, suggesting they are desperate etc, forgotten the MASSIVE "I'm a Mac" and "I'm a PC" campaign by apple? Apple put so much money into it, here in the UK they hired two well known british actors to remake the ads.

It's a little funny how offended people are by the existence of PC vs Mac commercials given the whole "I'm a Mac" campaign "our" side had.

I don't think people are offended, in some respects folk are disappointed that Microsoft feels they're in so bad a position that they need to punch down. Microsoft has the dominant operating system in the desktop and laptop market but they're building these attack ads which is the move of a weaker competitor or underdog. It's not dissimilar to Intel building an attack campaign on Apple pointing out limitations of Mac's that use Intel chips or having to fake their devices with after the fact renders. That said the Intel ads are rather confusing because it's unclear why they're concerned with Apple when it's AMD that poses a much larger threat to them. In both cases you have to ask why Microsoft and Intel are attacking Apple, a minority player in the desktop and laptop market, if they truly believed their own product was that much better.

The other aspect is that these ads are intentionally misleading, it opens with "Today I'm going to review" but it isn't a review: it's a scripted advertisement. The "I'm a Mac" campaign generally presented a format that generally juxtaposed something common on the PC (viruses, lack of web cam) against the alternative experience on the Mac (less viruses on Mac or built in web cam). They also commonly highlighted comparable experiences (e.g. Office also available on the Mac) or unique functionality to the Mac (iLife). The tone of the ads are perhaps more passive aggressive (e.g. take the WSJ one) rather than outright attack ads with the Mac presented not so much as attacking but informative against a bumbling PC. I think this tonal difference is the other half of where these ads miss the mark.

A blade server doesn’t have a zoom lens. That obviously means an iphone 12 max is better.

Eww... they have INTEL inside Microsoft surface.

M1 Chip.. Don't have to say much more Microsoft. That's alone is a game changer.

Microsoft's Tablet business still exist?

Are they not aware of the M1 iPad Pro? Come on now...

Eww... 32GB of RAM. 😎
Surface uses AMD and the same Intel that Apple has been using for 16 years. 🤣

Anyway, M1 is game changer, probably 3-5 years ahead of Qualcomm. Macs and Surface are extremely enjoyable devices. These ads are not necessary.

I've had a Surface 6, and X, and Laptop...I've used the touchscreen zero times on all three. I had a pen w/ both the 6 and X, and the pen is okay but nothing to write home about. I never used the USB port, and hate the idea that I have to have a special charging cable compatible vs just a USB-C. Everything else is meh, including Windows 10.
All of those can charge using USBC so I guess you didn’t look too much into it before moaning.

In the past, a lot of ad professionals were using mac and were active here and on other forums. By reading the comments now I guess the mac user base has changed completely.
So the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads were all brilliant and all MS ads are misleading, tacky, silly, run by children, suck, bad, pathetic, desparate, vomit, ... ?

Anyone with a basic understanding of marketing would be able to appreciate what microsoft is doing here. I guess such persons are few and far between here.

But hey, let's get Ellen Feiss back on the air to educate the world on the facts we all know. "Surface pro 4 is like bleep bleep crasch and my paper is like gone bummer."
The "Yo mac is on fleek" attitude is killing the platform.

I have first hand experience of how trash the Microsoft Surface is from a QA point of view, but for me on a great many occasions the touchscreen of it has been immensely useful and sped up the task I was doing. I personally would like the choice and would also like MS to sort themselves out and produce a quality product.

Many people on here champion Apple like it is a sports team. The only people we should worry about is us, the consumer, and for us to win competition is essential.

yep, the consumer always knows best.

i never said anything about their decision to remove sd slots, i was talking about bringing these ports back. another very silly comparison, jeez...

yea, everyone has so many usb a things that it'll be a while before this isn't needed... i have a great usb a hub which has both usb a and usb c cables(for connecting to the computer), so that's a great solution, but not so much when on the go.

How many usb a devices do you travel with? everything I put in my travel bag has the appropriate usb c cable with it and stays there from trip to trip. I do carry a usb a to usb c adapter in case someone hands me a thumb drive, but in 3 years I think I have needed it once. at home I do have a usb a hub which I do occasionally plug an old hard drive into for back up purposes.. but I don't travel with those. Not meaning to pick on you, your comment made me think. I travel a LOT for work (or did pre covid) and maybe I just put more thought into my gear than the average Joe. I love having 4 usb c ports for when I am on the go. far more convenience than a legacy port.

Yep, I used one of those in my 2014 MacBook Pro. It was slow. And limited in storage capacity. Can't say I miss it given how fast flash drives are these days.
