Microsoft needs to "Think Different" in it's approach with any phone. If they can safely navigate the shark-infested patent waters and release something as functional and aesthetically pleasing to hold and operate as the iPhone at a lower price (and with a physical keyboard), they'll be on the right track.

Is that even possible? It seems, to me, that a large part of the elegance of the iPhone stems from the absence of a keyboard. I think adding a physical keyboard could only be done while knowing that you'd be lowering your aesthetic goal.

You're running Apple software on it though, which could be the cause of any crashes.... ;)

Har har, Aiden. :p But he was referring to booting Vista on his "Apple," which once booted, is a regular Windows PC. One could indeed make the argument that a Vista VM is unstable because of OS X, but not when you're using Boot Camp.

at last

Before I say this I'd like to say yes I do support Apple. I myself have an iPhone and a Mac. Now, some of the mentality of you Apple fanboys/girls is absolutely obscene. "I don't want iPhone on Verizon" what does it even matter to you if it is released on Verizon or T-mobile or Sprint, what does it matter? You got ATT you like it, thats great, glad you're happy. By saying this in essence you are saying you wish the iPhone to fail because you wish to limit its customer base to only those who use ATT. I've heard it lots of times from my friends, "I wish I had an iPhone but I am not going to get one because I don't have ATT." Some people don't like ATT just like most people here don't like Microsoft, it's the same thing. Why would you try to force someone to use a service from a company they don't like just to have a product that they do like? That's like if I forced you to use Microsoft Word on Windows (just to use as an example).

Another thing that you seem to believe is that Apple is some jealous human being with the mentality that "If you choose to sell the other guy's thing you can't sell ours." A word out to the people who think that. NEVER START A BUSINESS! You seem to forget with all this talk about innovation and user friendliness and the apple experience, which I do believe all these things are true about Apple, the real truth of the matter is the only thing Apple is REALLY concerned about is making cash. Just like Microsoft. Thats the only thing Apple is really concerned about it making money and increasing their market share. Apple has just figured out that being innovative making their products easy to use having good customer support and throwing the word innovative around earns them MONEY. I can guarentee you if they weren't turning a profit off their innovations they wouldn't do it. That being said, releasing iPhone on Verizon opens the device up to a whole new customer base in where Apple can make more money. So whether Microsoft releases a phone with Verizon or not is irrelevant. Thats bad business to not release your product on a platform just because your competitor is releasing it on the same platform as you are.

I personally want iPhone released on all carriers. Verizon, T-mobile, Sprint, all of them. Why do I want that? Because I think Apple is a great company and I think iPhone is a great product and I want people to share in the joy and happiness that iPhone has brought to me and at the same time I want them to enjoy their service provider as well. You seem to miss the point about what Apple Products are about. They are about enjoyment, and nothing is more enjoyable than when you have a phone you enjoy on a service provider you like. I am not a smug little Apple fanboy that thinks you have to be in some exclusive club to enjoy an Apple product. That train of thought is truly sickening. And that mentality is pure idiocy. That is all.

i thought i'd reach the bottom of this thread without reading some1 with some sense. i've been reading lots interesting rumours from this site for a long time now and the threads to entertainment myself more. i noticed how people here make a 'show' just out of 1 'rumour'. so i decided to join the fun. this post has finally got me to join in. not that its really special, before, i was just too lazy.

Windows systems should have a warning:

WARNING:
This Computer has an Alien operating system,
it will attempt to run any of your programs and tools,
but will quickly bog down, crash repeatedly and piss you off.

You probably want to buy the other computer,
the one that says Mac Pro, 64-bit Xeon workstation on the box.

Fixed that for you. :D :D :D

You are wrong here - he's running Apple software on Vista, specifically the Boot Camp drivers.

If you want to get an idea of the problems with this Apple software on Vista, start here: http://macwindows.com/bootcamp.html

_____________

I looked at the Mac Pro box, and it had a warning:

WARNING: 137% APPLE TAX ON THIS SYSTEM
This Computer uses server components which, along with Apple's
obscene profit margins, more than double the price of the system,
and which are most likely of no value to you.

You probably want to buy the other quad-core computer,
the one that says Core i7 on the box and costs half as much.

What does the price of the Mac Pro have to do with Vista's stability (or lack thereof)? OS X alone is good enough for some people. Not everyone is joined at the hip to the Redmond Malware. ;)

I've heard that this new "Microsoft Phone" is going to feature three physical buttons below the screen.

The first one labeled "Ctrl", the other "Alt" and the last one "Del". :D

I welcome the competition its only better for technology as a whole.

The fan boys in here are disgusting. The reason why there are Apple haters out there is because of the way people act around here. Like it or not Apple is just like Microsoft, a company out to make money. One company does it by selling necessities, the other does it by selling innovation paving way to necessity.

