In a brief report (subscription required), The Wall Street Journal claims that Microsoft and Verizon are in talks to launch an iPhone rival in early 2010. MarketWatch summarizes the report:
The Microsoft phone, code-named "Pink," is expected to appear by 2010 and would extend the tech giant's Windows Mobile cellphone operating system, according to the Journal.
Similar to Google's Android platform, Microsoft will reportedly work with a third party who will manufacture the device, but Microsoft will play an integral role in design and development.

Verizon has been linked to several rumors regarding the iPhone from mainstream news sources in recent days, first with renewed claims that the iPhone may be making its way onto the carrier's network sometime next year, and earlier today with rumors that Apple and Verizon are developing two new products, an "iPhone lite" and a larger "Media Pad", also slated for release as early as 2010.

The more companies innovating, the better Apple has to make the iPhone. Competition is good, people!

copying hasn't worked before... it won't work in the future.

the key is innovation.

I used windows mobile on a phone once :( (And I mean literally once).

I do agree that competition is a good thing however

Maybe Verizon is spreading this rumor to soften up Apple for the iPhone negotiations.

I don't see this frightening Apple, though. MS has yet to show that they can compete with Apple in the general gadget market.

Anyone remember how Jon Stewart outed Jim Cramer for making up rumors to manipulate the market? That's kind of what I feel is going on now. Someone at Verizon is about to sell a lot of stock, and they want their best bang for the buck...

I suppose this was only to be expected. I confidently predict they will have another Zune on their hands. It may be a very competent product but it won't get near the iPhone's sales.

iPhone for verizon, iPhone lite, moblie pad, come on verizon just stop the BS

Stop the BS, verizon says they've been talking with apple and all but now check this new rumor out... Micro soft and verizon making a deal. (now this is more likely to be seen). Its just funny, hmm what's next verizon and sprint teaming up?

I'm completely lost on this one. Assuming it's a Windows Mobile device, what's the point? There's already tons of third-party manufacturers churning out devices with Windows Mobile. If MS isn't controlling the mfg process and just has design input this isn't really that much different.

Can't get it right

I'm sure they are going to copy most of the iphone features and not innovate. iphone was the first to market and is years ahead of everyone so going to be hard to bring in something new.

I also think developers are getting a bit tired of Microsoft. They've been very slow on the cloud computing front.

I say Apple should call their bluff, and raise.

This seems like a replay of exactly what happened with the ipod. First MS tried to go through playsforsure, when that gagged they went zune and tanked. Against the iPhone they claimed their $99 device with mobile windows was good enough, now that it's tanked they're designing their own device. I can't wait to see it.

LOL, the Microsoft copying windows comment was great.
But yeah, seriously, this is not going to work. Look where the Zune got them.
To do something in this age, it's about innovation. :D

I'm no fan of Microsoft but let's be fair. Microsoft showed great innovation with the GUI-based operating system by making it run on a wider selection of hardware. That was an innovation that Apple famously refused to pursue and, for that, Microsoft rightly gets credit for introducing the world to the GUI. Was that not an innovative move?

The fact is nothing that comes out of microsoft is actually good. Its just the fact that everyone's software is developed for windows and thats what keeps them going. It's sad.

I have a windows Q9c and it runs windows mobile. I must say though, it's the best cell phone I've ever had. The software isn't spectacular but I find it very reliable and really easy to used (blackberries for some reason are not intuitive to me).
