Guess you're one of those that operate on literal meanings, and nuance and hyperbole kinda go over your head. No problem, lol. (It pays to not sleep in English reading courses).

It's worst mainstream OS.... ever. There's 3 mainstream OS's ... Windows, OS X, and Linux. Windows, at version 8, is the worst. Got it? Let me say it again, Windows 8 is the worst OS. I definitely haven't used all OS's, neither have you, and neither has anyone else. So no one knows what is truly the worst ever anyway.

No, I'm just one of those types that hates it when stupid things are said. And yet I have to respond to another one.

Worst at what? Worst at being a desktop OS A mobile OS? Worst for people who use an office suite? Artists? Or are you saying it's the worst at everything? Because it most certainly couldn't be worse than OS X at coding in certain languages. It couldn't be worse than Linux at it either.

Worst in what way?

I have used plenty of Operating Systems that are worse, and I'm not talking about older ones either.

Worst at doing its job... taking user inputs (particularly bad with the touchscreens), processing them, giving the user a result. It doesn't manage memory well. It doesn't manage the IO's well (crashes). It does an OK job most of the time, but it's the worst amongst the mainstream OS's. So for your money, why the hell would you buy anything else but the best? Linux is solid, but harder to use. W8 is neither solid but kinda easier to use. OS X is solid and very easy to use. So yeah.

I disagree. Windows 8 is one of the best. It works on a vast variety of hardware out of the box. It is the fastest and most stable Windows yet. It is the best new release of Windows for application compatibility. And it is more lightweight than Windows 7.

Granted, the UI was a little rough round the edges in 8.0. But 8.1 has improved upon it and I'm sure 8.2 will continue the trend. People who say it is the worst OSs yet has either not used many OSs or have not used Windows 8.x long enough to form a better opinion than other "OMFG THINGZ HAS CHANGED."

OK but why do I want to sit around while MS perfects W8.... when Apple has already honed OS X to a fine instrument? Have some self-respect.... get the most for your money.

Its your choice what you use. I couldn't care less what you choose. I was simply arguing points as to why I think Windows 8 isn't the worst OS in the world. My post was purely academic.

Windows 8 isn't solid? I don't know what you're doing with it, but my experience has had just about as many BSODs as Kernel Panics on OS X and fewer program crashes. I haven't had a problem with inputting via a touch screen either.

Are you trying to use your toes or something?

The two desktops are very confusing and after a month i still can't seem to find anything, i don't know where the apps are in metro and the desktop. (no, i don't look on the internet for it, this should be obvious).
The mail-app is a dragg, i need more clicks than ever to do something, huge text, no visual sign if i read a mail or not and if i click on a picture in a mail i get a totally different interface i can't quit, totally stupid.

Windows 8 should have named Sybil. Tablet OS? Desktop OS? It depends... Either way, it doesn't seem to be the one you want, when you expect it.

Ars has an interesting look at the latest "fixes" you seem so sure about: Windows 8.1 Update 1: More interface concessions that still won’t make people happy | Ars Technica

Well, Ars have said it. I guess that confirms it as true.

Ars are entitled to their opinion as are you. Myself, and many other users I know have had no problems with the changes made in Windows 8 and welcome the dual device OS. I find it highly useful and haven't had much problem adjusting to the changes. I found it highly unlikely that many people would even bother with Windows on this forum anyway.

That kind of says it, the last part. People here don't bother with Windows. It sometimes feels like some people here have an "All Apple, all the time" approach. Even the ones that like something else (usually Android ) seem to have a seething hatred of anything Microsoft for no good reason.

That is exactly the right approach. Apple products and services integrate so seamlessly it makes perfect sense to go all in on the Apple advantage.

It probably stems from having Windows forced on them for years at work and having to live with all the flaws, glitches and blue screens. Windows was always good for Microsoft Certified Pros looking for a job, but bad for those having to use the software in the real world.

That is what you think is the right approach, and it might be for you. There is no single right approach to a software ecosystem, though. Also, yes, it is for the past. That is why I say no good reason.

People are quite reasonably scarred from the past. And the problems of the past haven't gone away with current Windows. But with BYOD in the workplace Windows has gone away for a lot of people. :D Many don't even need a computer anymore. They just carry iPads and iPhones with them on the job and it's goodbye boys in Redmond forever more!

Hopefully it dies.

I don't wish death on them, as I love Office, and still have faith in them (mainly because I use their older OSes). I do wish death on Metro though and if it takes a huge dip in profits for MS to get there then so be it.

Not sure what you seem to be doing with your devices but coming from a Surface Pro and a Desktop with dual touch monitors I haven't had any issues with touch input. It is as smooth as iOS and even better than vanilla android. So far I have had one crash and that was while I was updating my SSD firmware in the OS. To be expected I guess.

Windows 8 is solid and really easy to use.

Maybe people don't want to use OS X, Macs have hardware that is not up to the task or have use cases OS X cannot handle. That is why I use Windows and to me Windows 8 is absolutely perfect for everything I need.

No, it isn't reasonable. The people who ran Microsoft back then don't run it now.

As for the world not needing a computer anymore, it's the same crap I hear from every Post PC disciple. It isn't true, regardless of how many people say it.

People don't care who is running the company now or back then. They care about their experiences with the products over a period of time, and those workplace Windows experiences were generally pretty damn terrible over a long period of time. Microsoft could fire every employee and start again and it will still mean nothing to those who spent a decade fighting problems with Windows while trying to do their jobs. Those experiences are engrained in the memory and will never be forgotten. It's human nature.

Also did I say the world doesn't need computers anymore? I couldn't do my job without one. But for a lot of people, traditional computers are no longer necessary tools of the job.

And yet they will keep buying them. That's why more consumers bought traditional PCs last year than tablets.

As for the average person not caring who runs Microsoft, you're right. They just buy a laptop and use it. Most of them aren't the people who are supposedly replacing their laptops or desktops with tablets.

Oh wow, I almost creased at that. Do you really believe that?

Of course he does, he's gotten it in his head that everything Microsoft does is wrong. If they had made something like iOS before Apple? He'd find a flaw with it. Logic has nothing to do with a ABM-er.

The biggest problem is there really don't seem to be any compelling reasons to upgrade hardware these days, and I bet most of their installations come from new hardware sales.

Of course, this is true of Mac's too... My Mac Book is going to be 6 years old this year, and with minor upgrades to memory and drives, it's still perfectly capable for what I use it for in an office environment.

I know many Mac users may feel they need increased power, for video editing etc, but these type of industries represent a minute fraction of the PC market.

iOS is a more mainstream OS than OSX these days, based upon units sold year on year.

Worse still, at least in the mobile computing area, is the most compelling reason to upgrade is hi-res IPS screens. Unless you're a 20-something with super-perfect vision Windows at native QHD resolution is problematic at best on laptop screens. Windows scaling renders poorly and is non-existent for some third party software.

You could tell he was a bit off when he said Linux was mainstream. Ask almost anybody what Windows is, they'll know. Ask most people what Linux is, you might not get a real answer.

Nope, trying to use a new Lenovo. Work-issued. Sucks ass, especially when trying to use touch with the browser.