Without Microsoft there would be no Apple, and without Apple computers would be just computers, and our digital lifestyle would be nowhere near where it is today.

I just hate the Microsoft is an evil empire Steve Jobs is a god crew. Get over it.

Well, now I don't mean to single out Vista since Leopard's got its own instability problems. But in comparison to XP (hell, even the Windows 7 betas), Vista, from my experience using it, doesn't compare.

Really? I find it to be the opposite - XP is awful in comparison. Vista may be overly bloated and incapable of running on less than a Dual Core and 2GB of RAM but I can't fault its stability.

Leopard has been fine for me but to be honest so has Vista. My works laptop running XP on the other hand...

You don't like it too bad. :p

Vista is stable. Remarkably so.

For you, maybe. But not for the millions of PC users who downgraded (or tried to) back to XP. The most common complaints I hear from people are 1) their peripherals don't function correctly and 2) they don't like the new UI and find the Aero theme "too busy". Everyone knows the complaints about Vista. What I don't get is the clusterf**k of arrogant people who consider themselves computer experts and look down on other users who are having issues with Vista, dismissing them as stupid and technologically illiterate. "My Vista system is perfect (therefore they all must be) and if you knew anything about how to use a computer, you'd know how to fix it." This is something I hear everyday from the arrogant Windows fanboys I know.

Although Microsoft has always allowed users to downgrade to the previous version of Windows, it's getting a little extreme in this case. Especially considering that Windows XP was released at the end of 2001, nearly a decade ago. That's about a century in "computer years." It's equivalent to Mac OS X sucking so bad that most Mac users today in 2009 prefer to use Mac OS 9.

Well they've tried emulating the iPod and that didn't work out well so I severely doubt this is going to impact the iPhone in any way. But I'm not a mega Apple fanboy - competition will be good for the iPhone but I doubt its going to come from Microsoft.

And given their reluctance to release the Zune outside of the US part of me doubts we'll even see this device in Europe or Asia.

Millions? Perhpas corporate users did - in the same way as they downgraded to NT and 2000 (we were on NT boxes until 2005/6 despite buying XP licences) but I really doubt significant numbers of consumers did or, indeed, wanted to.

Don't get me wrong, MS made some pretty laughable mistakes, but I don't think most people - especially after SP1 really care that much.

The most common complaints I hear from people are 1) their peripherals don't function correctly

Again I don't think that's going to apply to that many people these days unless they're using older hardware.

and 2) they don't like the new UI and find the Aero theme "too busy".

I like it but Classic is there for those who don't.

Everyone knows the complaints about Vista.

True and everyone overexaggerates them.

What I don't get is the clusterf**k of arrogant people who consider themselves computer experts and look down on other users who are having issues with Vista, dismissing them as stupid and technologically illiterate.

Not my intention. All I can say is that for me and everyone I know who uses Vista that we just don't have these issues. Now this wasn't always the case - when it came out the driver support (I'm looking at you nVidia) was terrible.

Oh, you have no idea how many people come in asking for PCs that run XP. Ratio-wise, it's about the same as the amount of Mac customers that actually care about FireWire.

Back onto the ZunePhone, I don't think Microsoft should do it, unless their alienating their PlaysForSure partners wasn't enough them pissing off their OEMs for them.

There really isn't one viable drawback for current customers now if the iPhone were to add on other carriers. Like previous posters have said...that'll just make Apple more focused on getting the very best product out there. There are too many Apple snobs who think they are still in this little niche of cool trendy people and they think that expanding will ruin that for them. On the contrary, more users = better product, more apps, etc.

I do find it interesting thought that all this talk about Microsoft and Verizon is coming up at the same time as the Apple and Verizon talks. Doesn't seem to me they would pull off both. Should be interesting to see how it plays out. Check out this short video here about the latest smartphone news.

"Unclear selling is happening, typically online. The customer will get their netbook sent to their home and they imagine to find something like a Microsoft desktop, but they see a brown Ubuntu version. They are unwilling to learn it and they were expecting to have Windows."

"These customers just don’t want to try something new."

:D Might I add for the record that reading that article made me laugh my f**king ass off. Mark my words, EVERY SINGLE PERSON who bought those netbooks was looking squarely at the cheap price tag rather than the specs. The specs clearly state that it comes with Ubuntu Linux, but again, they weren't looking at the specs. This quote from a Wal-Mart shopper will go down in history:

Customer: Do you have that laptop for $399?
Me: We have several different ones for that price...which brand was it?
Customer: Oh, I dunno...I don't care about the brand, I was just looking at the price!!!

I will always remember this, even when I'm old. I'll be relating this story to my grandchildren someday.

If those people don't care enough to do even a tiny little bit of research and homework before buying, and they end up with a nasty surprise, well, they've got exactly what they deserve.
