AAA games require high-end hardware (especially video cards)
They don’t “require” high-end hardware, do they? If so, they wouldn’t be selling in the numbers they are today. I think they highlight the improvements that can be had with high-end hardware, but they’re playable (with fewer effects) on lower-end hardware as well (like two of the biggest games, Minecraft and GTA).

Well, consider the franchises they are actually getting. Call of Duty, and the rest is mostly Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch which all come to PC anyway. The Bethesda purchase had more value, in Fallout, Doom, the Elder Scrolls, and Starfield.

I rather suspect EA would have beaten Activision Blizzard in franchises, with EA Sports and BioWare, Battlefield, the Sims, etcetera.
As someone else mentioned, King is included. Which, from looking at the prior charts about how much money is made on mobile, is prooooobably a good chunk of the profits the portfolio makes.

Meanwhile Apple makes most $$ in gaming of all of them.

But it’s ”stupid” mobile gaming unfortunately.

Apple doesn’t have any pressure to get or create triple-A games when they can make massive $$ with mobile gaming.

That stupid mobile games is dominating the game market by more than 50%. Both PC and Console can't even compete with mobile gaming at all.

Well kind of normal about every mobile game has loot boxes or other things that you buy, that is were the big money is, and who does not have a smart phone in his pocket can't be said for consoles or PCs.

Personally I don't get the trend with mobile games, most I find boring and controls lacking (yes I know you can connect a controller).

Also I see about 90% or more on mobile not as "real" games (I know I might get some hate for that) and a lot of them feel like pay to win (hence probably why so much money is made in mobile gaming).
And the few good / decent ones that are out there are often PC or Console ports.

As for the topic, I was not expecting much from Blizzard and Activision for Mac in the future and I guess this is the last nail in the coffin for that story.

And what is your point in relation to the topic? What are you trying to prove? That apples and oranges are different?

Has Apple admitted the percentage of App Store revenue that is from mobile gaming?

It’s pretty clear that their entire plan has always been a big price hike and making it streaming only sooner or later while having no options to actually purchase their games. GamePass is just their original always on DRM vision of Xbox One where they would have had complete market control.

Where is that clear anywhere? You know you get a discount from buying a game that is on gamepass. So if a game you like is leaving gamepass, you can purchase it at a 20% discount.

The AAA games that pull in the most money also have loot boxes, DLC, etc. So, mobile or console/PC, the big money is in payments after the initial “sale” (especially if that “sale” is “free to play”).

Well, WoW's been on a steep decline since TBC/WotLK, so maybe this is a good thing?

lol. Yes, they've been in decline since the release of TBC about 13 years ago. They keep releasing expac after expac hoping to maintain their dominate position.

What are your system specs?
I don’t want to derail this post. But consoles are far easier than PCs I just want to play not tweak settings and diagnose for hours. I fixed one of my systems by doing yet another DDU. FF7R still plays horribly though. I have a borrowed 3080 is one system and an AMD 5700XT in another.

Comparing mobile gaming to PC gaming is like comparing Major League Baseball to little league. I can assure you, there are a lot more little league players but that does not make them better.

Way more than Android.

Doesn't really change the fact that Apple is one of the major player in the game industry. This is why many AAA game developers also wish to make mobile games. COD is a great example.

So what? Apple is focusing on what they are good at. Mac is only 10~15% for their total revenue.
Again. What's your point and the relevance in relation to this thread's topic?

Yeah I watched a YT of someone running it on an AMD iGPU, it looked like a potato but averaged ~20fps with FSR set to performance.

He must be playing with integrated graphics. Even on a 6800 that I got for MSRP $579 it averages ~80fps @ 1440p ultra on GoW.

It certainly doesn't seem like Apple are interested in spending loads of money to buy-in game studios - like at how they are relatively slow to invest in TV production which is needed to bolster their TV offering while the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime are spending loads more and snapping up big name titles, IP, and customers.

If they follow the same rationale as they seem to be adopting for gaming, Apple won't be doing anything out of the ordinary in terms of hardware. The closest they will come is maybe using A-series phone CPUs (or non-Pro iPads) as the base platform and they certainly don't have any reason to be following the console pricing model (cheaper over time, sold at a loss as soon as possible).

Without buying in recognisable IP or big name developers that might draw in punters into the Apple Arcade service, they do need to invest in quality games that will get people paying for Apple Arcade or at least giving them less reason to resist buying into the Apple One bundle.

Apple Music is fine, Apple TV+ is improving, but for me there is nothing in Apple Arcade that is creating sufficient buzz for me to check it out. That said, I have a 3 month trial to check it out.

For me, Apple will have to concentrate on titles that can play on newer iPhones or iPad Minis. The A12 in the current 6th gen Apple TV is a reasonable lowest common denominator that devs can work towards.

They just need to find games, perhaps multiplayer ones, that will give people a reason to see Apple Arcade in a more positive light. At a glance the majority of the games on offer in Apple Arcade look like very casual diversions, I do accept that Apple are just effortlessly making loads of money from their in-app purchases elsewhere in the store though.

I don’t think Apple Arcade will EVER be in a positive enough light for someone that doesn’t own an Apple device to a) Buy an Apple device and b) subscribe to Apple Arcade. The ROI for Apple spending money on exclusive games just wouldn’t be there.

In this world where folks like to play with their friends across platforms, I can’t envision an exclusive title (online or non-online) that could be good enough to drive someone to buy Apple hardware JUST to play it. Much less, getting your group of friends that don’t own Apple devices to buy them in order to play multiplayer.

Potentially true, I can't see people buying AppleTV devices or iPhones just to share the latest non branded anonymous games. Call of Duty type IP perhaps. This is why Microsoft have made their very expensive gamble with buying Activision-Blizzard.

If you're playing with friends cross platform it could be something as complex as a Civilisation type game or something as simple as a Scrabble clone.

In this scenario, Apple probably have a logical reason for doing what they are doing. And it's not ever going to involve throwing an M2 CPU into something that competes price-wise with PS5 or Xbox. I doubt an M2 is going to outperform the Xbox Series X on tech specs, it certainly won't on price and Apple aren't getting involved in IP bidding wars.

The solution for AAA gamers, as ever, is to buy the relevant console or a PC if you want to play those titles.

Why Apple need to invest PC/Console games when they are dominating the gaming market from iOS? It's not apple and orange, they are all games. Furthermore, the mobile game's market is way more profitable than PC and Console. If you want PC/Console games, get Windows or PC. macOS wasn't really good for that.

Exactly this. I have a PS5 for those exclusives, even if the game is on Windows but sometimes it performs worse ( looking at you FF7R which was a huge disappointment on PC)

What on earth are you on about?
God of War? Better on PC in every way.
Horizon Zero Dawn? Better on PC in every way.
Days Gone? Better on PC in every way.

You're not even talking about a Sony IP?

Again, Apple isn't a game publisher or developer, so while they are making the most money from mobile games, they are not really dominating them. As a matter of fact, Apple doesn't really have any skin in the game, so to speak, with respects to gaming mobile or otherwise.
