I always found the lack of x86 apps to be a funny argument against Windows RT. I could see it as being an argument in favor of an Atom Tablet, but it is usually used as an argument for either an Android Tablet or iPad. And that's where it gets weird to me.

Why isit funny? No apps means dead platform?

I haven't bought a windows computer since my Sony R505, what, 12 years ago? But then I had a need for a decent computer, with decent controls for my daughter.

I've pondered sub $400 laptops, even hacks. But nothing was hitting home - espicially since I would probably need two.

Then I came across the Dell Venue 8 Pro. Woth a sorta working stylus... For $249. They had my attention.

It is far from perfect, but it has controls that carry across wherever she uses the tablet, it emails me reports even (mind you this is my special needs DD that lacks sound decision making.impulse control). I can run a variety of windows educational programs I have too - bonus.

For $249 it also came with Office Home and Student - since I planned to use OneNote for her this was great. money saved... Or just reducing the cost of the tablet.

I've been a Mac since 1987, I had some years in the Window world because of work (NT 3.51/4 admin, along with VMS). I swore i'd not ever go back to windows, i was done. I love my Mac's. But, the ability to carry around a tablet type of device that can do more is kinda cool. And at a price that fits my single mom budget.

There is potential here Windows needs to fix some issues, Intel needs to too... But they could go far with it.

Oh, and I'm the only person I know that likes Windows 8.1. Now if only I could remember where I found the Mac address... Lol!

Pretty sure those are satirical, worthy of The Onion... however, that pretty much echoes my actual first-day experience with Windows 8. I ended up returning it and buying another Mac. I was truly disappointed because I'd been saying (here, even!) for a year that I really wanted to try a convertible tablet-laptop device.

I may give it another try... the Dell Venue Pro 8 sounds like a great deal.

Those are the same article that was mentioned earlier which I said was a spoof, which led to people mentioning our own experiences installing 8.1

8.1 is a mostly automatic install only requiring a few 'next' clicks. I'm sure if Bill ran into issues he would understand. You think Steve Jobs or Tim Cook would blame OS X if an OS upgrade from the app store failed?

I'm not the one who said it is the WORST OS EVER. I'm not the one arguing this on the basis of ONLY USING WINDOWS. So, kindly, get some facts. It also isn't even the worst current OS. There are a thousand current OS's out there. Windows 8 isn't the worst at everything.

I'm sure I could find a Linux OS that's worse than Windows.
Windows Vista, ME and especially iOS 7 are much bigger fails than Windows 8 and every take on desktop Linux is a shocking mess as of 2014.

I agree.

Instead of fixing their products as quickly as possible, they should hold onto problems. No patches, no matter how severe the vulnerability until patch Tuesday. I'm sure that'd go over for them well.

I did not say not to do it, I said it was a drawback of using the OS. Somehow my Mac does not do the same thing constantly. Maybe if there product was designed a little better in the first place....like say OSX :apple:

Maybe I'm spoiled by using OS X for a while but from reading your post, it makes me cringed. Now I know this is not a lot of hoops when in term of "windows installations" as I know things can get even worse. However when comparing with OS X, this is a lot of hoops that one have to jump through just to have a functional machine. In OS X land, things are pretty straight forward and painless. I usually just install software, let it run, go get a cup of coffee and by the time I got back, everything is ready to go. Backing up, migrating from one machine to another are pretty painless, even preserving user data and apps. To each his own. ;)

I use classic shell which is free. It's funny that so many people will go out and get a start menu replacement which changes everything for W8 putting desktop W8 back to a level of normality. Funny how MS didn't think it important enough to include standard Start as ....... standard!

Any OS is 'painless' once you've learned how to use it. For a Windows user, migrating to OS X can be an astronomical pain in the arse and vise versa. All software requires some amount of learning. OS X is straightforward and painless for you simply because you know how to use it better than Windows. For a Windows user, OS X is far from straightforward and painless.

Unless you're a quick learner and adaptable. Then any platform should work for you fine.

Microsoft will continue to sell software - Business and Pro markets are secure.

Apple's withdrawal from these key markets have guaranteed this.

Did you check the CRC of the ISO? It was probably corrupt - Windows 7/8 have a pretty good, streamlined, installation.

OSX does need some upgrades - like a better finder, and features like iSCSI, etc.
Replying to you and the quote you quoted. I find OS upgrades no matter who and what they are for to be bandwidth and time hogging when downloading and given the size of some of them I kind of expect a bit more at the end than what I actually knew I was going to get given the time it took.

OS X has more vulnerabilities than Windows, so I don't see your point. It has nothing to do with it being made better, it has to do with Apple waiting until they can throw a several hundred MB patch your way.

Chrome OS written all over it

This is MS competing with Chrome OS netbooks/notebooks. It really doesn't belong on this site.

I got super excited when I saw this at first
Then I saw "for manufacturers".
I guess I'll have to save up so I can dual-boot windows.

desperate times for MS ? ... now almost all major OSs are free ( Android/iOS/Chrome/Firefox/etc) , windows aren't dominating anymore.

Yeah. Screw Windows! They're nothing nowadays. Nobody uses it.
Oh... wait...

If you think it is the worst OS ever, you clearly haven't used that many operating systems.

Guess you're one of those that operate on literal meanings, and nuance and hyperbole kinda go over your head. No problem, lol. (It pays to not sleep in English reading courses).

It's worst mainstream OS.... ever. There's 3 mainstream OS's ... Windows, OS X, and Linux. Windows, at version 8, is the worst. Got it? Let me say it again, Windows 8 is the worst OS. I definitely haven't used all OS's, neither have you, and neither has anyone else. So no one knows what is truly the worst ever anyway.

ROTFLMAO! Self-refuting moral certainty. Well played. *golf clap*

I disagree. Windows 8 is one of the best. It works on a vast variety of hardware out of the box. It is the fastest and most stable Windows yet. It is the best new release of Windows for application compatibility. And it is more lightweight than Windows 7.

Granted, the UI was a little rough round the edges in 8.0. But 8.1 has improved upon it and I'm sure 8.2 will continue the trend. People who say it is the worst OSs yet has either not used many OSs or have not used Windows 8.x long enough to form a better opinion than other "OMFG THINGZ HAS CHANGED."

I'm a Mac user and have recently bought a cheap W8 laptop that works great for basic stuff but what a pain in the arce is Windows 8, just crazy.

The two desktops are very confusing and after a month i still can't seem to find anything, i don't know where the apps are in metro and the desktop. (no, i don't look on the internet for it, this should be obvious).
The mail-app is a dragg, i need more clicks than ever to do something, huge text, no visual sign if i read a mail or not and if i click on a picture in a mail i get a totally different interface i can't quit, totally stupid.
