MS trying to employ a "we're special" strategy to showcase a product portfolio that is anything but.

Saying they were following Apple's lead is a little disingenuous.

sloppy tech "journalism" from the fine folks at macrumors. what reason else than to tie apple in somehow so a story can be posted on front page?

I like how Macrumors makes an Apple mention in a way that makes it seem like Microsoft is copying Apple on this non story. Great way to keep those who see Apple as a religion really riled up. I still haven't seen this news on non Apple tech sites, so it's odd to see it here.

Well actually I read this 'news' about 2 weeks ago at a Dutch non-Apple website...

as it was for Apple, i think this will be a good thing for Microsoft.

CES has become much too big for itself these days and its mainly filled with ideas that never see the light of day.

bring products out when they're ready and don't adhere to a stage show like CES. the way information moves now as compared to 15 years ago is amazing. back then it would have been an ideal platform. now? no need.

Huge difference when Apple pulled out of Macworld after 2009 it was as they were on a strong ascend in both mindshare, products and sales. When IBM chose the same approach for Comdex back around 2002, they were changing their business strategy. This is not a good move for Microsoft as they work hard to prove Windows Phone is a legitimate OS and while they face increased competition in their Xbox group from Sony and Apple. Apple doesn't need trade shows. If some unknown remote person at Apple sneezes in a back office at 3 Infinite Loop, it gets publicized. Microsoft needs focus. I've participated in many multi-million dollar Microsoft events and they have all sucked. I've been an Apple fan for quite some time. It amazes me how many people are so proud to confess to me that they just purchased their first Mac. They got an iPhone. They got an iPad. I don't think Microsoft has a chance until Steve Balmer is ousted.

"We'll get a chance to go through this [Apple versus Microsoft debate] again in phones and music players. There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get." Steve Balmer, April 2007

there are lots of other trade shows to showcase their products. E3, MWC and others

ahhh, I've not gone to CES since 2007, went 4 years in a row.
used to be cool/hip stuff there, and MS had a huge presence.

I even got these business cards at a 2005 CES show, discussing with Apple then iPod and integration into Auto OE gear....

So another downsizing of CES??

Has CES "jumped the shark"?

Wait apple owns that strategy? Did they patent that too?

:p

It is for sure they are going to get sued!

I guess some people's Mac computers are allergic to Microsoft. As soon as the word "Microsoft" appears in the screen, the machine replies to the thread automatically. They come with some pre-made macros like "Microsoft sucks", "Microsoft is copying again".

So, people believe it.

When I read the opening line to this article I thought to myself "Oh I bet this thread will be full of parody jokes about Microsoft copying Apple".

Turns out they weren't jokes.

That sucks. The more the better especially for these conventions.
I don't like Microsoft products too much with the exception of a very few accessories, but they always have a kick ass presence at CES. Sorry to see another one go.
Really hope this isn't a trend as it feels like a real life Engadget at these things.
Enjoy these more than when my dad used to take me to the car shows when I was a kid.

It is funny Microsoft copied apple again. Who is next samsung and google?

So is FaceBook (social media) replacing trade shows? Did I blink and miss it?

Microsoft copying Apple strategy. What's new?

Too bad the Redmond copy machines don't realize that Apple and MS have different target audiences.

Wait apple owns that strategy? Did they patent that too?

Apple develops the Apple II... IBM follows with the PC (running MS DOS)

Apple develops the Mac... Microsoft follows with Windows

Apple develops the iPod... Microsoft follows with the Zune

Apple develops the iPhone... Microsoft follows with WP7

Apple develops the iPad... Microsoft follows with Windows 8

Apple leaves MacWorld Expo... Microsoft follows and leaves CES

Any other questions about copying?

So is FaceBook (social media) replacing trade shows? Did I blink and miss it?

Microsoft posts a little "Check out our upcoming <product>!" status update on a Facebook page that has around 1,000,000 people that like it. 10% of those people share that status, and some of their friends read it, and might also share it. Now more people are aware of that product than would have been if the product had been displayed at a techie product show.

Apple develops the Apple II... IBM follows with the PC (running MS DOS)

Hum... this page might make an interesting read for you : http://www.blinkenlights.com/pc.shtml. Wooa, IBM got there in 1975 with the IBM 5100 Portable computer. Not to mention everything before it.

Xerox develops the Alto ... Apple follows with the Mac... Microsoft follows with Windows

Fixed that there for you.

Creative Labs develops the Nomad... Apple follows with the iPod... Microsoft follows with the Zune

Even Apple admits so much in the keynote introducing the iPod...

Microsoft develops Windows Mobile... Apple follows with the iPhone...

Oups, you got that one reversed... Heck, Microsoft weren't even first there...

Tons of people do tablets including Microsoft ... Apple develops the iPad... Microsoft follows with Windows 8

What does Windows 8 have to do with the iPad ? And if you want to claim that, what about Windows XP tablet edition ?

Apple leaves MacWorld Expo... Microsoft follows and leaves CES

Any other questions about copying?

Yes, where did you get all that misinformation ?

Wow, 6 claims of 6 wrong. This must be a record

9 and counting.

Just a word of advice : Get out more if you're going to talk about the general consumer electronics industry. I might suggest sites like the following to get up to date on the going ons outside the Apple sphere :

http://www.engdaget.com
http://www.gizmodo.com
http://www.slashdot.org
http://www.ubergizmo.com/

Because up to now, all the people thinking of the Slate as vaporware strike me as people who don't really read anything but Apple related news...
